In the illustrative embodiment of the invention, the shaping of the marginal portion of the upper is effected by confining the margin between advancing and closing wipers and a flange forming block of permanent contour whose edge face extends at a definite angle to the tread face of the form and engage the inner side of the upstanding margin of the upper this block being mounted on and guided by the tread face of the form for movement bv the advancing wipers a predetermined distance longitudinally of the form, which distancemay correspond to the distance it is desired to locate the upstanding flange from the edge of the form. The contour of the flange forming block will correspond to the contour of the desired flange and successive advances of the end wipers will shape the margin of the upper to the edge face of the loloclr so that the flange will upstand from the tread face at the angle determined by the angular relation of the edge face of the block to the tread face of the form.
These and other features of the invention including a novel arrangement of end embracing and clamping mechanism, and improved constructions in wiper and wiper controlling mechanisms, will be more fully pointed out in the detailed specification following and are illustrated in the accom panying drawings.

As pointed out in said prior patents, the machine comprises a plurality of duplicate units built into one machine so that a plurality of shoe uppers may be in process at back and forth over the marginal portion of the same time. It will suilice to describe the present invention as applied to one of said units.

The machine is power driven, being controlled by a foot treadle 10 connected with a clutch 12 on a driving shaft 13. This shaft is geared to the cam shaft 14 which operates through a lever 15, a rod 16, and form carrier 18 to draw the fo H1 back into the mold; through a lever 20 and toggle 22 to close the moldfor clamping the upper about the side faces of the form; through certain novel connections later to be described to close the wiper controlling clutch and set the wipers to reciprocating; and through a lever 26, toggle 27, and rods 30, 32 and spring 33 to raise the form yieldingly against the wipers. These movements having been effected, the cam shaft l l comes automatically to rest While the wipers, which are driven continuously running pulley 35, are continued in reciprocation to shape the marginal portion of the upper to the margin or the tread face'of the form'2 and to form' upstanding marginal flange as later described, by repeated rubbing movements said tread face. The operator uses his judo:- ment as to the length of time during which. the work should be subjected to the action of the shaping instrumentalities and then again depresses the treadle 10. This results in the rotation of cam shaft 14 to cause opening of the wiper clutch and unjaclring of the shoe and restores all of the upper shapin instrumentalities to their starting positions, returning the inside form 2 to the position shown-in Fig. 1 preparatory to the removal of the shaped upper therefrom and the application of an unshaped upper to the form. The operating mechanism and organiza tion thus far described is like that more fully shown and described in said priorpatents and copending application, except noted, and the present invention, except as expressly stated hereinafter, is not concerned with the detailed construction thereof.
T o mold the marginal portion of the upper into an upstanding flange, the bottom face of the inside form 2 which corresponds to I the tread face of thelast or shoe, is recessed as shown in Fig. 2 to provide a slideway in whichthe base of a flange forming plate 341- is dovetailed and guided for movement longitudinally of the form and shoe end. This the plate has a permanent edge contour similar to the contour of the margin of the tread or bottom face of inside form 2 and conforming to the desired contour of the upstanding flange which is to be formed at the margin of the upper. The edge face of the plate errends at a definite angle, preferably substantially perpendicularly, to the plane of the bottom face of the form. This plate is formed with an elongated vertical slot 36 therein through which a stud 38 (Fig. 5) extends and threads into a bore 37 (Fig. 2) in the bottom face of the form. This stud in cooperation with the end wall of the slot limits and also determines the extent to which the block 362 may be moved lengthwise relatively to the edge of the form end by the advance of the end embracing wipers.
