Description

H. P. MAUGHLIN.

PATTERN LETTER AND NUMERAL.
manner.
Application filed October 20, 1917.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY P. MAUGHLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Pattern Letter and Numeral, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pattern letters and numerals of the type used by attaching to wooden or similar patterns for purposes for identification both of the pattern and of the casting which is made from it, as of course, the pattern letters or numerals forming raised characters on the surface of the pattern to which they are applied, produce corresponding characters on the casting.
The usual method of attaching these letters and numerals is by nailing, but as they are usually made of metal a small nail or brad cannot be readily driven through them until the driving be facilitated by the drilling of holes through the body of the letter. Cementing is sometimes employed but this is liable not to attach them permanently. Neither of these methods provides a convenient integral means whereby the letters and numerals can be arranged as to alinement, proper spacing and general design on a curved or spherical as well as a flat surface in a manner to allow of alteration before being fixed solidly in position.
One of the objects of this invention, therefore, is to provide a means whereby pattern letters or numerals can be tentatively affixed in position while determining their proper arrangement, alinement, spacing, etc., on either flat or curved surfaces of patterns after which they may be permanently and easily secured in the desired position.
Another object is to provide a pattern letter of integral or one-piece construction, having the body portion thereof provided with the bevels necessary for the proper draft and having the points thereof cast integral with the body portion.
A very important characteristic of my invention is illustrated by the drawings, wherein it will. appear that the points on the under surfaces of the letters are of such number, such position upon the letters and of such length with relation to the area of the letters that they will support the letters in upper position and in position for perfect alinement merely by resting the points upon the surfaces on which the letters are to be Specification of Letters Patent.

applied. Preferably, the points on each lotter are of equal length but the points on one letter may be of a different length from the points on another, depending upon the area ofthe letter and the possible spacing of the points.
The manner of attaining this object is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts and in which Figures 1 and 2 are views in perspective of the under side of one of my improved pattern letters and numerals respectively,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the manner of applying my letters and numerals to a pattern, one character being shown as permanently attached, and
Fig. 4 is a similar view except that it illustrates a letter being applied to a curved surface.
In these several views. I have designated the body of the pattern letters and numerals by the reference numeral 1. On the under side of the body 1 is cast a plurality of pointed projections 2, shown particularly clear in Figs. 1 and 2. As these projections are designed to be driven into the pattern they are so placed on the under side of the letter or numeral that they hold all parts of the character firmly in contact with the surface of the pattern. When attaching a number of characters at a time they may be made to assume their proper relative position by any suitable means, slightly pressing the pointed projections into the pattern with the fingers, after which a blow of a hammer on the face of the letter will firmly seat one or more at a time without dislodging the rest. This operation is illustrated in Fig. 3, in which the characters designated 3 have been assembled and the projections slightly pressed in, while that shown at 4 is seated in lace.
It will be obvious that I have provided a novel type of pattern letter in that it may be placed in position for alinement with other letters merely by resting the letters upon their points or by slightly pressing the pointed portions into the pattern with the fingers. It will be further apparent from the drawings that the points on the pattern letters are of such length with relation to the size or area of the body portions of such letters and are so placed thereon that the letters will not be top heavy.
It is important to note that all of th pattern letters have full bevels on all edges in order that the pattern may be properly drawn from the sand. Stating it another Way, the body portion of any letter has all its edges beveled from base to crown to form the face of the letters or numerals. This pattern but it is necessary even though these letters are to be mounted on a horizontal surface. In the trade this is spoken of as draft and the letters are so designed that they Will have the proper draft under all Working conditions. i
From the foregoing it will be apparent that I have provided a type of pattern letter meansof greatly facilitating their arrangement as regards alinement, etc, and of considerably lessening the labor of their at tachment thus effecting a neater job at'less 7 cost than other previous methods. 15 partlcularly important When the letters must be mounted on lnclined planes of the Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
Pattern letters comprising body portions, and at least three points on the under surfaces of said body portions, said pointsbeing of such length and soy spaced that the letters will stand up Without tipping before being forced into the pattern.-
