Description

w. L. DAUGHTRY.
v GUARDRAIL CHAIR. APPLICATION FILED.AUG.4, 1920.
1,378,328. Patented May 17,1921.
INVEN TOR.
ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES WILLIE L. DAUGHTRY, OF ORLANDO, FLORIDA.
GUARD-RAIL CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1'7, 1921.
Application filed August 4, 1920. Serial No. 401,197.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIE L. DAUGHTRY, a citizen of the United States, residin at Orlando, in the county of Orange and tate of Florida, have invented a certain new and useful Guard-Rail Chair, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in railway guards, especially for guarding the wheels of a car or train against derailment, particularly in approaching the frog.
The invention has for its object to provide for safety in passing over the rails at the point indicated.
A further object is to carry out the aforesaid purpose in a simple and effective man ner and by employing few parts and unattended with much expense.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description of the construction, arrangement and operation of the parts as will also the above stated ob- 'ects.
J The invention therefore consists of certain instrumentalities and features of construction substantially as hereinafter more fully preferred embodiment of my invention, or
one form thereof wherein it will be understood that various changes and modifications as relate to the detailed construction and arrangement ofparts may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as covered by the claim and in which drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention as applied for use to a railway.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my invention.
As characteristic features of my invention, I have provided an element or casting which may be termed a guard, designated as 1, preferably constructed as shown, 11. 6., approximately of L-shaped outline, the resultant vertical arm or formation 1 constituting the guard proper, and extending in the plane of the wheel, the horizontal arm 1 extending transversely from the main rail to the guard rail. The guard 1 has formed integrally with its horizontal arm 1*, a base 2, the connection between said base and arm, however, being effected by means of a constricted or narrow neck-like portion 3, thereby forming slots or recesses 4 adapted to receive and provide for positioning the device or guard lntermediate the main rail and a guard or anchorlng rail guard, and to receive opposite flanges of the main-rail and the guard-rail for anchoring or securing the guard or device in position to the guard-rail and main-rail. This device or arrangement provides, it will be seen, an exceedingly simple, inexpensive and efi'ective means for guardmg against the inadvertent or accidental derailment of the car or train wheels,
especially as-is otherwise liable to occur in rallwaysad acent the narrowed relation between ralls, as for lnstance, at or contiguous to the frog. It will be understood that the usual spikes are driven through theorifices in the base of the guard 1 for securing thesame in place alongside the rails.
In View of the foregoing it is considered that the facilities and advantages of my invention. will be appreciated and that it is devoid of'numerous elements such as bolts and nuts, keys and various other accessories or adjunctive parts for its instalment, it being but a single unit and requiring no mechanical adjustment or readjustment of parts therefor.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent: A device a rail guard chair comprising a base member having a neck-like constricted upward extension, said constricted upward extension being formed with laterally extended termiof the type described, including i nals, said terminals having their lower surfaces in right lines thereby adapted to form with said base member .upon each side of said constricted neck-like portion an undercut slot adapted to receive the facing base forming flanges of the track rail and, the ard rail, said laterally extended terminals adapted to form an upwardly presented continuous concaved surface, the resultantterminals of which abut the track rail and guardrail along the web adjacent thetread and the'web adjacent the base, r'espectively, all being in a continuouspiece' In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
' WILLIE L. DAUGHTRY.
