RAY H. iFI'lZ GERALD, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
DISPENSING AND DISPLAYING cnn'roN.
T 0 all 7.0 ham it may 0mm Be it known that I, RAY H. Frrz GERALD,
I a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have in.- vented certain new and'useful Improvements in Dispensing and Displaying Cartons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled-in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in dispensing and display cartons and more particularly to such as are made of paper or card board,one object of the invention being to provide a carton from which cylindrical articles can be readily dispensed, and to so construct the device as to provide a tray in front of the discharge opening, which shall be formed integral with the stock from which the body of the carton is made.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a view showing the blank from which the body of the carton and the tray are made;
Fig. 2 is a view of the blank from which the inclined bottom member is made; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the inclined bottom member, and Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the assembled device.
The body of the carton 1 is made rectangular in form and comprises front and back members 2, 3 and side members 4, 5 integral therewith. Theside members are provided at their upper ends with flaps 6 and the back member 3 is made at its upper end with a flap 7 provided with a gluing flange 8,the flaps 6 and 7 being bent to form the top of the carton. A flap 9 may be provided at the upper end of the front 2 and utilized for advertising purposes. Flaps 10, 10 are provided at the lower ends of the sides 4, 5, and cooperate with bottom member 11 at the lower end of the back 3 to form the bottom of the carton. The bottom member 11 is made with an extension 12 from which a tray 13 is formed to receive articles from the carton, through a discharge opening 14.
The portion 15 of the extension 12 forms the front wall 19 of the 'tray,-the end portion 20 being bent so as to be disposed parallel :3

front wall of the tray as shown in Fig. 3. "I
The ends 23, 23 of the tray are cut from the stock of the. carton at the lower end of the front 2 and areintegral with the sides 4, 5. The traysends 23 are made with tabs 24 which enter between the folds of the front v wall 19 of the tray.
The end members 23, 23 are provided with tongues 27 which overlie the bottom of the;
por-
tray and may project under the end tion or flange 20 of the frontv wall 19. The. tongues 27 are provided with other tongues 27 27*, which may be inserted, with the tabs of the tray.
Located within the lower portion of the carton, is an inclined bottom member 25 which is so constructed and placed in the carton as to provide a platform 26 inclining downwardly and forwardly from the rear member 3 of the carton to the front thereof, its front edge terminating at the bottom of the discharge opening 14. The bottom .24 between the folds of the front wall 19 member 25 is provided with an upright 1 member 26 which depends from the upper edge of the inclined platform 26 and lies against the back member 3 of the carton. From the lower edge of the upright member 26 a base member 28 extends forwardly and rests upon the bottom of the carton. The base member 28 terminates rearwardly of the front of the carton and is made with an upturned flange 29 which serves as a brace for the intermediate portion of the inclined platform '26. The upturned flange 29 is provided-with a plurality of upstanding tongues 30 (which may be located at the :end portions of said flange) and these tongues extend through notches 31 made in the side edge portions of the platform and project upwardly above the upper face of the latter at points rearwardly of the front lower edge of said inclined platform.
The inclined platform, of the bottom member will tend to cause the cylindrical articles within the carton to move forwardly,
but the upstanding tongues will act as baffles to hold back the major bulk of the articles, permitting only the front vertical tier of articles to be disposed in a vertical plane in front of that of said tongue. When an article passes through the discharge opening 14; and enters'the tray, the next article in the front tier will drop into position and an article will move from the top of the next tier to the top of the front tier of articles, and this will continue, as articles pass through the discharge opening, until only two articles remain on the bottom inclined platform. These last two articles will be held back by the tongues 30, and the emerchant may cause them to pass over said tongues by jarring or shaking the carton. When an article is in the tray, it will hold back the article in line with the discharge opening.
Various changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit or limiting its scope and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettray in front of said carton, the'parts of said tray being formed from the same blank from which the body of the carton is formed,
and a separate bottom member within the carton and comprising an inclined platform extending from the back of the carton to the bottom of said discharge opening and tongues projecting upwardly. from the upperface of said inclined platform rearwardly of the discharge opening.
2. A blank for a carton comprising front, back, side, and bottom members, portion of the front member cutaway forming a disforming the ends of the tray having tabs to enter between the folds of the front of the tray, and the portions forming the ends of the tray having tongues to overlie the bottom of the tray and said tongues having other tongues to enter between the folds of the front of the tray.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. V
RAY H. FITZ GERALD.
