Be it known that I, SAMUEL C. VAUGHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlotte, in the county of Mecklenburg and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Exhibiting Devices, of which the following is a specification.

The primary object of my present invention is to produce a simple, cheap and effective means whereby a lid will be effectively held against the back of a box to sustain the box in a tilted position to exhibit the contents thereof as well as to permit of the ready removal of the contents.

A further object of the invention is to produce a simple device of this character wherein a gripping engagement will be obtained at two separate and distinct points between the back and the cover of a box.

Other objects and advantages will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 1 is a view of the blank from which my improvement is formed.

While I have illustrated, in Fig. 1- of the drawings, my improvement attached be tween the back and cover of a cigar box to sustain the box in tilted position, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to this precise application, as the improvement may be used with equal efiiciency upon boxes containing other merchandise.

As disclosed in Fig. 4 of the drawings my improvement is constructed from a single metal plate cut, stamped or otherwise formed to provide a central portion which I will term the body of the device and which is designated by the numeral 5. Extending lat erally from the opposite edges of the body are score lines 66 arranged in proper spaced relation to each other and one pair of th same being disposed diametrically opposite the other pair. The score lines are arranged centrally of oppositely extending tongues 7 and 8 respectively that form the clamping elements of the improvement. The tongues 7, it will be noted by reference to the drawings, are of a less length than the tongues 8. The tongues 7 are bentin Specification of Letters Patent.

the same direction upon the score lines 6 right angularly with respect to the body 5. The tongues 7, at the outer end thereof are bent inwardly upon themselves to provide lips 9. These inturned lips 9 add to the gripping engagement of the tongues between the back 10 and the hinged lid or cover 11 of a box 12 containing merchandise 13 to be displayed. The box 12, when the device is applied will be held in a tilted condition so that the contents thereof are disposed at an angle and are in a position to be clearly exhibited. In addition to this, the contents may be readily removed as will, it is thought, be understood. The body 5 may have imprinted thereon the cost price of the articles 13 in the box 12, as indicated by the numeral 14 in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

From the foregoing, it will be noted tha the device exerts a gripping engagement between the back 10 and the cover 11 of the box 12 at two separate and distinct points, while the body 5 being retained at an angle parallel to the box permits of the price mark 14 thereon being freely displayed. The elongated body permits of the outer portion thereof being used as a finger hold in arranging the device on the box or cover or in removing the same therefrom, the price mark 14: being imprinted on the inwardly projecting portion ofthe said body.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

1. A' means for holding the lid of a box against the back thereof to exhibit the contents of the box; comprisinga fiat body strip having a price mark imprinted adjacent one of the'edges thereof andits opposite edge designed to provide a finger hold, said body having central reduced lateral extensions, resilient tongues formed on the edges of said extensions, and depending therefrom to provide inner and outer cooperating pairs of gripping elements to the opposite sides of the body and for engaging the back and the cover of the box, and the inner pair of gripping elements having their free ends formed with lips that are projected toward the outer pair of said elements. r

2. A means for holding the lid of a box against the back thereof and for exhibiting the contents of the box as well as for displaying the price of each article in the box, comprising a flat strip of bendable material which is slitted longitudinally from points adjacent to the ends thereof, the said slits terminating away from the center of the strip, the central portion of the strip comprising a body on Which the price mark of the article is indicated, the portions outward of the body being bent at the terminals of the slits to provide pairs of cooperating gripping elements, and one of each pair of gripping elements having its end inturned toward the other coacting gripping element to provide a lip that is designed to engage the inner 1 0 face of the box When the gripping elements are ari'anged over the edge of the box and the cover thereof.
