PRINTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented A 26 192 Application filed June 23, 1919. Serial No. 306,028.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr S. DUNCAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and Devices, of which the following is a speci cation.
This invention relates to printing devices of that class which comprise a plurality of printing forms and an information card carried by a frame and adapted to be stored in accordance with a card index system or stacked in a pile, and run through an addressing or other printing machine for taking an impression from the form. These.
devices are used not only for printing addresses butthey are now made to print a great deal of additional information, parts of which are liable to change with more or less frequency.
The object of the invention is to provide a printing device which will provide for a greater number of changes in the form than has heretofore been possiblein such printing devices without involving a complete renewal of the entire form. And a further object of the invention is to arrange the sections of the form in a,
novel relation to each other and to secure these sections in the frame in such a manner that the insertion and removal thereof is facilitated.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment of the invention,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the printing device;
Fig. 2 is a back view of the device;
Fig. 3 is afront view of the frame with the printing plate sections removed;
Fig. 4 illustrates the printing plate sections;
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 aresectional views on the line 5-5, 6-6 and 7-7, respectively, of
Fig. 1.
The frame 8 is provided at its top with I a bead 9 and at its bottom with a head 10 on the front thereof and at each end with a spacing flange 11 on the back thereof. The frame may be provided with keepers 12, as
shown in my Patent No. 1,026,263, dated May 14, 1912, for example, for receiving and holding index or other tabs 13, or it maybe made perfectly plain if it is not desired to provide for tabs.
An information card 14 is arranged at the upper part of the front of the frame with its upper edge beneath the bead 9, its lower edge engaged with lips 15 and one corner engaged with corner lips 16. A lip 17 on the locking device 18 also engages the lower end of the card and the latter is re tamed in place against endwise movement by the end stop 19 and the corner lip 16. The card being flexible can be easily moved endwise over the end stop 19 into and out of its position in the frame.
A plate section 20 is held in place on the frame by the bead 10, the lips 21, 22, and the locking device 23, A short plate section 24 is held on the frame alongside of the section 20, by the bead 10, lip 21, lip 25 and locking device 26. The two sections 20 and 24 abut against each other and are held by the locking devices 23 and-26 against endwise movement. The section 20 is provided with a shoulder 21 (F ig.'4) to engage lip 21 and prevent endwise movement of the section 20 to the left in Fig. 1 whether or not the section 24 is in place. Lip 21 engages the upper adjacent corners of the sections 20 and 24 and is in alinement with lip 25 but slightly below lip 22.
A plate section 27 is located above the sections 20, 24' and rests at its ends on the lips 22 and 25 and engages the end lips 28, 29. This section is cut away at 27- (Fig. 4), to accommodate the lip 30 which is located in the plane of the upper edge of section 27.
-A plate section 31 is located between plate section 27 and information card 17 and engages at its ends lips 29 and 30 and is provided with spaced projections, 31 (Fig. 4) which engage lips 32. This section is held against endwise movement between lip 29 and locking device 18 which engages the shoulder 33 on the section.
The sections 20, 27, 31 are provided on their lower edges at andadjacent the ends thereof with projections 34 which leave long shallow recesses 35 therebetween. This con struction facilitates the insertion and removal of the plates. The plates 20 and 24 may be inserted or removed independently of each other and of the other plates. Secslid angularly out between lips 29 and 32,
at least until the right end of the plate is disengaged from li 28. It is not necessary to slide the plate 2 its entire length in this angular position, it being only required that the right end of the plate be disengaged from lip 28 for removal or that this right end be engaged beneath lip 28, its lower corner resting upon lip 22 and its upper corner arranged below lip 30 for insertion. Nor is it necessary to slide plate 31 its entire length endwise for insertion or removal; the recesses permit the plate to be laid on the frame with the proyections 31 alternating with lips 32, the intermediate projection lying above the locking device 18, so that a comparatively slight endwise movement-of the plate will shift it into proper position in engagement with the various lips.
My improved printing device with a plurality of sectional plates, as shown, is particularly useful for av list of names where changes are frequently taking place. For example, section 20 may be used for an address; section 24 for ledger page or other information; section 27 for the name and a record number; and section 31 for an amount in dollars and cents. If this frame is used by a life insurance company the section 31 may bear the remium amount which will change from time to time if dividends are credited thereon. In such case the plate 31 may be changed as required without necessitatin a renewal of any other plate section. Also if the address changes plate section 20 may be changed without necessitating a change of other sections. Thus the cost of maintaining an extensive list where changes are frequently occurring is very greatly reduced.
It will not be necessary to explain more at length particular instances in which the invention has been and may be conveniently and satisfactorily used, since it will be apparent to any one familiar with this class of work that names, addresses and information may be distributed on the several plates in different ways to suit difi'erent conditions.
The 'card is held against endwise movement by the angular lip 16 and by the stop 19 and it will be noted that each corner of the card is inclosed and protected to prevent it from turning'up and possibly becoming disengaged from the frame in use. The retaining devices for the section are, so disposed and, the sections are so constructed that the several sections composing the form- 2.
