Description

G. KUHNS.
Patented May 17, 1921.
UNITED s GEORGE xomvs; or TEMPIiEiDKLLHOMAfu wnnnon. a I
Application filed April 1, 1920. Serial No. 370,498.
To all whom it may concern:
-Be it known that I, GEORGE KUHNs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Temple, in the county of Cotton and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The obj ect of the invention is to provide a comparatively simple and relatively inexpensive wrench for general pipe rod and nut use wherein the jaw faces subjected to wear in operation may readily be interchanged or replaced without involving the loss of the body portion or main features of the structure, and furthermore to provide a construction whereby the elements which are directly subjected to wear may be chilled or tempered to a higher degree of hardness without subjecting the other portions of the tool to a similar treatment, and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side view of a wrench wherein the jaws are particularly adapted for use upon rods, pipes and similar round objects not fitted with angular wrench seats.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail View in perspective of the j aw-holding end of the shank.
Fig. 4: is a similar view of the reversible fixed jaw.
Fig. 5 is a similar view of the movable Fig. 6 is a like view of the bushing for the pivot bolt by which the jaws are secured to the shank. g
In the construction illustrated the shank or handle 10 is bifurcated at its inner end to form spaced ears 11 in which are formed registering bolt openings 12 for the reception of a transverse pivot bolt 13, and pivotally connected with the shank by means of said bolt is a swinging or movable jaw 14: having a removable or replaceable serrated face 15 adapted for cooperation with the serrated faces 16 of a fixed jaw consisting of independent members 17 also secured to the shank by means of the transverse bolt 13 and having in their inner faces seats or cavities 18 for the respective reception of the cars 11 formed by the bifurcation of the shank.
The seats or cavities 18 are designed to snugly fit the ears 11 so as to dlspose the inner surfaces of the body portions of the fixed jaw members 17 flush or in common jaw, it being preferable, however, to dispose an annular bushing 20 upon the portion of the bolt between the inner surfaces of the cars 11 to fit in the relatively enlarged openlng 21 provided in the pivotal end of said swinging aw.
The fixed jaw members are preferably provided with oppositely facing concaved engaging faces 16, in cooperation with either of which the serrated face of the swinging jaw may act, .it being obvious that the fixed jaw members are interchangeable with reference to the cars 11 to dispose either of their serrated faces in opposing relation with the swinging jaw, and furthermore that the swinging jaw is reversible with relation to the shank so as to swing in either direction from the plane thereof. Obviously with this provision for interchanging or rearranging the jaw members, it is possible to utilize to the fullest extent the gripping faces of the jaws, and moreover the face of the movable jaw may be renewed or replaced when worn without involving therenewal of the entire jaw structure.
In connection with the movable jaw it is preferableto employ an operating rod 22 provided with a stem 23 extending through a suitable perforation 24 in said jaw and operating in a guide eye 25 located at a con venient point on the shank, so that by the pressure of the thumb or a finger of the hand grasping the handle the swinging jaw may be moved into proper relation with the opposing face of the fixed jaw to properly engage an interposed pipe or rod. In the construction illustrated the guide eye is formed upon a shank 26 extending through the handle and fitted with an adjustable nut 27 What is claimed is:
A wrench having its shank provided at one end with a bifurcation. forming parallel spaced ears, fixed jaw members having op-' positely directed concaved faces and also provided at their inner sides with cavities Arias PATENT OFFICE.
or seats for receiving said ears, a common bolt extending through the ears and the fixed jaw members for securing the latter in operative relation with the handle, and a pivotal jaw mounted upon said bolt in the interval between the spaced ears and having a concaved gripping face for opposing relation with the faces of the fixed jaw, a bushing being interposed between said bolt and the movable jaw.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
GEORGE KUHNS.
