Description
W. L. CLARK. STRAIGHTEDGE.
APPLICATION HLED DUI-29,1919.
1,375,649. Patented Apr. 19, 1921 cm. am
siren s" PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER LYMAN CLARK, OF BOONE, IOWA.
STBAIGI-ITEDGE.
1 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, WALTER L. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boone, in the county of Boone and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful lmproveinents in Straightedges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a straight edge and has for its primary object the construction of a straight edge in which certain parts are so arranged that the length of the straight edge may be increased or the leveling edge of the same spaced from the surface acted upon.
An object of the invention is the construction of a straight edge that will not be interfered with by projections or the ir regular portions of a surface acted upon.
A feature of my invention is the con struction and arrangement of the parts whereby certain elements can be extended in t vo directions with relation to each end of the straight edge.
With these and other objects in view the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein- Figure 1. is a side elevation of the straight edge.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the block extended.
3 is a sectional view of line 3-3 Fig. 2.
Again referring to the drawing illustrating one construction of my invention 1 designates a body of the straight edge having the usual hand hole 2. In this particular instance the end portions of the straight edge are adjustable and to accomplish this result I provide a pair of blocks 3 of a shape to form a continuation of the body. Each block has secured thereto, in any suitable manner, a U shaped member l having its limbs 5 and 6 slidably mounted in the slots 7 and forming the body 1. A thumb screw 8 is arranged to bind against the member and thereby hold the block 3 in adjusted position. By this arrangement I am able to increase the length of the straight edge so that the same may be accurately arranged in place when used for setting door jambs or similar work. Often in practice a small projection on the surface acted upon will Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr, 19, 1921 Application filed December 29, 1919.

engage the straight edge in such a manner that the same cannot be accurately arranged 1n place and to overcome this disadvantage l have illustrated a plunger 9 slidably mounted in each block so that when arranged in projected position it will space the body of the straight edge from the surface acted upon so that the irregular surface can be si hted relative to the straight edge of the body. For the purpose of hold mg each plunger in its active or its inactive position I provide a leaf spring 10 secured to the block and having attached thereto a pin 11 to move in the block so as to engage eithgr of a pair of openings 12 in the plunger It is, of course to be understood that the invention may be constructed in various other manners and the parts associated in other relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is- 1. A. straight edge comprising a body, a block for each end of the body, a member slidably connecting each member of the block with the body, a thumb screw for locking the block in adjusted position, and a plunger adjustably mounted in eachblock for movement in a direction opposite from the movement of the block.
2. A straight edge comprising a body, a block, a U shaped member secured to the block and having its limbs slidably mounted in the body, a thumb screw for binding action on the member, a plunger slidably mounted in the block, and a spring actuated catch for holding the plunger in adjusted positions.
3. A straight edge comprising a body having parallel slots arranged in each end thereof, a U shape member having its limbs movably mounted in the slots in one end of the body, a thumb nut for clamping the limbs in the slot, a block secured to said WALTER LYMAN CLARK.