This flange forming plate, which also acts as margin holding means confining the upper against the edges of the wipers as they advance and close and restraining the marginal stoclr from doubling on itself to produce folds similarly to the deformable member of my copending application aforesaid, is maintained normally in rearwardly projected position in the slideway on form 2 with its end edge alined with or adjacent to the end edge of the form, according to adjustment, by means of the presser member 50 constituting the upper arm of'a bell crank lever fulcrumed in the form carrier 18 and having its lower and horizontal arm 52 pressed downwardly by a spring plunger (Fig. l). lVhen the carrier 18 with its inside Iorm 2 is drawn baclrwardly to draw the form back into the mold, the first advance of the wipers will move the flange plate 3 2 longitudinally of the form 2, swinging the bell crank lever 50, 52 and riding the reduced end of arm 52 up into the notch in a latch finger 6O vertically adjustable in a clamping block on spring pressed latch holding member pivotally mounted on an arm 63 which. is hung intermediate of its ends on a spindle carried ly the machine frame and held ag st an abutment at its lower end by a set screw engaging rib on the frame at its upper end. The linger 60 may be vertically adjusted to cohperate pronerly with the b ill or lr lever arm aecordi to the movementgiven said by the ad vance of the wipers, the extent of which movement may vary in different cases. This latch will engage and hold the bell crank lever until the carrier 18 is moved forwardly to unj aclr the shoe at the end of the shaping operation. The uuper end 50 of the lever cannot be swung back by the spring plunger 54, and the flange forming plate 3% will remain in the position to which it is moved by the first advance of the wipers, until the end 54 to return the flanging plate to its initial position.
Preferably, I employ a connection between the presser arm 50 of the bell crank lever and the flange forming plate which may be adj usted to vary the extent to which the plate is projected relatively to the end edge of the form at the beginning of the operation. Such a connection is shown in the set screw e -tering through a bore in the end of p e and cooperating with the presser b 56 and stud 38 adjustably to determine the initial position of the flange plate on the form and relatirely to its rear edge. By this adjustment, the flange plate may be made to project beyond the rear edge of the form to permit the upper to be pressed against it in such manner as to hold up the wings or ends of stifiener marial so that they may be molded nerly 0 er the tread face of the form ritli the upper by the wipers. When, in the operators judgment, the upper has been properly molded and flanged, the reciprocation of the wipers is discontinued and the shoe unjacked as previously described.
Preferably, the wipers are started in operation eoincidentl: with the closing of the outer mold on the form 2, and accordingly, in the illustrated machine, 1 have connected the end of the wiper-clutch controlling arm 66 with the outer mold closing toggle 22 by a second toggle 68 one of whose links carries a pin 69 which projects into a slot in the other link, the pin being engaged by the Y hooked end of one arm of a bell crank lever .70 normally held in engagement wlth sald the shapin operation to open the outer mold, the member 70 is returned to the position shown in Fig. 1.
The wiper mechanism herein shown, like the mechanism illustrated in said prior patents, comprises carrier plates 4- connected to pivot pins 7 on links 9 which extend forwardly from a cross-bar 11 on a wiper operating rod 17, the carrier plates having curved outer edges in bearing engagement with the walls of the recess in the wiper head in which the wipers are mounted. Rolls 55 on normally stationary studs 58 serve by engagement with the walls of slots 51 in the carrier plates to cause the plates to be swung inwardly and outwardly during the advancing and retracting movements imparted to them by their operating connections. In order to avoid the possibility of cistortion of the molded upper materials by tendency of the wipers to strip them from the form, it is oesirable to stop the operaion of the wipers prior to the forward reurn movement the inside form 2 and pleterably also prior to the flexing of the to ple 22 to open the outer mold and thus release the upper materials from molding pressure. In a machine for shaping an end portion of a shoe upper, an inside form, an outer mold for shaping the upper to the sides of the form, shaping wipers for bending the margin of the upper over the face of the form, means for relatively moving the mold and form to seat the form in the mold, operating means for closing the mold on th form to shape the upper, power operated mechanism for the shaping wipers including a clutch controlling member, and means to operatesaid member to start the wipers through operation of the mold closing means.

