Be it known that I, GEORGE F. ATWooD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex, .State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Winding-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
This invention relates to a winding machine and more particularly to a serving head for spirally applying ribbon or tape to a continuous thread core. The invention will perhaps find its widest application in connection with machines for applying tinsel tape to a core to form an electrical conductor used in telephone switchboard cords and other similar compound electrical conductors.

Specification of Letters Patent.
The object of this invention is to provide I tofore used when operated at high speeds,

The other end of the spring llrests in a groove 13 in the flange 8, and acts as arbrajke to the" movement of the tape 7. Rigidly mounted on the collar -5 90 from the'arms 9 and 10, are the diametrically - opposite arms 14 and 15, to which are pivoted at 16 and 1 7 levers 18 and 19, respectively. These latter mentioned levers are pivotally connected together at one end by a link bar 20, while the opposite ends thereof are equipped with tape guiding means consisting of grooved pulleys 21 and 22, espectively, the lever 18 is connectedwith lhe free end of spring 11 by a link 23, and stops 24 and 25 are provided to limit the outward movement When the serving head is in operation, the tape 7 is passed over the pulley 21 and then to the forward end .of the spindle 1, where it is wrapped aboutthe core 4 which is being fed through the-head at'a definite rate of speed. The. arrangement of the lever 18 is such that when its forward end a is drawn inwardby the tension of the tape passing over thepulley 21, the other end is thrown outward, thereby through the medium of the link 23, decreasing the pressure of the spring brake 11 on the flange 8,

and consequently allowing freer rotation of the spool 6.
The lever 19 and pulley 22 which are duplicates of the lever 18 and the pulley 21 and which are similarly mounted, are provided for the purpose of centrifugally balancing the braking mechanism by counteracting the outward movement of lever 18 caused by centrifugal force when the serving head is being revolved" at high speed. This duplication of lever and pulley allows operation in either direction, if desired. Thus the free ends of both levers being thrown outward by the centrifugal force, no change in the pressure of the spring 11 on the flange 8 results.
Fig. 2 is a modification of the serving head shown in Fig. 1, from which it differs in that a single lever 26 having tape guiding pulleys 27 and 28, is used, which lever is pivoted to the supporting arm 29 at 30, the opposite end being counter-balanced by a weight 31 to compensate for the difference in length of the arms of the lever. It also differs in the arrangement of the brake, which consists of a spring 32 supported from the arm 33 by means of an adjustable collar 34 which may be secured in any desired position by means of a set screw 35. Connection between the lever 26 and the spring 32 is accomplished by means of a small bolt 36 which asses through a slot 37 in the spring 32 an is provided with two nuts for regulating the normal pressure of the brake on the periphery of flange 38 which forms a part of the sleeve on which the spool 6 is mounted. The weight of the lever mechanism carried by arm 29 is counter-balanced by a weight 39 carried by the arm 40 which is spaced substantially 180 from arm 29 on the collar 5, and arm 33 is counter-balanced by arm 41 which is spaced substantially 180 therefrom on the same collar 5. The tape guiding pulley 28 is provided so that the same head can be used for serving in a reverse direction, if desired.
In this arrangement of the brake operating means, centrifugal force is applied equally to each arm of the lever 26 by reason of the proper disposition of counterbalancing weight 31, and therefore no' movement of the lever results, due to this force, to interfere with the operation of the brake caused by the varying tension of the tape when the serving head is in operation.
. WVhat is claimed is:
1. In a serving head, a spool for carrying the serving material, guiding means for the serving material and a braking device for the spool connected to and revolving with the serving head, said braking device being controlled by the guiding means independently of centrifugal'force.
2. In a serving head, a spool for carrying the serving material, a brake for the spool and centrifugally balanced means controlled by the serving material for automatically controlling the brake.
3. In av serving head, spool-carrying means, a spool mounted thereon for carrying the serving material, a spring brake frictionally engagin the spool-carrying means and centrifuga lybalanced means for automatically controlling the pressure between the brake and the spool-carrying means. 1
4. In a serving head, a spool for carrying the serving material, means for retarding the feeding of the serving material from the spool, and centrifugally balanced means responsive to the tension of the serving material for controlling the retarding means.
5. In a serving head, a spool for the serving material, a brake for controlling the spool, means controlled by the passage of the serving material to control the brake, and means for balancing the effect of centrifugal force on the brake controlling means.
6. In a serving-head, a rotatable spindle. a sleeve loosely mounted thereon, a spool mounted on the sleeve for carrying the serving material, a lever mounted on the spindle, a pulley mounted on one end of the lever for guiding the serving material, braking means for the sleeve controlled by the lever in response to the tension of the serving material passin over the pulley, and a second 100 lever pivota ly connected to the first mentioned lever for balancing the effect of centrifugal force.
7. In a serving head, a rotatable spindle,
a sleeve loosely mounted thereon, a spool 105 mounted on the sleeve for the serving material, a lever member mounted on the spindle, means mounted on the lever for guiding the serving material, braking means .connected to the lever and controlled by the tension of the serving material passing through the guiding means, and means for balancing the effect of centrifugal force upon the braking means.
