newness.
Application filed May 8,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LEONARD WALKER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, has invented new and useful Improvements in Shade-Roller Supports, of which the following is a specification. 2
It is the principal object of the invention to provide a shade roller support by means of which the roller itself maybe raised or lowered relative to the window frame, so that light may be allowed to enter into the room above the shade when it is so desired.
A further purpose of the invention is to provide a device of this character, the construction of which is comparatively simple, the operation of which is effective and the manufacture of which is inexpensive.
Other and further purposes appear in the following description wherein the invention is set forth in detail.
As shown and described, a specific embodiment of the invention is adhered to, but to this embodiment the invention is not to be restricted. The reduction to practice may suggest certain desirable changes or alterations and the right is claimed to make any which do not deviate in scope from the anneXed claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
F igure 1 is a perspective view showing the practical application of the invention, the vertical stiles of a window frame being indicated in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fi 1.
ig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4: of Fi 1.
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the operat ing handle for the device.

of these shafts and disposed so that the chains 7 which are inclosed within the two housings may traverse their respective sprockets 4 and 5. Disposed within each housing there is a cross web 8 defining a shallow space 9 and a space 10, the front lay of the chains 7 traveling in the space 10 and the rear lay in the space 9. The webs 8 extend for substantially the full length of the housings but terminate adjacent the sprockets 5 and 4 respectively.
The two sprocket wheels 4L being carried on a common shaft 6 effect the movement of the chains 7 in unison and that they may be operated when desired, one extremity of one of the shafts 3 is squared for the reception of a crank wrench 17, the turning handle 18 of which is pivotally connected to the wrench so that it may be folded when not in use.
Un their facing sides the two housings 1 are provided with longitudinal slots 13 in which are mounted the blocks 14:, these blocks being capable of sliding movement in the slots and being carried by the studs 15 which on their facing ends are formed with sockets for the trunnions of a shade roller such as that indicated at 19. The studs 15 interior to the housings are provided with sprocket wheels 12 disposed in the space 10 in the housings and these sprocket wheels are adapted to traverse the web 8 which is perforated as indicated at 11 and the forward lay of the two chains engage these sprocket wheels at diametrically opposite points from those which engage the web.
It is obvious that the shade roller may be elevated or lowered with reference to the window frame by rotating in the desired direction that shaft 3 with which the crank handle 17 is engaged. If rotated in one direction the front lay of the chain will traverse upward and the sprockets 12 will be caused to traverse the webs 8 toward the top of the housing with the resultant raising of the shade roller. Reverse movement of the turning handle will result, of course, in the lowering of the shade roller.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. The combination with a pair of housings for vertical disposition on the vertical stiles of a window frame, of sprocket -wheels rotatably mounted in the housings adjacent the tops and bottoms thereof, chains trained over the sprocket wheels in each 'housing, operative connections between certain sprocket wheels in the two housings, shade roller brackets slidably mounted in the housings, and operative connections between the sprocket wheels and the brackets, whereby movement imparted to thesprocket wheels will result in raising and lowering the brackets for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with housings for vertical disposition on the vertical stiles of a window frame, of shade roller brackets slidably mounted in the housings, a trans verse shaft spanning the two housings at the upper end and equipped with sprocket wheels interior to the housings, rotatably mounted sprocket wheels within the housings at the lower ends, chains trained over the sprocket wheels, sprocket wheels carried by the shade roller brackets and engaged by the chains, and perforated webs within the housings and traversed by the sprocket wheels carried by the brackets, whereby rotation of. the first said sprocket wheels may effect the raising and lowering of the brackets in the manner and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination with. a pair of housings for disposition vertically on the vertical stiles of a window frame, the said housings being formed with longitudinal slots on their facing sides, shade roller brackets slidably mounted in said slots, webs within the housings and formed with perforations, sprocket wheels carried by the brackets and engaging in the said perforations, chains within the housings and engaging the sprockets, and means for supporting and rotating the chains whereby the brackets may be elevated in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
LEONARD \VALKER.
