Be it known that 1, CHARLES M. Mans, a citizen or the United States, and resident or" Dorchester, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Textile-Machines of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to textile machines, being more particularly concerned with machines for selecting and separating warp threads and presenting them successively to the action of some mechanism, such, for example, as a thread placing device or member. F or purposes of illustration, the invention is herein shown embodied in a warp drawing or thread placing machine where the thread placing device is utilized for placing the warp threads through drop wires, harness eyes and reed dents. lVhilc. my invention has particularly advantageous application for a machine of this class, it is, however, susceptible of broad application to machines intended for other or similar purposes than drawing-in machines wherein the selection and separation of warp or other threads is required.

The machine here shown may, as to certain features thereof, be of the same general construction as the type of machine shown in British Patent No. 4661 of 190% and the United States patent to Charl s Lea, No. 1,153,869, dated September 14, 1915.
In the illustrated form of machine, as is well known to those skilled in the art, the heodles, warp threads and drop wires or other similar loom elements which may be and pre 'erably are employed, are supported in ageneral parallel arra gement lengthwise the machine upon suitable supports carried by the mainframe 1 of the machine. Any suitable thread placing device is provided. 1 have herein represented a drawing needle 2 adapted to be suitably reciprocated and carried by a traveling carriage 3 indicated in Fig. 1 and preferably similar in construction and mode of operation to the corresponding carriage shown in the co-filed application of Edgar F. Hathaway for tentile machines, Serial No. 108,888. The said carriage with its needle is caused to traverse the extent of the reed which is or may be supported in the usual manner and is not herein indicated, as well as the extent of the heddles, likewise omitted. fhe drawing needle is also traversed the extent of the drop wires it the latter be employed, such drop wires being of any suitable construction, not herein necessary to disclose and being similar 1t desired LO those indicated in the co-pending application of Edward La- Chance and Joseph Pennell, Serial No. 877.769, filed December 1?, 191%.
The needle carriage 3 is positively traversed through the machine by means operatively related to the main operating or drive shaft 4, whereby, as more fully hereinafter set forth, the needle carriage and a portion of the support for a plurality, and herein, a pair of warps, are positively and preferably differentially traversed through or longitudinally of the machine by means of op erating connections from the said main drive shaft l. The warp supporting means, or rather a portion thereof, as herein set forth, is traversed through the machine differentially with respect to the 'rayel of the needle carriage 3. The diflferential movements of said parts are movements at different rates. As hereinafter more fully set forth, I provide means preferably but not necessarily hand controlled for effecting a compensating movement of the warps, such compensating Incrementbeing generally de lined as a Increment intended substantially continuously to counteract momentary *ariations. It is not, however, to be understood that sucl. compensating movements must occur continuously, as they may be caused to occur a any suitable time.
In the usual manner, the drawing needle 2 places successive warp threads through the desired heddle eye, selected reed dent, and drop wires, these being approoriately positioned. for the purpose in the needle path by suitable selecting and positioning mechanism. The drawing-in needle 2- may be operated in any suitable manner. in 01'- der to operate the same and the other portions of the mechanism, 1 preferably pro ide means similar to'those shown in the said co-tiled application of Edgar ll. Hathaway. As clearly indicated in Fig. 1, the shaft 4 is provided upon its left hand end with a sprocket gear 5 about which aasses a sprocket chain 6 also passing about a sprocket gear 7 upon a shaft 8 having thereon change gear mechanism diagrammatically indicated at 9 and conveying motion to a short shaft 1G. The shaft 10 is provided with a sprocket gear 11 about which passes a sprocket chain 12 also passing about a sprocket pinion 13 on a shaft 1 f, which as most clearly shown in l and 5, is provided with a cam 15, whereby thr ugh the connections hereinafter described a portion of one of the warp supports, and herein, the lower clamp that receives both sets of warps, receives traverse motion longitudinally of the machine, said motion being differential with respect to the needle carriage and also compensating with respect thereto, if desired, as hereinafter set forth.
