Be it known that I, 'IHoisnisv J. JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Armrests, of which the following is a specification.
in object of the invention is to provide an arm rest for the use of riveters to permit of resting the arm so that the hand thereof can hold and guide the riveting machine particularly in connection with surface riveting as in the riveting of plates along the flat sides of a ship.
The invention comprehends among other features, an arm rest of a simple construction, which is adapted to be placed upon a suitable flat surface and which secures the arm of the riveter so that the hand of the arm can securely grip the riveting hammer or gun and form an effective and substantial support to guide the gun in the operation of the latter, thus relieving the arm from the weight and blows of the hammer, thereby enabling a riveter to accomplish morework, and more effectively hold the implement or riveting machine to effect its proper operation.
In the further disclosure of the invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the iews, and in which,

Fig. 4- is a vertical transverse sectional view through the base showing the pivotal arrangement between the base and the body of the arm rest.
Referring more particularly to the views the arm rest in its entirety is indicated by the numeral 10 and it consists substantially of a base 11 preferably having its under side serrated as at 12, said base including a vertical pivot 13 on which is swiveled a Semi-circularly shaped arm body 14, the inner face 15 of which is preferably padded as at 16. One end of the body 14 carries a hinge plate 17 on which is hinged a locking bar or strap 18, the other end of which is adapted to lie upon the other end of the arm body 14 and is provided with a depending hook like member 19 which is normally engaged by a locking plate 20 mounted in a cut out portion of said other end of the arm body 14 and including a stem 21 encircled by a spring 22, an operating button 23 on the exterior end of a stem 24 being arranged on the arm body'in the cut out portion and connected to the plate 20 -so that when pressure is applied to the button 23 the plate 2O will be slid out of engagement with the member 19, thus releasing the free en d of the strap 18 so that it can be swung into an open position.
.When the strap is open, the arm of the riveter indicated by the numeral 25, is disposed upon the pad 1G and the strap is then swung into locked position. The base 11 is now disposed upon the flat surface which is to be subjected to the riveting operation and the hand 36 of the arm 25 can nou7 grip the riveting gun or element 27 to effectively support the same in position in the riveting operation, thus bracing the implement in desired position and holding the arm steady by reason of the interposition ofthe arm rest' between the arm and the flat surface against which the base is disposed. The serrated surface 12 on the base is provided to prevent any slipping and it will be apparent that by having the arm body 14, mounted to turn on the base, the arm of the riveter can be readily swung into different positions, convenient to the proper operation of the riveting machine.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A riveters arm rest comprising a base, an arm body mounted to turn on the base, and a looking strap mounted to swing on the arm body for locking the arm of the riveter in the arm body.
2. A riveters arm rest comprising a base, an arm body mounted to turn on the base, a pad on the arm body for the arm of the riveter and means for locking the arm of the riveter in said arm body.
8. A riveters arm rest comprising a base, an arm body mounted thereon, a strap on the arm body for holding the arm of the riveter thereto and means for releasably locking said strap to said arm body.
