To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, FRANCIS D. DEVLIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Haven, New Haven county, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Counter Display Folding Box, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates' tothat class of folding, usually paper, boxes, or containers, supplied with means for supporting them, as upon a merchants counter, in inclined positions, facilitating display of 'their contents to customers, and its objects comprise supplying such means which are not only more economical in manufacture, and more stable and more attractive in appearance as such supports, but also'are capable of alternatively serving the additional purpose of a coverffor the box, and this more sanitarily and with less injury to, or molestation of, the contents than heretofore.
ll attain these, and other useful, objects by constructing my box and its appurtenances as follows, reference being had to the acfio sitions as in companying drawings which are designed to illustratively disclose a type thereof embodying my universally applicable, novelprincipl'es of construction, the said type being one in which, as is preferable, the container, and all of its said accessories, or appurtenances, are unitary, being cut and formed as a naturally coherent unit out of a single sheet of paper, strawboard, or other suitable material. v

the material being creased, or scored, as at 12, between the end C and the top, and also between the latter and its said extensions and Hap. rl`he extensions 10, 10, each carry .an inlay 13, ,the material being creased, or scored, as at 14, between them. The bottom B, being the side of the box opposite the opening, carries projecting from opposite sides thereof other` than the sides carrying the ends C, C", side extensions, or aps, comprehensively designated by F, F", the materialthereof being creased, or scored, asy at 15 so that the said flaps arevbendable relatively to said bottom in either direction. The flap li" comprises a component 16 and a thereby carried extension 17, carrying tongues, 18, 18. The iiap F comprises between itscomponents 16 and 17 a crease, or
score, 19, which is parallel with-a side of the side, or bottom, `B of the box, and also, in its component 16, a crease, or score, 20, which is, as shown, diagonal to said side.
1The iap F comprises a component 21, carrying an extension, 22, containing a slot, 28, and carrying a further extension, or prolongation, 24, containing two slots 24J, 24".

instances, so as to enable thevpart 24 to be readily severed from the remainder of the box.
The blank, having been produced as above described, is folded upon the crease line 7 between B and C and the securing flap, 11, being bent over to underlie C, is secured to the latter, preferably by a suitable adhesive.
To set up the blank from its thus collapsed state to thatemployable as a box, the bot- .tom B is suitably supported, say in horizontal presentation, the ends C, C', upraised therefrom until vertical, the extensions 8, 8, inturned to right angles with said ends, the extensions 10, 10, downturned vertically `and the inlays `13, 13,
meanwhile simultaneously inturned and inserted between the bottom edges of 8, 8, and the bottom B, thus locking these parts into a box form.
The flaps F, VF', are then manipulated as follows, viz: 1 r
1. To function as a cover, the flaps are turned, or folded, inward until their respective component parts 16 and 21 contact in parallelism with the outerl surface of the sides' 10, 10. The extensions 17 and 22 are then further bent, or folded, respectively upon'the crease lines 19 and 25 until' the exy tension 22 and its prolongation 24 overlie theopening of the box and the tongue c arrying extension 17 overlies the prolongation 24. The tongues 18, 18, are then inserted inr the slots 24, 24 and the box and its con- .i tents are thus securely covered, Fig. 2 illustrating the 'relative positions of the parts when thus interlocked for the purpose last specified;
. 2. To "function as a support for the box in its inclined, ordisplay, position, the es 18, 18, are withdrawn from the slots, 24 v24, thus unlocking' the flaps. The latter are bent backward beyond the outer surface of the bottom of the box. The prolongation 24 of the flap F is bent backward on'the crease, or'score, 28, until its surface contacts flatly with the surface of the extension v22`of the component 21 of the ap F; the component 21 is then bent upon the diagonal crease, or score, 26, until one end of the prolongation-24 contacts with the outer surface of the bottom -B of the box.I The-component 16 of theflap Ff is then matassa bent inward upon its diagonal crease, or score, 20, and therewith its extension 17, until one of the tongues 18 registers with the slot 27 of the component 21 of the flap F, into which said tongue is then inserted; the other tongue 18 is then in register with, and is inserted into, the slot 23 of the extension 22 of the flap F, thus locking the parts into position in which they are thus adapted to-serve as a support, or easel, tilting the box and its contents into an inclined position such as to facilitate the display of the latter, Figs. 3, 4 and 5 illustrating the respective. positions of the various parts when arranged and interlocked for the purpose last described.
rlhe construction and forms are such as to be exceptionally economical of stock or material required to accomplish the purposes described. rllhey are also permissive of finishing the surface of the stock, and of doing all the lithographing and printing, on one side only of the blank, thus also contributing to economy.
The interlocked covering of the open- ,ing of the box, and of its contents, bythev flaps .and their transposition and interlocking to serve as backbraces, or supports, for the box in its inclined, or display, position, are rendered exceptionally easy to the unskilled and not destructive of theparts, which can bel repeatedly employed to perform their respective cover, and brace, functions. The form and construction are also particularly advantageous. from the' points of View of cleanliness and sanitation in that the necessity inprevious display boxes of forcing portions of thecover or of the easel braces into contact with the contents of the box is obviated; andthe box is,`in its inclined position, more strongly and stably supported than heretofore.
In cases lin which the re-c'overing is not desired after display, the prolongation 24 of the flap F may be advantageously torn 0H along the crease, or score, 28, the latter being, for this reason cut,or indented, deeper than the other creases.
Having 'now described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is the following, viz:
1. A rectangular collapsible paper box Y having in its top an opening for display therethrough of the contents, and a bottom carrying a pair of flaps projecting therefrom and dimensioned and shaped to fold `1n one dlrection and overlap each other as a cover for said opening, and in the opposite direction as ,a support for the box in inclined position; and means carried bysaid flaps to interlock them in each of their said respective positions. ,Y
2. A rectangular collapsible paper box `.having in its top an opening for display therethrough of the contents, and carrying a pair of'iaps projecting from the bottom thereof and dimensioned and shaped to fold in one direction and overlap each other as a cover for said opening, and in the opposite direction as a support for the box in inclined position, each of said flaps containing a crease, or score parallel with, and` also one diagonal to an edge of said bottom; and means integral with said flaps to interlock them in their said respective positions.
3. A collapsible unitary paper box comprising a rectangular bottom p ortionbendably carrying projecting from opposite sides thereof two opposite ends of the box and,
15 projecting from `the oppositesides thereof extensions, or flaps, each comprising a crease or score, Which is diagonal to, and a crease,
.or score, which is parallel with anvedge of said bottom,one of said flaps containing slots, and the other of said iaps carrying tongues disposed to coperate with each other to interlock the aps, andthe said flaps being dimensioned so as to, overlappingly cover the top of the box when bent in one direction, and when bent in the opposite direction overlapping-ly interlock behind the bottom and in a plane inclined thereto.
