Description

1. s. CMN-Lx,
DUPLEX ENvELoP.
APPLICATION FILED AUGJI, i919.
Patented June 14,
UNITED s'm'rlasV PATENT OFFICE.
Vshipped in a suitable envelop having attac ed thereto a second envelop. adapted to receive first-class mail, such for lnstance, as the invoice or letter accompanying the goods.
A further object of my invention is to make such an envelop, whlch is so arranged that the entire envelop may be formed from a single blank with a minimum number'of processes.
A further object of my invention is to provide an envelop of the type described, havin fastening devices mounted thereon, where y the goods in the merchandise or catalogue portion of the envelop may be attached to the letter holding portion of the envelop in such a way that even though a portion of the former part ofthe envelop becomes torn then the fastening device will keep-the two parts together.
With these and other objects in View my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts'of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a top or plan view of the blank from which my envelop is made.
Fig. 2 shows a top or plan view of the envelop after it has been folded and the fiaps sealed, so that it is ready to receive merchandise or catalogues and a letter or invoice.
Fig. 3 shows a plan view of the envelop after the envelop has been folded as it would be after the appropriate articles have been placed therein, ;and also "illustrating the manner of holding the merchandise or catL alogue therein from .becoming separated from the envelop.

Specification of Letters Patent. lApplication mea August 1'1, 1919. serial No. 316,896.
Patented June 14, 1921.
Fig. 5 shows an enlarged, detail, sectional view of the fastening device.
Referring to the. accompanying drawings, I have `used the reference numeral A to indicate generally; the blank from which my improved duplex envelop is formed.
The` original blank is substantially rectangular in shape, and is indicated by the dotted linesl 10. The blank in its rectangular form is run through suitable dies or cutting devices, whereby the flaps 11, 12 and 13 are formed and at the same time an arcuate cut 14 may be made at one end of the blank.
The same or different processes may also form creases 15, 16 17 land 18 and the creases 19 and 20'.' v
It will beunderstood that the creases 15 to 18 inclusi-ve are intended-to indicate and 'foutline the folds forming theedges of the envelop, whilev the creases 19 and 20 form the ends of the envelop.
, lVhen the blank has been formed with the aps and creases described, it will be seen that it is divided into four sections, namely B777 0,77 D77 E.
In order to form a catalogue holding enfvelop, the section E is folded on the crease 18 over onto the Section D and the 13 are folded upon the creases 20 to lap over the side edges of the portion 141, 'so that when suitable gum is applied to the under surface of the fiaps y13, they may he sealed against the portion E to form an envelop openat the top.
In this connection, it will be lnoted that the arcuate cut 14 is at the top or receivling end of the envelop, it being formed for holding portions of the envelop, the portion B is folded on the crease 16 over onto the portion C -and the fiaps 12 are turned on the creases 19 over the side edges of the portion B and suitable gum applied to seal the lower surface of the iaps against the upper outer edges of the portlon B.
v The flap 11 is gummed on what would be the upper surface of the blank A in the position shown in Fig. l and it will be seen that when the portion B is folded over the portion 0, then 'the gum vsurface of the flap 11 will be disposedl adjacent to the edge 14 of the portion E I preferably form a sealingl or tying device for my envelop, vwhich may be in the am aiuaaaa in rig. 5. n as am or other flexible device 24 is tied around the eyelet 21, the string being of such length that it may be drawn around the envelop along lines parallel with the transverse and longitudinal axes thereof.
In the portion A, a secondL eyelet 25 is let into the portion in position to substantially register with the eyelet 21 whenv the envelop is folded into position shown in the F igs.'. and 4, and the eyelet 25 carries the spaced washers 26.
In the practical operation of my improved device, the blank is formed as is illustrated by the full lines in F ig. 1 with the creases heretofore mentioned therein, and then the portions B and C and D and E are folded together to form the letter or invoice receiving envelop and the catalogue or merchandise receiving envelop, so that the parts will assume substantially the position shown in Fig. 2.
The flap 11 may then be raised to slip in the letter or invoice into the letter receiving portion of the envelop and the curved end 14 may be raised to permit merchandise or catalogues to be slipped into the appropriate portion of the envelop.
The gum iiap 11 is then moistened and the lap inserted under the curved end of the portion E, and the device is then folded upon the creases 15 and 17'to assume substantially the position shown in Fig. 3.
The finger may be run along the end of the portion l or the device may be grasped after being folded `to the position shown in Fig. 4, and the fingers run alon the outtitl side of theA portionsd and C insure that the gum on the flap 11 has properly sealed against the portion tD.
Suitable reference or indicating characters may be placed upon the portion C adjacent to the crease l? to indicate to the recipient of the enveiop the manner of opening same, which may be accomplished by inserting a knife between the flap 11 and the portion B and cutting across the envelop, which will sever the blank along the creases 15 and 17, thereby separating iirst and second class enveiops and simultaneously opening both. of them, 'so the contents thereof may be oved.
'It wilt be not on i ien the iat-- es it easier voice vcompartment and the merchandise compartment together, comprising the flexible device 24, which may be extended around the envelop along its longitudinal axis and then wound around between the Washers 22'and 23 so that the compartments may be held from movement relative to each other and the merchandise compartment sealed.
It may also be desirable to formthe fiexible device 24, so that it is of sufficient length to extend around the envelops, both along their longitudinal axes and along their transverse axes, in which case the flexible device is also looped around the eyelet 25 on the bottom of the envelop, so that the string will not' slip off `from the corners of the envelop, or otherwise become displaced.
Other forms of fastening devices, which accomplish the same result, may be also used, but it isto be noted that Where the string fastening device is used, then even though the merchandise' compartment becomes torn, the string will prevent the separation of the merchandise from the remaining portion of the envelop.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of my improved device without departing from the real purpose and spirit of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claims any modied forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents, which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the class described, an envelop formed from a single blank by folding the ends of the blank upon the central portions to thereby form independent compartments, sealing aps adapted to close the ends of said compartments and a flap formed at one end of said blank adapted to extend past the line upon which said compartments are folded, when one is swung over to position where it is superimposed upon the other.
2. In a device of the class described, an envelop formed from a single blank by folding the ends of the blank upon the central portions to thereby form independent compartments, sealing naps adapted to close the ends of said compartments and a flap formed at one end of said blank adapted to extend past the line upon which said com partments are folded, when one is swung overto position where it is superimposed upon the other, said iiap having a gununed portion adapted to engage the material of the blank adjacent to its central portion,
whereby when the compartments folded 3i. f;
upon themselves, a cut made aio fg the fold may simultaneousiy open icc-tn compartments.
