Be it known that I, DAVID D. GREEN, a citizen ofthe United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State ofVVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Washing-Machine Tubs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,

and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to new and useful ject to provide an arrangementwherein an exceedingly strong and durable structure may be procured with the use of relatively light sheet metal for the receptacle and cover, and wherein the cover may be secured in place with a binding engagement by use of a single fastening member.

A further object resides in the provision of a cover structure particularly adapted for use in connection with the cylindrical wall of a'washing-machine tub in such manner as to prevent leakage incidental to splashing of liquid within the tub.

With the above and other objects and advantages in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel features of construction,

combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more particularly described and defined by the appended claims.

In carrying out myinvention, the material bounding the ends of the mouth is turned downwardly at each end to provide flanges 7 which have their extremities again turned at 8 to provide a reinforcement, and each of the flanges isinclined in 'thesame direction obliquely with-respect to the vertical plane. I The material of the side wallsv 6 is extended at the sides of the mouth opening and is bent downwardly along" the inner faces of the walls and then bent inwardly to form'seating ledges 9 disposed slightly above the plane of the lower 'edgesgof the flanges 7 My cover member comprises the usual body portion 10 curved to afford continuationof the cylindrical surface of the wall 5 when the cover is in place, and the sides and ends of the body are bent laterally to form side and'endflanges 1 1 and 12 respectively, the side flanges being disposed at right angles to the body of the cover, to fit snugly between the inwardly turned portions of the side walls of the tub, while the end flanges 12 are inclined obliquely in parallelism to correspond to the inclination of thebody flanges 7 and to fit 7 thereagainst. The lower portions of the flanges 12 are bent inwardly to form reinforcements 13 holding the major portions of the flanges in rigid shape, while the lower edges of the flanges 11 are turned inwardly at 14 to seat on theledges 9 when the cover" is disposed 'inclosing position. The cover carries a suitable handle 15 and a hasp member 16 is pivoted to the end portion of the body member having the lesser angle with its flange 12, said hasp member being,

engageable with a keeper clip 17 on the adj acent portion of the body; It is noted that the flanges-12 form'differing angles with the body member by reason of their oblique inclination in the same direction.

I have thus provided an exceedingly simple and eflicient cover particularly adapted for washing-machine tubs, which may be effectively secured in placewith the use "of a single fastening member, and it is noted that as the hasp carrying end of the cover is forced downwardly, a camming action will be set up between the adjacent cover and body flanges 12 and 7 respectively, causing the cover to move rearwardly to procure binding engagement between the other pair of flanges 7 and 12, and securely locking the cover in place, and preventing leakage past the cover. It is further noted that the flange members for procuring this {interlocking and binding action serve to materially brace the tub body and cover sheeting, and the stresses incidental to securement of the cover member in place are distributed in such uniform manner as to permit the use of a maximum weight of metal at these places.

While I have described my invention as being associated with a washing-machine structure for which it is particularly adapted, it will be appreciated that my invention may be embodied in the covers for other types of receptacles, and that various changes and modifications of structure may be employed to meet differing conditionslof use and manufacture without departingin any manner from the spirit of my invention.

It will be noted that the flanges 12 and 11 form edge faces on the cover member on opening, and means for securing said cover member with its outer surface flushwith the outer surface of the receptacle.

2. The combination with a receptacle hav-- ing an opening boundedby edge faces, op-

posed faces of said opening being inclined obliquely in substantially parallel relation,

faces of the cover member forming consequently different angles with the surface of the cover member, a fastening means for the cover member at the end portion thereof having the lesserangle of its end face, and

a seat for said cover member inwardly of the edge faces of the receptacle.

3. The combination with a receptacle having an opening, of the material at theedge portions of said opening being turned inwardly to provide flanges, the lower portions of opposed flanges being turned to ward each other to provide seats, and a removable cover sheet having its edge portionsturned laterally and connected to providexflanges fitting against the flanges of the body member, the lower edges of said flanges being turnedinwardly to provide ledges adapted to rest on said seats.

4. The combination with a receptacle having an opening, of the material at the edge portions of said opening being turned inwardly to provide'flanges, the lower portions of opposed flanges being turned toward each other to provide seats, a removable cover sheet having its edge portions turnedlaterally andconnected to provide flanges fitting against the flanges of thebody member, the lower edges of said flanges being turned inwardly to provide ledges adapted to rest on said seats, the opposed pairs of flanges ofthe receptacle body and cover sheet being obliquely inclined in substantially parallel relation, and means for securing one end portion of the cover sheet, to the body member. i
