T 0. all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARTIN K. H nNoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, county of Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Manufacturing Washers, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of my present invention to devise a portable punch and washer cutter which can be used in conjunction with any. desired or conventional type of power presses such as is now commonly used 1n drop forging plants, for example, hydraulic presses of any description, either of a hydraulic or a steam hydraulic type, or my apparatus can be used with a steam forge or a drop forge. .7 The portable punch'andwasher of my present invention can be readily transferred from one place to another or from one press to another-suitable for the sizes of washers which it is intended to manufacture, and the apparatus can be moved around from shop to shop and used wherever the conditions demand so that it can be used in one shop fora few days or a' weekand then transferred to' another'shop. V
The dies are easily and quickly changed in order to provide for the manufacture of different sizes of washers. p
One of the chief advantages of my in vention is that it can be used in bridge shops, structural metal shops,'railroad repair yards, shipyards and in all places where a number of washers are used but in quantities insufficient to warrant the purchasing of a large and costly machine to be used exvclusively for the manufacturing of washers and which must be made permanent and is ofsuch size that it must be kept in the place in'which itis first installed.
A machine constructed in accordance with my invention can be constructed at an eX- pense of a few hundred dollars.
With the above in View my invention in its broad and generic .scope comprehends a no el method of forming washers and a novel construction of a portable punch and washer cutter in which the washer is formed by a single operation from the stock or sheet material 'of any desired thickness.
Other novel features of construction and advantage will hereinafter more clearly ap-' pear in the detailed description of my in- VGIltIOIL Q For the purpose of illustrating my invent1on, I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same will be found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

The spring columns 5 at their upper ends are of reduced diameter and threaded in order to receive the nuts 12 which latter are provided at their periphery with a desired number of verticallydisposed slots 13. nuts 12 is retained in its adjusted position by means of: a key 1% which extends into one of the slots 13 within the bore 9 and at its upper end. it is laterally deflected and terminates in a downward extension which receives bolt 15 which is in threaded engagement with the head plate 8 in order to retainthe key 14 in position.

A key 21 extends into a slot 19 in a nut 18 and prevents the nut from rotating in order to secure it in its adjusted position, and
7 it will be apparent that if desired the nuts 18 can also serve as stops to limit the downward movement of the head plate 8 as will be apparent from Fig. 3 of the drawings.

The head plate 8 has an aperture 26 therethrough which at its upper end is of enlarged diameter as indicated at 27 in order to receive the enlarged head 28 of a head collar 29 which is locked in position by means of a tongue and groove connection 30 with the head 31 which latter is made in two sections and secured together by means of fastening devices 32, such as for example bolts and nuts, see Figs. 3 and a.
It will be understood from Fig. 4. that by such construction the head collar has a tongue fitting into a groove in the head, and the head has a tongue fitting into a groove in the head collar.
33 designates the die which is provided with an outwardly extending flange 31 to seat in slots 35 in the head 31, the die being preferably of circular formation. 36 designates fastenin devices passing lateralh through the lower portion of the head section to secure the die 33 in position. The head collar 29 is provided with an aperture 37 through it which is of enlarged diameter as at 38 in order to receive the head of the upper punch 39. The upper punch 39 is of reduced diameter as at 10 thereby forming a shoulder 1-1. The lower end of the upper punch 39 is still further reduced in diameter as at 42. The upper stripper head 23 is recessed as at 1:3 in order to surroundand overlap the upper end of the stripper The upper stripper head 23 is provided with a slot 45. see more particularly Fig. 5. which registers with a slot 16 in the lower stripper 44. and in this slot is placed a key at which is held in place by means of a set screw 18, it being understood from Fig. 5 that a slot and a key is provided at opposite sides of the upper stripper head.
The fastening devices 36 carry Ibolts 19 which pass through the liners50 and the lower stripper 51 and are provided with nuts 52 which latter are retained in position by means of lock washers 53 of any desired type. The lower stripper 51 is slidably mounted on the lower punch 54 which latter is apertured as at 55. The lower punch 5 1 is of differential diameter at its lower end. and is seated in the base plate 4 and secured in position therein by means of a bolt 56, see

My novel apparatus can be readily changed to produce washers of different sizes as will be understood by reference to Fig. 13 to, which attention is now directed, and since certain of the parts are the 'same as those already described, have'identified such parts by the same referencev characters as used in the other figures of the drawings.