The needle carriage 3, hereinbefore referred to as positively traversed through the machine, is preferably provided for that purpose with a divided nut, not herein shown, but similar to that indicated in the said co-pending application of Edgar F. Hathaway, and adapted to engage a suit able thread upon the cam shaft l l which thus constitutes a lead screw shaft for traversing the needle carriage through the machine and cam shaft for effecting the traverse of a portion of the warp supporting means long" idinally of the machine. In addition to the automatic control of the clamp 27 whereby differential traverse of the two sets of warp threads may be secured with respect to toe needle carriage, 1 preferably provide for a compensating movement and herein secure the same by a hand control of the said clamp 27. lv'hilo for this purpose I may provi le any suitable means I have herein represented two lever arms 4:7, one of which is indicated in Fig. 1 as pivotally mounted at it? upon one end upright of the frame, the otuer lever arm being similarly mounted at the other end of the machine. Each of said lever arms 41? has pivotally connected thereto intermediate its ends a link l7 pivotally connected at its upper end at 4:9 to a lever arm 50, itself pivoted at 51 upon the machine. frame, thereby providing parallel motion means to effect and secure the proper movement of said lever arms +17.
The outer free ends of said lever arms 47 are provided with suitable bearings wherein is loosely mounted for manually imparted axial movement a manually rotated shaft 52 having splined thereon a pinion adapted to mesh with the pinion 5 1 fast with a sprocket gear 55 loosely mounted upon a stud or pin 56 itself supported 1n a block 57 adjustably securedby set screw 58 upon an arm or fixed shaft 59 outwardly extending from the adjacent end upright of the machine frame. Passing about and meshing with the said sprocket gear 55 is a sprocket chain 60 which passes about a sprocket gear 61 fast with the worm e3 heretofore de scribed. The pinion 53 is, as stated splined upon the shaft 52 herein formed as a tube, whereby said pinion may remain in mesh with the pinion 54 while permitting longitudinal movement of said shaft 52 preferably manually, whereby to control the clutch mechanism of the machine in a manner similar to that disclosed in the patent to Hathaway & Lea, No. 1,169,087, dated January 18, 1916. In this manner the machine may be stopped or started by the operator wherever he may be positioned between the ends thereof. The said shaft 52 receives a swiveled plug that is preferably bifurcated at its ends for the passage of the upper curved portion of an upright lever operatively connected in a manner not herein necessary more fully to describe with the clutch of the machine. When itis not desired to impart hand adjustment to the warp clamp 27, the shaft 52 may if desired be swung into an elevated or non-active position by a movement of the lever arms l7 upwardly, the latter being then supported in such non-active position by any suitable latch or other means not herein necessary more fully to describe.
The clamp 30 which receives both sets of warp threads 25, 26 is supported at each end of the machine in a generally Ushaped bracket 62 adjustably supported by means of a set screw 63 upon a lever arm 64: pivotally and adjustably supported at 65 upon the framing 1 of the machine whereby through the change of position of said lever arms or, the clamp 30 may be so positioned as to properly tension and. position the warp threads. The warp clamp 30 may be moved longitudinally of the lever arms 6% and if desired compensating hand adjustment of the clamp 30 may be effected by manually moving said clamp in and lon 'itudinally of the two brackets 62. This may be done if desired, to alter the position of the thread end for any purpose.
The pattern mechanism herein referred to for controlling certain specified parts may be and preferably is that disclosed in the co-filed application of lllathaway 8; Mars, Serial No. 108,387, filed July 10, 1916. The comb is indicated generally at 102 (Fig. 9) having teeth 1041 received in bottom and top bars 103, 106, the latter being readily removable. Said comb is held in a clip 91, 92, which is formed in two parts normally grasping the comb through the action of the coil spring 9 1 surrounding the pin 95. As shown in Fig. 7 two such sets of spring clips are employed.
The said comb is supported upon one .cial hen member of the clamp 27 by means of a sprocket chain 88 mounted upon sprocket pinions 85, 87, respectively received upon studs 82, 83, in the said clamp 27. The stud 82 is provided with a hand-wheel 89 for roration thereof, whereby the comb may be moved longitudinally of the clamp. Springs 100 employed to assist in supporting the comb and its clips upon the sprocket chain 88.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 1, the so-called bottom beam is shown at the left as 28, and the top beam or spool is shown ill.- the right as 24. In referring hereafter to right or left, it is assumed that the operator is facing the machine at the warp side of ti e latter. According to one method, the warps may be placed in the machine substantially as follows.

Having thus described one illustrative embodiment of my invention, I desire it to he nnoerstocd that although specific terms employed, they are used in a generic anddescriptive sense and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention beset forth in the following claims.
