To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN B. NESMEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulley-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
T his invention relates to improvements in hoisting devices and more particularly to blocks of the multiple sheave type.
An important object of this invention is to provide a block of the multiple sheave type having novel means whereby the shackle oi the same may be readily and conveniently removed to permit the rail line or tackle to be wound about the sheaves.
The invention further aims to provide a block and tackle having novel means whereby the strain imparted to the shaft or pin supporting the sheaves may be transmitted through the sheaves to a plurality of rollers carried by the block.
The invention still further aims to pro vide a block and tackle which is of highly impliiied construction, desirable in use and cheap to manufacture.

which receive locking devices 18 in the form of retaining keys, or the like.
With reference to Figs. 2 and 3, it will be noted that the lower portions of the plates 6, 7, 8 and 9 are provided with cars 20 which receive a transversely extending pin 21 hav' ing spacing collars 22 confined between the plates 6, 7, 8 and 9, so as to properly space the said plates.
A pair of connecting pins 24 are extended through the ears 20 of the several plates and are arranged on opposite sides of the connecting pin 21 in spaced parallel relation to the same. The connecting pins 24 which are arranged in spaced parallel relation to each other carry anti-friction rollers 26 which are engaged by the peripheries of the sheaves during the rotation of the latter, so that as the sheaves are rotated the strain transmitted through the same will be taken up by the connecting pins 2d. By this construction the weight being hoisted is prevented from imparting any undue strain to the shaft 16. lVith reference to Fig. 3, it will be observed that the anti-friction elements 26 and consequently the connecting pins 24 are arranged on opposite sides of the vertical center of the block so that, regardless of the direction of rotation of the several sheaves, the rollers will be in a position to support the sheaves in cooperation with the shaft 16.
The upper portions of the plates are also formed with apertured cars 30 through which is extended a detachable connecting pin 31. The pin 31 is provided at one end portion with transverse opening receiving a detachable locking device 32 which may, if desired, be in the form or a cotter pin. In addition to connecting the upper ends of the s; iced parallel plates, the detachable connerting pin 32 serves as a means for de tachably securing a shackle 84s to the several plates. As illustrated in Fig. 2, the shackle 23 i is formed with a plurality of alincd barrels having bushings 36 rotatably and detach-ably receiving the transverse connecting pin 31. The block may be attached to a suitable support by a clevis 38 pivotally connected to the shackle by a pivot bolt 41).
. In the use of the improved block a flexible hoisting clement l2 may be arranged about the several sheaves by merely detaching the shackle. lVith the shackle thus detached the flexible element 42 may be freely wound about the several sheaves without interference by the shackle or the pivot pin 31. The flexible element 42 is of course passed about the several sheaves after one end of the same has been connected to a 100 4:5 carried by one of the sleeves 22. As i lustrated in Fig. 1, a bracing strap 46 is disposed vertically on the outer sides of the plates 6 and 9 and is provided intermediate its ends with transverse openings which receive the end portions of the sheave supporting shaft 16. The end portions of the bracing straps 46 are formed with openings which receive the ains 31 and 21.
In lifting weig ted objects the fall or flexible element 42 may be positioned at any angle with relation to the line of pull and will not cause undue strain on the parts of the device. A second block 50 of any desired type may be employed in connection with the improved block 5 or if desired the block 50 may be similar in construction to the block 5.
With reference to the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawing it will be observed that a block constructed in accordance with this invention is pos sessed of great strength in proportion to its size and operates with a minimum of effort on the part of the operator.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred embodiment of the same and that such minor changes in construction and arrangement of parts may be made as will remain within the spirit of the. invention and the scope of what is claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A device of the class described comprising a plurality of spaced parallel plates, a connecting pin extending through the lower portions of said plates, spacing elements carried by said pin, anti-friction elements arranged on opposite sides of said spacing elements and confined between said plates, andsheaves rotatably arranged between said plates and engaging said anti-friction elements.
2. A device of the class described comprising a body, a sheave carried by the body, and a plurality of anti-friction elements engaging the periphery of said sheave.
3. A device of the class described comprising a plurality of spaced parallel plates, a shaft extending through the central portions of said plates, sheaves mounted on said shaft and arranged between said plates, a pair of spaced parallel pins extending through the lower portions of said plates on opposite sides of the vertical center of the same, and anti-friction elements carried by said spaced parallel pins and engaging the peripheries of said sheaves.

A device of the class described comprising a plurality of spaced parallel plates, a shaft extending through the central portions of said plates, a plurality of sheaves mounted on said shaft and confined between said plates, a pin extending through the lower portions of said plates, spacing ele ments carried by said pin and confined between said plates, a pair of spaced parallel pins arranged on opposite sides of said first named pin,anti-friction rollers carried by said pin and engaging the peripheries of said rollers, and a shackle detachably carriet by said plates.