The operation of my novel construction of portable punch and washer cutter will now be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains and is as followszreference being nowdirected more particularly to Figs. 7 to 11 inclusive of the drawings.
When the parts are in the position seen in Fig. 7, the upper punch and its adjuncts are shown at the top of their stroke and the stock and the parts are in the position for setting up the machine to out the size of washers desired by changing the punches, die, strippers, and nuts and proper thickness of liners to give the required travel and clearance. v y
In theposition seen in Fig. 7 the head 31 carrying the upper punch 39 and the die 33 is at the top of the stroke and'jagainst the stop nuts 12 on the spring columns 5. V The lower stripper 51 also carried'by the head .31
is shown as havingits top flush with the top of the lower punch 54. The upper stripper head 23 and the upper stripper 44 is also at the top of the stroke, the upper stripper head contacting with the stop nuts 18 on the stripper posts 16.
Assuming now that the portable punch has been placed in a press of any desired or conventional construction, the stock is inserted as seen in Fig. 7 and the press is started. As the upper head plate 8 and the upper punch 39 move downwardly the upper stripper 44 and the die 33 as well as the 7 lower stripper 51 move downwardly into the position seen in Fig. 8. On the continued downward movement of such parts they assume the position seen in Fig. 9 at which time the punching operation is completed and the washer 61 has been formed from the stock 60, it being understood that such downward movement of the parts causes the compression of the springs 11.
In this position seen in Fig. 9, the upper punch 39 and the die 33 have cut through the stock 60 which is forced over the outside of the lower punch 54 and below the top of such lower punch. 61 is apparently resting on the lower punch 54 and held down only by the weight of the upper stripper head and the upper stripper 31 but it is actually wedged tightly between the upper punch 39 and the die 33 and considerable force is required to strip it from the punch 39 and the die 33. The blank 62 is forced down inside the lower punch 54 and will eventually drop or be forced out of the enlarged clearance hole in the lower punch. In this position the springs are compressed almost solid in order to store up energy sufiicient to actuate the upper stroke of the machine and do the stripping;
In Fig. 10, the parts are shown in the position which they assume on the upward stroke and about to start stripping. On the upward stroke the upper stripper 44 which rests against the washer carr es up the upper stripper head until it strikes the stop nuts 18 and its movement and that of the washer is arrested. The head 31 carrying the upper punch 39 and the die continues to move upwardly by force of the springs 11 until they are clear of the washer 61 which frees the washer, and the latter drops upon the stock actually or nearly over the hole left in it by the stock. At the same time, the lower stripper 51 carried upward bythe head 31 moves the stock off of the lower punch. The upper stroke continues until the head 31 through its head plate 8 is arrested by the stop nuts 12.

The spring columns 5 act as guide bars for centering the upper and lower punches and the die, and their mating is further insured by having the diameter or" the hole in the lower stripper 51 larger than the outside diameter of the lower punch 54. The capacity of the springs 11. is such as to take care of the largest size washers and for smaller washers the capacity of the springs can be reduced by removing two diagonally opposite springs. F or punching the smaller sized washers modified forms oi? punches and holders with fillers orliners are employed in order to reduce the amount oi high grade steel employed in the cutting members.
7 Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1 1. A portable apparatus for making wash ers and adapted to be placed in a press, comprising a fixed punch, a movable punch, a head in which said movable punch is mounted, die carried by said head, an upper and a lower stripper carried by said head, and means to etlect the relative movement between said fixed punch and the movable punch and die.
2. An apparatus for making washers, comprising a fixed punch, a movable punch, a head by which said movable punch is carried, a die carried by said head, an upper and a lower stripper carried by said head, means to move said movable punch and die toward said fixed punch, and means to move said movable punch and die away from said fixed punch.
3. A portable apparatus for making "ushers, comprising a fixed punch, a movable punch, a head by whichsaid movable punch is carried, a die carried by said head, an upper and a lower stripper carried by said head, means to move said movable punch and die toward said fixed punch, and resilient meansto move said movable punch and die away from said fixed punch.

A portable apparatus for making washers, comprising a fixed punch, a movable punch, a head in. which said movable punch is mounted, a die carried by said head, an upper and a lower stripper carried by said head, means to effect relative movement .between said fixed punch and the movable punch and die, and means to limit the upward movement oi said movable punch and die.

punch and die, means to limit the upward movement of said movable punch and die, and means to limit the upward movement of said strlppers.

comprising a base plate, columns carried by said base plate, a head plate guided on said columns, nuts adjustable on said columns to limit movement of said head plate in one direction, an upper punch mounted in said head plate,ahead connected with said head plate, a die and anupper and a lower stripper carried by said head plate, a fixed punch, and means to effect relative movement between said head plate, upper punch, die and strippers and the fixed punch.

