Be it known that I, LoUisRoUANirr, citizen of the Republicv of France, residing at 42 Rue Franklin, Ivry-Port, Seine, in the Republic or" F rance, have invented new and useful Improvements lin Apparatus for Setting Gages, of which theufollowing is a speciicatio rlhis invention relates to an apparatus especially designed in order to allow ofadjust-ing the dimensions of space gages ofthe' kind. described in my co-pending application for Letters Patent Serial No. 209,331 led on December 28, 1917, of which the present application is a division; This ap para-tus is constructed4 for making adjustment of a whole series of gages with regularly varying dimensions for instance fromwv centimeter to centimeter and to this end itis made'up of two. `sliding pieces which take A a longitudinal v'movement upon a common base. lOne oi these pieces can move alongv the length of the base or. table and can' be iXed on the latter by a suitable'device and in any one of therpositions which are laidv outv inaccordance with .the dimensions of the gages belonging to the series'in question; while the other sliding piece is movable in a less degreel and can only be displacedby the Aaction oa micrometer device and this with-f in the limits corresponding to the dillerence in dimension,between any oneuof the two gages which follow eachother in the series, .He.; the said sliding pieceis not displaced' more than one centimeter, in the above 'eX- ample.. Each of these., sliding pieces is' bored toreceive a cylindrical plug, containj ing an eccentric hole Whose diameter corresponds to that of the rods which are used for the gage, and each of these holes isdesigned to receive one of the said gage rods when performing the operation of adjustment. The holes in the plugs are so disposed as to allow of adjusting the initial distance j parallel to the aXis of the table paratus.

As described in my companion application above referred to, the rods a, Z) are eccentrically mounted in the gage c and may be clamped in any desired angular position byy means of the nuts d; The distance between the cylindrical ends of the rods a, I), may thus be adjusted as desired, within a predetermined range for instance 10 millimeters whereby a gage ofany desired dimension may be obtained within the predetermined limits.
The central rod of the micrometer is attached by the pin 12 to the sliding piece 3, and slides within a bearing 13 mounted in fixed position on the end plate 14 which is attached to the table 1 for instance by means of a bolt 14a. The bearing 13 is mounted soV `end of the rod 10. Any looseness in the mounting is prevented by a small nut 2O screwed upon the slit end of the thimble 18. Upon the thimble 18 is screwed the milled cap 21 used to operate the micrometer, and into the interior of the thimble is driven a small ring 22 which should come` against the part 17 before tightening up the nuts d of the gage 0.
rThe holes 5 in the table 1 are spaced on a system o f units, for instance with spacing of one centimeter apart, and the different gages to be adjusted are of corresponding dimensions. rThe pin 4 is disposed so as to fix the sliding piece 2 upon the table 1 for the adjustment of the smallest gage; supposing this gage to be of' 2O millimeters size, if it is to be adjusted for Verification work upon cylinders of 25 millimeters, this is carried out by turning the milled cap 21 sonas to bring the Zero of the scale on thimble 18 opposite the mark 5 of the scale on the tubular piece 16. rlhe distance from axis to axis between the holes 7 is thus 25 mm. and by inserting the kcylindrical ends of the rods a, b of the gage into said holes and clamping-the rods a. Z) by means of the nuts d, a 25 mm. gage will be obtained.
lf, for instance, a 31 mm. gage is desired, the gage of the next upper size, ranging from 30 to 40 mm. will be taken and adjusted in the same manner as above described, the sliding piece 2 being set by placing the pin 4 in the neXt hole of the series 5. lt is readily understood that the micrometer should be adapted to separate the two sliding pieces by a dista-nce at least equal to the difference between two succeeding gage values. The same method is employed for all other gage values and for all intermediate dimensions lying between them.
Having now described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An apparatus for adjusting the dimensions of. space gages comprising in combination a table or base, two sliding pieces movable upon said table each of them having a hole, a plug provided with a hole eccentric to its axis and mounted in each of said holes in the sliding pieces, the said holes of the two plugs being adapted to receive the ends of the contact rods of the space gage, means for holding one of said sliding pieces in a fixed position on the table, and a micrometer screw mounted on the table and adapted to displace the other sliding piece along said table, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2.k An apparatus for adjusting the dimensions of space gages comprising in combination a table or base provided with holes separated one from each other equal distances, a sliding piece movable upon said table and having a hole adapted to receive a plug and other holes adapted to register with the holes of the table, a second sliding piece movable upon said table and provided with a hole, a plug provided with a hole eccentric to its axis and mounted in each of the corresponding holes of the sliding pieces, the said eccentric holes in the plugs being adapted to receive the contact rods of a space gage, a pin adapted to be passed through one of the holes of the first sliding piece and introduced at the same time in one of the holes of the table for holding said sliding piece into a fixed position, and a micrometer screw mounted on the tableand adapted to displace the other sliding piece valong said table, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
