FLOYD G. WITHROW, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
SPARK AND THROTTLE ROD TENSION APPLIANCE.
essence.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I,- FLOYD G. Wrrrmow, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark and Throttle Rod Tension Appliances; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thecsame.
This invention relates to a device adapted to be associated with and connected to the throttle and spark control rods on motor vehicles, particularly Ford motor vehicles, and keep the same from rattling and vibration, and at the same time hold the rods against accidental movement from any position to which they have been moved. t is a primary object and purpose of the invention to provide a very simple device of this character, made from a single length of wire and one which ma be practically instantly connected and positioned in operative relation with said rods.
For an understanding of the invention,
reference may be had to the following departs in the different views of the drawing. The steering post 1 has throttle and spark control rods 2 paralleling the same and positioned one at each side of the post'in motor vehicles of the Ford type, said rods being located closely adjacent the post.- In the construction'of the device of my invention, a single len h of wire is used and bent and formed wit a middle section 3 of short length, fromthe ends of which the Wires are bent downwardly in parallelrelation to each other and at right angles to the length of said section 3, being formed into hooks 4 of a size to receive one of the rods 2. The wires are extended and coiled into comparatively large coils 5 adapted to bear against the post 1 and thence extended as horizontal Specification of Letters Patent.

sections 6 of a length to reach across the post and over the other red 2, where each wire is formed into a single smaller coil 7 y and finally terminates in a hook 8 open at its upper side and positioned directly under said coil 7.
In attaching the device, the loop made by the middle section 3 and the hooks 4 is connected with a rod 2, the coils 5jbearing against post 1 and sections 6 passing across the post so as to bring hooks 8 in position to receive and pass around the other rod 2. The tendency is for the sections 6, and coils 7 and hooks 8 associated therewith to spring outwardly, thereby bringing the hooks into secure engagement with the rods and holding the same from vibration or rattling under road shocks. In practice it is desirable to use two ofthe devices connected with the rods but reverse the position of the second one from that shown in Fig.- 1, this giving substantial uniformity of spring force on the two rods. P
It is evident that the construction described may be very readily manufactured at low cost, each device being made from a single length of wire easily formed to the desired shape. The attachment may be made almost instantly. The throttle and spark rods are held against not only vibration and rattling but cannot accidentally turn about their longitudinal axes as frequently occurs when the sectors over which the throttle and spark levers attached at the upper ends of the rods move become worn. The devices of the invention have had wide practical test and use. the invention and I consider myself entitled to all modifications in structure com-- prehended in the claims though differing specifically from the exact disclosure made.
I claim:
single coi and thence extended downwardly and fofind into a hook open at its uppen side, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In combination, a steering post, spark and throttle rods paralleling the post, one
The claims define at each side thereof, and spring means bearing against the post and connected to each rod serving to hold the rods from rattling, vibration and accidental movement, substantially as described.
3. In combination a steering post, spark and throttle rods paralleling the post, one at each side thereof, a wire device disposed between the rods and detachably connected to each rod and passing over the post, said device being formed with spring coils inmemes termediate its ends, and said coils bearing against the post, substantially as described. 4. In combinatlon, a steering post, spark and throttle rods paralleling the post, one
at each side thereof, and a single wire spring means detachably connected at its ends to the rods and passing across and bearing against the post, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
FLOYD e. WiTHnoW.
