RENEWABLE FUSE.
'Patented May 17, 1921i.
Application led December 24, 1918. Serial No'. 268,135.
To all whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that we, LEON W. RosnN'rHAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at 106 Central Park west, in the city, county, and State of New York, and GUs'rAvn J. LANG, a citizen of the United States, residing at S49 Boulevard east, Veehawken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Renewable Fuses; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. Y
The present invention'relates to renewable fuses of the kind which consists of a permanent fuse holder with terminals for connecting it in an electric circuit and a renewable fuse adapted to be inclosed by the holder and tachable manner to the terminals thereof. The object of the invention is to provide a permanent and comparatively cheap fuse holder, which, when assembled, gives reliable and permanent contact between it and the inclosed fuse, and at the same time permits rapid renewal of a blownout fuse without the use of special tools.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating several embodiments of the invention, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a fuse of the knife blade type; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is an end view of the cap; Fig. 4 is a section on line 4--4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a ferrule type of fuse; Fig. 7 is a central longitudinal section thereof; Fig. 8 is a section on line 8--8 of Fig. 7 and Fig. 9 is a section on line 9-9 of Fig. 7;.
In both embodiments illustrated, the cy-V lindrical tube 1 lis made or formed of liber, impregnated paper, or other suitable material, and has in each end a metal end plate 2 with its outer surface substantially flush with the end of the tube. plates has three depending legs 3 riveted at 4 to the tube.
In the knife blade type of fuse shown in Figs. 1 to 5, the fuse 5 extends through the tube substantially parallel to the axis thereof, and through the openings in the end plates. The end portions of the fuse are electrically connected in a de-Y Each of these l turned over the end plates to form fuse terminals 6, one of which extends over the outside of the tube to provide a projecting portion at 7 suitable for an Vexposed capacity marking thereon. I
TheV metal caps 8 have knife blades 9 riveted or otherwise suitably fastened to form the terminals of the fuse holder Vfor igisertion in the spring clips of a panel board.`
10 with Each end plate 2 has an opening substantially parallel sides in alinement with the opening in the end plate at the other end of the tube, and has two'screw-threaded openings 11 for end screws 12 which extend through the expanding slots 13 of the cap. By making the sides of the openings 10 parallel, no part of either expanding slot registers with the opening in the end plate when the fuse is assembled. In this way the path for the escaping gases upon blow-out of the fuse is made tortuous to providev a mufler effect, and still the end caps may be removed and replaced without entirely removing the screws.
In the ferrule type of fuse shown in Figs. 6 to 9, a central end screw 14 fastens each cap 15 to an end'plate 16 and clamps the perforated terminal 17 tween them. The end plates have openings 19 in alinement with each other, and each opening has divergent side walls. The gas openings 2O in the caps are covered on the inside Vwith gauze 21 or other suitable material.
In both modifications, the tube has a recess 22 extending from its outer end to the open endlof the cap, so as to accommodate the projecting endvof the fuse terminal in such manner that the cap snugly fits entirely around the tube and prevents the exhaust of the gases V'of combustion between the tube and caps.
of the-fuse 18V be- Having thus described our invention what Y we claim is: l
1. A renewable fuseconsisting of a tube, end plates fast with said tube and having openings with substantially parallel sides, a Y
"fuse passing through the tube and said openplates to Y preventk and to clamp the fuse terminals between the plates and caps, said caps having expanding slots completely out of registry with the openings in the plates to provide a tortuous path for Vthe escaping gases upon blow-out of the fuse.
2. A renewable fuse consisting of Va tube7 end plates fast with said tube and a fuse Vpassing through the tube'and folded over the outside of the plates to forni fuse terminals, caps snugly fitting entirely around the outer surface ofthe tube, and end screws passing through the caps into screw-threaded engagement vwith the plates to prevent endwise displacement of the caps on the tube and to clamp the fuse terminals between the f plates and caps,y said plates and caps being provided with staggered openings for the muffled escape of gases. v
3. A renewable fuse consisting of a tube,
. for the end plates fast with said tube and having openings with substantially parallelsides, a fuse passing through the tube and said openings with its ends folded over the outside of the plates to forni Jfuse terminals, caps snugly fitting around the outer surface of the tube, and end screws passing through thecaps into screw-threaded engagement with the plates to prevent the endwise displaeelnent'of the caps on the tube and to s
