Description

' R. K. CHUTE.
LADDER CLAMP, APPLICATION FILED OCT. 27, 1919.
Patented Apr. 5, 1921.
UNITED STAT LADDER-CLAMP.
Application filed October 27, 1919.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RAINsrORD K. CHUTE, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Everett, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in LadderClan1ps, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to ladder attachments and has for its object the provision of a device engageable upon one side of a ladder and engageable with the gutter at the edge of a roof whereby to hold the ladder against slipping. 7
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which clampingly en 'ages both the ladder and gutter and which is extremely simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly efficient and durable in use, and a general improvement in the art. IV 1th the above and other ob ects and ad-' vantages in View, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a ladder leaning against a gutter and showing my device in position,
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my device detached.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates the roof of a building at the edge of which is provided the usual gutter B, and O designates a ladder leaning against the gutter.
In carrying out my invention I provide a clamping member formed from a single length of material such as steel rod of suit able gage which is bent intermediate its ends into U-shape, as clearly shown, to provide arms 10 engageable against the sides of one side rail of the ladder. The ends of these arms are connected at one end by t ig Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr.5,19211. Serial No. 333,718.
portion 11 through which is threaded a rod 12 having a handle 13 and carrying a swiveled head 14 provided with prongs 15. The other ends of the arms 10 are bent downwardly at right angles, as shown at 16, to provide end portions 17 terminating at their lower ends in forwardly directed tines 18.
In the use of the device my clamping member is disposed upon one side'rail of the ladder with the arms 10 straddlingly engaging the rail and the portions 17 are engaged over the gutter B. The operator then grasps the handle 18 and rotates the screw 12 to bring the head 14 into engagement with the front of the ladder rail whereupon forward movement of the screw causes the tines 18 to grip securely against the gutter.
By this means it will be seen that the lad der will be held firmly associated with the gutter so that slipping of the ladder will be positively prevented.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it
ing down turned ends disposable within a gutter and terminating in penetrating prongs, a screw threaded through the bight portion of the bracket and having head whereby it may be turned, and a plate swiveled upon the other end of the screw and provided with tines adapted for penetrating engagement with the ladder.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
RAINSFORD K. OHUTE.