An apparatus for making washers, comprising a base plate, columns carried by said base plate, a head plate guided on said columns, nuts adjustable on said columns to limit movement of said head plate in one direction, an upper punch mounted in said head plate, a head connected with said head plate, a die and an upper and a lower stripper carried by said head plate, a fixed punch carried by said base plate, and means to effect relative movement between said head plate, upper punch, die and strippers and the fixed punch; V
9.9m apparatus for making washers, comprising a head, a movable punch movable in unison with said head,-a die fixed to said head, an upper stripper movable upwardly with said head but adapted to fall by gravity and positioned between said punch and die, a lower fixed'punch, a lower stripper connected to said head, and means to effect relative movement between said head and said fixed punch.

An apparatus for making washers, comprising a head, a movable punch movable in unison with said head, a die fixed to said head, an upper stripper movable upwardly with said head but adapted to fall by grave ity and positioned between said punch and die, a lower fixed punch, a lower stripper connected to said head, means to move said head toward'said fixed punch, and springs compressed by the movement of said head to effect the movement of said head away from said punch.

An apparatus for making washers, comprising a head, a movable punch movable in unison with said head, a die fixed to said head, an upper stripper movable upwardly with said head but adapted to fall by gravity and positioned between sa-id'punch and die, a lower fixed punch, a lower stripper connected to said head, means to move said head toward said fixed punch, springs compressed by the movement of said head to eflect the movement of said head away from said punch, and means to arrest the upward movement of said upper stripper during the.
upward movement of said head.
12.1 111 apparatus for making washers, comprising a base plate, a head guided with respect thereto, a punch carried by said head, a die carried by said head, a stripper head movable'in said head, a stripper connected to said stripper head, a second stripper carried by said head, a punch mounted in said base plate, means to move said first punch and die toward said second punch, and resilient means to move said first punch and die away from said second punch.

An apparatus ;for making washers, comprising a base, a head movable with respect thereto, a movable punch fixed to said head, a die carried by said. head, a stripper head within said head, an upper stripper keyed to said stripper head and adapted to move downwardly by gravity and to be raised by said first head, and means to efiect the relative movement of said head and ase.

An apparatus for making washers, comprising a base, spring columns rising therefrom, a head plate guided on said columns, nuts adjustably carried by said columns to limit the upward movement of said head plate, a movable punch supported by said head plate, a head connectedwith said head plate, a die carried by said head, a stripper movably 'mounted in said head, a lower stripper connected with said head, liners between said lower stripper and said head, a lower punch carried by said base, and means to effect relative movement betweensaid head plate and said base.

An apparatus for making washers, comprising .a base, spring columns rising therefrom, ahead plate guided on said col umns, nuts adjustably carried by said columns to limit the upward movement of said head plate, a movable punch supported by said head plate, a head connected w1th said head plate, a die carried by said head, a-
liners between said lower stripper and said head, a lower punch carried by said base and means to effect relative movement between said head plate and said base.

An apparatus for making washers, comprising a base, a head plate, a head collar in said head plate, a punch carried by said head collar, a die, a sectional head, means to secure said sections together to lock said head plate and head collar together and to secure said die to said head sections, an upper stripper moving downwardly by gravity and adapted to be raised by said head, a lower stripper connected with and spaced from said head, a lower punch, and means to effect relative movement between said head plate and said base.

An apparatus for making washers, comprising a base, columns rising therefrom and having their upper ends threaded, nuts having radial slots engaging said threaded end. a head plate guided by said nut, keys carried by said head plate to engage the slots said nut to retain them in their adjusted position, said nuts limiting the upward movement of said head plate, springs between said head plate and base, a movable punch and die operatively connected with said head plate, a fixed punch on said base, article stripping devices, and means to effect relative movement between said head plate and base.

An apparatus for making washers, comprising a base, a lower punch thereon, a head plate, a punch holder operatively connected with it, a punch ca fried by said punch holder, an upper stripping member moved upwardly by the upward movement of said v said head plate and movable downwardly by gravity.a die operatively connected with said head plate, a lower stripper movable in unison with said die, and means to effect relative movement between said head plate and base.

An apparatus for making washers, comprising a base, a lower punch thereon, a head plate, a punch holder operatively connected with it, a punch carried by said punch holder, a punch block in said punch holder above said punch, an upper stripping member moved upwardly by the upward movement of said head plate and movable downwardly by gravity, a die operatively connected with said head plate, a lower stripper movable in unison with said die, and
means to effect relative movement between 120' said head plate and base.
