Description

' B.-K. ENGEVJK.
MATTRESS TURNER.
APPLICATION mu) MAY 8, 1920.
- Patented June 14, 192 1.
ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BESSIE K. ENGEVIK, OF TACOMA, WASHINGTON.
MATTRESS-TURNER.
Application filed May 8, 1920. Serial No. 379,845.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BESSIE K. ENenvIK, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattress-Turners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in mattress turners, and has for its primary object the provision of a device of the above stated character which may be easily and quickly applied to a mattress so that a person may conveniently turn or move the mattress from one place to another.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a strap provided with a clasp at each end so that said strap may be easily and quickly applied and removed from the mattress and when applied a firm hold may be obtained on said mattress and when removed may be stored or placed in a comparatively small space.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a mattress turner of the above stated character which shall be simple, durable, and efiicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragamentary side elevation of a mattress illustrating my invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, illustrating a mattress turner constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view illustrating one of the clasps;
Fig. 4tis a transverse sectional view illustrating a tension means for the clasp.
Fig. 5 is a plan view illustrating one of the clasps.
Referring in detail to the drawing the numeral 1 indicates a mattress of any well known construction and which has its edges tufted to form the usual side or edge ribs 2. The mattress of the character described is usually very bulky and difficult to handle when carrying the same from one place to another or when turning the same over, and to facilitate the easy and convenient handling of the mattress I have provided a handle 3 consisting of a strap at having secured to each end a clasp 5, both of which are adapted to be applied to one of the ribs 2 at one edge of the mattress so that a person by gripping the strap Al can readily lift or turn the mattress and when desired to handle the mattress with both hands a pair of handles 3 may be applied to the mattress.
The strap at is passed through loops 6 and then has its ends secured together in any well-known manner and said loops are pivotally connected to the hinged ends of the clasps 5 whereby said clasps are pivotally connected to said strap. As each of the clasps are identical in construction reference to one is thought sufiicient for both.
The clasp 5 consists of a pair of comparatively wide jaws 7 that are curved as illustrated at 8 to cooperate with each other in receiving one of the ribs 2 of the mattress, and said curved portions also form gripping edges 9 for said jaws that are adapted to pinch and obtain a firm grip on the mattress. The jaws 7 have formed thereon tapered shanks 10 and 11, and the shank 10 is of a larger size then the shank 11 and is adapted to receive a portion or the end of the shank 11 and a pivot pin 12 extends through said shanks whereby the jaws are pivotally connected and capable of being moved toward and away from each other. A resilient member 13 is bent about the pivot pin 12 and has its ends secured to the inner faces of the shanks adjacent the jaws for the purpose of normally urging the jaws away from each other.
A loop let is hinged to the shank 11 adjacent its respective jaw and receives the shank l0 and has hinged thereto a locking dog 15 that includes a handle 16 and a gripping end 17 The gripping end 17 is disposed at right-angles to the handle 16 and is adapted to engage any of the series of grooves 18 formed in the top face of the shank 10 so that when the handle 15 is swung in the direction of the shank 10 the loop member 1% will draw the jaws in the direction of each other to cause said jaws to firmly grip the rib on a mattress.
The shank 10 extends beyond the shank 11 and is comparatively narrow the same being provided with an opening through which the loop 6 extends for attaching the clasp to the strap.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be noted that I have provided a device which may be easily and conveniently applied to a mattress so that the same can be turned or handled with comparative ease. My invention is especially designed for use in connection with cheap grade mattresses which are very diflicult to handle or manage owing to the fact that they are not equipped with handles and also are or" excessive weight caused by the cheap material from which they are made.
lVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the splrlt and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention what fastening means for causing the jaws to grip a mattress, and a strap secured to the jaws.
3. A mattress turner comprising a pair of comparatively wide jaws and curved to receive the rib of a mattress, tapering shanks formed on said jaws and pivotally connected together, fastening means carried by one of the jaws and adapted to engage the other jaw for causing said jaws to grip the mattress, and a strap hinged to one of the shanks.
i. A mattress turner comprising a pair of curved jaws, tapering shanks formed on said jaws and one of said shanks being longer than the other and adapted to receive the second named shank, a pivoted pin extending through the shanks, a tension member wound about the pivot pin having its ends secured to the shanks adjacent the jaws, a loop member hinged to one of the shanks and receiving the other shank, a fastening element hinged to said loop and adapted to engage the last named shank for moving the jaws into engagement with each other against the influence ofthe tension member, a loop secured to the last named shank, and astra connected to said loop.
In testimony wiereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
