Be it known that I, Trn'cononn T. SEAL, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Wheeling, county of Ohio and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Thread Holders and Cutters, of which the following is a specification.

' has commenced, thus not only preventing the needle-thread from being withdrawn from the eye of the needle by a rapid upward movement of the take-up arm ofthe sewing machine when operation of the latter is started, but also insuring that concatenation will occur between said needle-thread and the shuttle-thread from the very beginning of the next sewing operation.

Another object of the lnvention 1s to provide a clamp or holder of the character mentioned whichmay be'accurately adjusted to apply any desired tension for gripping the threads,or to suit any weight, or thickness, of thread. I

' With these and-other objects in view, the invention resides in the features of construction which will hereinafter be described, reference being had to 1 the. accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is an end elevation of the head of an ordinary type of sewing machine, showing my invention applied thereto, and- Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2, Fig. 1.

Secured to the presser-foot bar 5'by means of a screw is the device which constitutes the present invention, the same consisting of. a s ngle length or strip of thin resilient material, as sheet steel, which is doubled upon itself to form an elongated plate like memher 7 and a relatively overlying member 8. Saidmember 7 is fiat and plain throughout and 1s adapted to have its back seat closely 1n fixed positlon against a face of the presserfoot bar at a suitable point with its free end' pro ectmg laterally a suitable distance from said bar. The member 8 has its middle portion or that portion; which ispenetrated by the screw 6, slightly bowed outward or away" from the fixed member 7 so that tension may be exerted through adjustment of saidscrew to regulate the width of the thread-receiving space between the fixed member 7 and the. yleldable member 8 at the inner end of the entrance throat 9 which is formed by curvmg or lnclining the free end 8 of said yieldable member away from the fixed member.