In a machine for shaping an upper over a shoe form, upper shaping means movable inwardly over the bottom face of said form in engagement with the outer surface of the margin of the upper to bend the margininwardly over said face, an upper flanging device movable inwardly with said upper shaping means in engagement with the inner surface of the margin of the upper, means for limiting the inward movement of said device to cause the inner portion of the margin of the upper to be shaped between said device and shaping means to produce a flange extending at an angle to the bottom face of the form, and means for preventing outward return movement of said device during return movement of said shaping means. 27. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a shoe form, of end embracing wipers movable to gather and svipe the margin of an upper inwardly over ,the bottom face of said form, a flanging device arranged to engage the inner surface of the margin of the upper and to be moved inwardly over the form by the pressure of the wipers, and means for limiting the inward movement of said device to cause the inner portion of the margin of the upper to be shaped between said device and the wipers to produce a flange extending at an angle to the bottom face of the form.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with inner and outer forming members relatively movable into operative relation to the end portion of the upper of a shoe, of end embracing wipers, power means for operating said wipers, and controlling means constructed and arranged to cause the operation of said wipers to be started by the relative movement of said forming members to operative position. 7

In a machine of the class described, a shoe end embracing band, means for closing said band about the end of a shoe, end embracing wipers, power means for operating said wipers, wiper controlling mechanism, and connections between said mechanism and the band, closing means to cause the wipers to be started in operation by the closing of the band. i
In a machine of the class described, the combination with shoe end embracing and clamping means, of a member movable end embracing wipers, power means includ-v ing a clutch for operating said wipers, and mechanism connected to said lengthwise movable member for actuating said clutch.

In a machine of the class described, the combination-with inner and outer forming members relatively movable into operative relation to the end portion of the upper of a shoe, of operating means for effecting relative movement of said members, end embracing wipers, power means for operating said wipers, means for starting the operation of the wipers by the relative movement of said members to operative position, and additional means constructed and arranged to stop the operation of the wipers independently of the relative reverse movement of said members.
85. In a machine of the class described, a shoe end embracing band, means for closing said band about the end of a shoe, end embracing wipers, power means including a.
clutch for operating said wipers, mechanism connected to said band closing means for actuating said clutch, and means for rendering said mechanism effective to stop the operation ofthe wipers independently of the openin of the band.
36. n a machine of the class descrlbed, shoe clamping means comprising wedge members pivoted respectively at opposite bers supported on the opposite sides of said clamping member, yielda le pressure applying means between said operating members and the clamping member, and means movable in wedging'engagement with said operating members to force them inwardly toward the shoe.

In a machine of theclass described, the combination with a shoe end embracing band, of pressure applying members pivoted respectively at opposite sides of said band, yieldable pressure applying means between said pressure applying members and the band, and means movable lengthwise of the shoe in wedging engagement with said membersto force them inwardly toward the shoe.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with a shoe end embracing band, of means for closing the band inwardly against the sides of the shoe including yieldable pressure applying devices at opposite sides of the band, and additional positive connections to the band for open-- ing it. i

In a machine of the class described, the combination with a shoe end embracing band, of wedge mechanism movable lengthwise of the shoe to force said band against the shoe, and additional means connected to the band and arranged to be operated by the reverse movement of said mechanism to open 7 the band. 7
41. In a machine ofthe class described,
the combination with a shoe end embracing I ner shaping means constructed to present a marginal face substantially parallel to the plane of the shoe bottom over which the margin of the upper isto be bent by said outer shaping means and a face transverse to said marginal face and extending around the end of the shoe from one side-to the other at a determinate distance from the outer edge of said marginal face for engagement with the upper materials tomold them into an upstanding flange adapted to be sewed to the rib of an insole.
43. In an upper shaping machine, the.
combination with end embracing wipers, of
a shoe end form over which the margin of the upper is to be gathered and bent inwardly by the wipers, and means on said form constructed to present an abutment face transverse to the plane of the wipers and extending around the end of the form at. a determinate distance from the outer edge of the form for engagement with the margin of the upper materials to mold them into an upstanding flange adapted to be sewed to the rib of an insole.
