To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known eher i, SAMUEL Tziorms IALnUP, a citizen or" the United States oi America, residingy et 875 Viest 180th street, city of New York, borough oi' iveninit'izan, n.
Biete of New York5 have invented new useful Improvements in CarLDooi-s, of which the foliowing is e speeiieetien.
This invention relates to u eonrol system for passenger oar doors, having more pertienler reference to an eieetrieelleontrol systern, and being: intended more parieularly for application to city transit trains suoli es subway ory elevated trains.
The invention has for u general. object provide en improved and simplified Control system whereby ehe doors of pl wility of cnrs may be operated in unison, l ing the number of guards required. on enen min.
More speoieelly speaking die in'ven"".on has for an object to provide e cont-rol sysi whereby the platform men el: swr' may operate the doors, and Wi'iere forni man may be varied as desired.
For :turther compneiiension of the inv n.- Jsion, end of the obgects and advantages ltliereo', reference will be lied to the following description. and accompanying drawings, and-to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Figure of the drawings is e side eieverion of :i port-ion of n iruin adapted. ro ioe oon- 'rolled oyiny stein, indicn'cing` iiy 1n engagement with the cooperating station. ewig nient.
Fig. 2 is e diagrammatic. the electrical connections.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged end elevaaion, indieating also e portion. of the station.
7Fig. Li is e detail side elevation of `the een-- tact member carried by the trein showing also a portion of tlie fixed station Contact with which it engages.
Fig.' 5 is a. fragmentary detail indicating *une door operating means.
Fi 6 is o detail horizon'ia View oic ne ControlA adjustment device.
in the drawings the reference numeral i View showin indicates in general a. passenger cer sucn :LS
s in common use in underground city transit systems Winch ere generali;L7 known sub- Speeeaion o Letters Patent.

Each of these Wires terminates in loose portion 29 carrying a plug 3,0 adapted to e age in any of the sockets. F rom 'these blrs wires 31' lead through a battery 32, or other source of .power, and switches 33 to' ground.
" Carried by each car isla contact member adapted to engage a selected one of the rails 2l when the train comes to a stop, this contact member here comprising a wheel 35 journaled in a yoke 36 fixed on the, upper end of a pin 3'? which is slidably mounted in a bracket 38 carried by the car, -a spring 39 normally pressing the wheel upward While a collar 420 on the pin limits the upward movement.' From these contact members 'wires 4:1 lead to one terminal of each solenoid l0 while from the opposite terminais of the solenoids :wires 42 lead to ground. lvlhere the doors onrfopposite'sides have to beqrequired toghe alternately opened in the course of a run I preerablyprovide a pair of these contact members spaced site sides ci the car as shown in Fig. 2 and arrange the railsl at the different stations accordingly. Where the doors"` on one side only are opened during the entire run a switch may he provided to switch the contacts from one set of door control devices to the other at the end of the run.
The operation is as follows: rlhe switches 33 will be located at suitable points on the statica platform and the wires 24 will lead 4in lgroups to the 'different bars 27 accord'- ing to which section or' the train .is to have its doors controlled from each individualswitch. in the present instance the three cars at one end are controlled by one switch, four center cars by the second switch, and the three cars at the other end by the third switch. The wires 24 as will be seen, lead in groups ot' three, four and three to the .respective bars 27.
The motorman will bring the train to a stop at a position to have each wheel contact in engagement with the proper rail and when either of the switches is closed the current will iiow through the solenoids oil the group o't cars which are in contact with the rails connected to the bar with which that particular switch is connected. `When the switc opened the springs bring the door operating; devices to normal position wit the doors closed.
lt will be apparent of course that by changing the grouping of the wires upon the bars the number of oars whose doors are controlled by an individual switch may the number the bars 26, together with on oppol ed to come to rest, car door operating means,
means for electrically controlling said car door` opeating means, including a contact member on the car vadapted to engage the said rail, and a` hand Switch adapted for mounting on a stationary part independent of the car.
2. ln a car door control system for trains, a plurality 01"' contact rails under ywhich the cars are adapted to come to rest, electri` cally controlled car door operating' means including' a contact member for each car adapted to engage a selected one of said rails when the car is at restr a plurality ot' hand switches, and means whereby a closed circuit through a source ot' power may be established through either of said switches and diii'er'ent lgroups of said rails7 said means including' the electrical control means of'the cars whose before mentioned Contact members are engaging the rails of the said groups.
3. In a car door control system for trains,' a plurality ot' conta-ct rails under which the cars are adapted to come to rest. electrically controlled car door operating means including a contact member for each car adapted to engage a selected one of said rails when the car is at rest, a plurality ot hand switches.y and means whereby a closed circuit through a source ot power may he established through either ot said switches and different groups of said rails, said means including' the electrical control means of the cars whose before mentioned dontact members are engaging the rails ofthe said group, and means whereby the number ot cars in a group may bc raried.
