V HENRI rnrssr ntn, or 'IPARIS FRAfiCEa HINGE FOR EHICLE-Booms.
T 0 all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, HENRI TEIssEIRn, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing in Paris, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges for Vehicle-Bodies, of which the following 1s a specification.
This invention has for its object an improved hinge for use on vehicles (particularly automobiles) which are convertible 1n a manner to be either open or closed, and in which the window frames in the top are independent of the carriage doors.
The improved hinge is attached to the upper part of the fixed portion or tonneau of the carriage and its axis or spindle 1s adapted to receive a connecting part of the removable top of the carriage in line with the extension of the pivot axis.
One form of the improved hinge 1s shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in sect on, of the hinge. 1 0
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line X X in Fig. 1.
F i 3 is a side elevation of a vehiclebody, ShOWlIlg the application of the inventlon to the doors thereof.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the hinges comprise-tubular or pivotal portions or eyes, and leaves or fastening plates united thereto respectively. The inner pivotal member is a tubular spindle, being a hollow sleeve, its bore forming a socket t to receive the outwardly prolonged pintle a, on which is pivoted the window frame in the removable top.
In the construction shown, the tubular spindle or sleeve b is attached to the middle plate h, which connects the hinge with the body. or door; and the tubular portions m :0 are integral with plates 0, d, respectively. The tubular sleeve 1) is reduced at its end portions b 12 to'form journals which enter within the tubular portions 00 m forming thus a hollow pintle for the hinge.
In Fig. 1 the upper pintle z is shown as slightly raised out of its socket; but when 1n use it is pushed down within the socket 23 until its stop shoulder a. abuts against the top of the hinge. with the axis on which the hinge members turn.
It will be noted that the hinges are em bedded in the thickness of the casing'of the carriage body, this special arrangement bearticulations.
The socket t is coaxial V PATENT OFFICE 7 v Specification of Letters Patent, c. Pate t d Ma 17 1921" I Application filed October 23, 1917. Serial No. 198,167.
ing employed for the purpose of obviating the placing of the pintle i in a plane outanalogous position, which would cause gaps allowlng air to The hinge being thus constructed, the plvotal axls of the'window frame is exactly in the BXt6I1S10I1 of the axis of the door hinge; it suffices to mount the window frame above the door by any suitable means, such as for instance by means of a catch or a screw rod, in order that the door and the w1ndow frame' can open and close together by turningproperly around the same axis and remaining consequently in the same vertical plane.
It is quite evident that the invention need not be llmited to the above described construction, and that any suitable modification can be adopted in each particular case. c For example, in order to effect the juncture of the two spindles, either one may be bored out to receive the other, it being within the invention to invert the construction with the same result as in the described construction.
Having thus described myjinvention and pass, or the use of special the best means 'I know for carrying the same 7 into practical efiect, what I clalm 1s 1. A hinge for the door of a vehicle body having a removable top, comprising hinge eyes and lateral attaching plates, the hinge eyes formed as tubular sleeves, the inner one forming a coaxial socket adapted to receive the pintle of a hinge for a window of such detachable top.
2. A hinge comprising lateral attaching plates and tubular pivotal sleeves on such plates respectively, the inner pivotal member being tubular to form a coaxial socket for receiving a detachable pintle.
3. The combination with a vehicle body having a removabletop, the body having a door and the top a hinged window sash above thedoor, of a hinge comprising tubular pivotal portions, the inner one forming a tubular spindle, and a prolonged pintle entering the hollow .of such tubular spindle.
4. A door. hinge for a vehicle body having a removable top, comprlsing tubular pivotal sleeves, one within the other, the inner one forming a socket adapted to receive the pintle of the hinge of a window sash in the removable top.
' 5. A hinge comprising an inner tubular my name in the presence of twosubs'cribing sleeve having a middle attaching plate, the wltnesses.
end portions of the sleeve beyondzsuch late being reduced to form journals, and outer e V 5 sleeves turning on such journals and having -Witnesses-:' attaching plates. CHAS. P. PREssLY,
