Description

.z. POPIN.
HAIR TREATING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED MAYII, I919- 1,376,358. Patented Apr. 26,1921.
BY any ATTORNEY PA'IJENT OFFICE.
ZIVA POPIN', OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAIR-TREATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr 26, 1921.
Application filed my 17, 1919. Serial No. 297,7 7.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZIVA POPIN, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Treating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved device adapted to be used in what 18 known as permanent hair waving or curling, and the prime object of my invention is to provide a device which is adapted to carry a hair waving compound, such as borax, or other materials, employed in the hair waving process.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the above character, which is not only adapted to be used as a carrier for the hair treating substance, but which also will operate to protect those parts of the hair adjacent the heating apparatus from becoming injured or damaged by the heat generated by the electric current utilized in the heater.
Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts and applications of principles, constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein I have illustrated a preferred form of embodiment of my invention:
Figure l is a plan View thereof; and
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation.
Referring now to the drawing, wherein similar reference characters refer to similar parts in both figures, the reference numeral 1 denotes the base or body of the device, the same comprising a strip of fabric, such as gauze or cheesecloth, and if desired, this strip may be composed of several layers of the fabric sewed together in superimposed relation. The ends of the strip are preferably tapered slightly as shown at 2.
Mounted upon either side of the strip, and sewed thereto, are other strips of similar material 3 and 4c, said strips terminating short of the ends of the main strip, as
clearly shownin the drawing, so that the.
end parts 5 and 6 will be merely of the thickness of the strip 2.
The strips 3 and 4, if desired, may be likewise composed of a number of thin strips When the device has been formed in the manner shown, and described, it is dipped 1nto a solution of the hair treating substance, or into a paste, such as a paste composed of borax and water, and is manipulatedm said paste so that it will take up a suitable quantity thereof between the meshes of the fabric. When this has been done, it is allowed to dry so that a number of the devices may be packed and shipped in a dry condition, or stored in such condition for future use. i
In, using my improved device or appliance, it is merely necessary to dip it in water, thereby saturating the dry substance with which it is impregnated, and thereby rendering the device ready for use.
In the use of my device, it is wrapped about a strand or tuft of hair wound upon the curler, such as shown in my co-pending application Serial Number 297,765 whereby a tube and heater are positioned about the same so that the free ends 5 and 6 of the device are clamped about the hair near the roots, thereby protecting that part of the hair from the heat generated by the heater, such as disclosed in my co-pending application Serial Number 297,764,.
It will accordingly be seen that l have provided a device well adapted to attain, among others, all the ends and objects of my invention in an entirely efiicient manner, and whereby there is provided an easily transportable carrier for a 'hair treating substance that is always ready for instant use.
As many changes could be made in this construction without departing from the scope of the following claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above descri tion or. shown in the accom an in larly formed strips or Iabric which are sewed thereto, said secondstrips of fabric terminating short of the ends of the first named strips of fabric, said strips being -5 impregnated with a hair treating substance. 2. As a new article of manufacture, an elongated .strip of fabric having tapered end portions, and having superimposed similarly formed strips offabric sewed thereto 10 in superimposed relation, said second named strip of fabric terminating short of the ends of said first named strip, and said plurality of strips being impregnated with a hair treating substance.
.3. As a new article of manufacture, a plurality of elongated strips of fabric sewed together in superimposed relation, the ends of the strips being of less thickness than the intermediate portion, and a hair treating substance which forms a constituent part of said strips! In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
