CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patgntgd J ne 7 lggj Application fiIed March 3, 1919. Serial No. 280,397.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LILLIE CATHEPINE Dnurox, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fort lVayne, in thecounty of Allen and State of Indiana, have made certain new and useful Improvements in (labinets, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates generally to ironing cabinets and is more particularly a. combination cabinet, including an ironing table, pressing board, and clothes rack, my object in the provision of this cabinet being to place all of the needed assistance inironing immediately at hand so as to minimize the effort expended in the ironing operation and eliminate all waste energy by the saving of steps so as to place the household in respect to these features on a higher plane of efficiency than now exists.
A. further object of my invention is the provision of a cabinet of this character which in the folded position of the parts with the cabinet closed, presents the appearance of and constitutes a practical work table for the kitchen.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating my present invention Figure 1 is av perspective view of my improved cabinet closed;
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section in the same position;
Fig. 3 is an end view;
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section.
Referring now to these figures, my invention proposes a cabinet, the body of which is indicated at 10 and, as seen particularly in Fig. 1, is preferably rectangular and supported upon lugs 11, so as to hold the body 10 well above the floor and permit of ready cleaning beneath the body 10 so as to preserve sanitary conditions at all times.
The front wall 12 of the body 10 may have openings for the reception of drawers 13, the outer portions of which may be simply doors to lower compartments within the body 10, as best seen in Fig. 2, for the erection of supporting shelves and the like, instead of the drawers 13. Either of these features serve the same purpose, however, in
be raised and in this way expose a table top 17 secured within the body immediately below the cover 15, and which should be suitably padded for use in ironing flat pieces, its square edges facilitating accurate foldm and ironing of such pieces.
T-Iinged to the rear stationary strip 14 is one end of a supporting upright 18, which in the closed position. of the cabinet, may be dropped rearwardly upon its hinge along the rear wall 19 of the body as seen in Figs. 3 and 4, this upright being elevated and secured to the upper surface of the strip 14 by virtue of the engagement of its hook 20 with an eye 21 of said strip, in order to form an upright support as in Fig. 1 for the cover 15 when the latter is raised to the open position, so as to expose the ironing table 17 for use as just described.
In addition to these features, the cabinet may include an ironing board 24 slidable into and out of the cabinet upon guides 25 seen in F 4, which support the said ironing board 24 horizontally and immediately below the table top 17. This ironing board has a lower recess 26 adjacent its free end, which provides for readily grasping the same and sliding it outwardly upon the guides 25 previously mentioned from the housed position shown in Fig. 2.
The cabinet may also have an opening normally closed by a strip 34 having a small handle 35, and to which strip is connected the outer end of a clothes rack 37 in guides 38 within the body 10.
It is thus obvious that my invention provides a convenient economical device, capable of use under ordinary circumstances ust as the ordinary kitchen table or cabinet, and which may be readily opened for ironing purposes whenever needed so as to expose the rectangular ironing table 17, and for bringing into operative position the ironing board 24, or rack 36 and one in which the cover when raised is supported by simple effective means adapted to be readily shifted to a concealed position when the cover is lowered so that a practically unbroken table top is then presented.
I claim 1. A cabinet of the character described having a top wall including a rear stationary strip and a cover hinged to the said strip, an upright supporting member hinged to the said stationary strip to fold clownwardly upon the rear wall of the cabinet,
and connections for detachably holding the said upright in vertical position to form a support for the cover when the latter is raised.
2. A cabinet of the character described having its top provided with a rear stationary strip, a cover hinged along its rear edge to said strip, an upright supporting member also hinged to the said stationary strip intermediate the ends of the latter and arranged to fold downwardly upon the rear walls of the cabinet, and a hook and eye connection between the strip and the said upright to hold the latter in inoperative position whereby to form a support for the hinged cover when the latter is raised.
