Description

C. G. COPE.
AUXILIARY GRIP'PER.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 2, 1920.
Patented Apr. 5, 1921.
baa 611 1501:
CHARLES G. COPE, 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO MILLER SAW- TRIMHIER COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
AUXILIARY GRIPPER.
, Specification of'Letters Patent.
Application filed February 2, 1920. Serial No. 355,550.
1 '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES Gr. Corn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Auxiliary Grippers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to auxiliary grippers for use in connection with the main grippers of platen printing presses and has as one of its objects the provision of an auxiliary gripper which may be conveniently used in connection with a main gripper the edges of which taper toward each other. It is another object of my invention to provide an auxiliary gripper for use in connec-' tion with a tapered main gripper, which cooperates with the tapered side of such main gripper and may be adjusted from that side. It is another object of my invention to provide an auxiliary gripper which can be easily moved lengthwise of the main gripper for adjustment purposes, and which can be locked firmly and securely in its adjusted position. Other objects of my invention will appear from the following specification and claims.
By way of example, I have described one embodiment of my invention in the following specification, and shown such embodiment in the accompanying drawing, 1n which:
Figure 1 isa plan of a printing press platen having its main grippers provided with auxiliary grippers constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan of a platen gripper having an auxiliary gripper constructed in accordance with my invention mounted thereon; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, the locking lever being shown as moved toward its released position.
Referringto the drawing.'8 designates a platen havinga rocking gripper bar 9 whichcarries platen grippers 10. These platen grippers are of a common form, and each has an edge 11 at right angles to the axis on which it pivots and an edge 12 tapering toward the edge 11. In carrying my invention into effect I cut away a portion of the top surface of the gripper 10, adjacent the straight edge 11, so as to produce an undercut wall 13 parallel with the tapered edge 12.
My auxiliary gripper comprises a plate portion 14: for flat engagement with the bottom face of the main gripper and having extending therefrom, in such manner as to project at right angles from the edge 11, a gripper finger 15. The plate portion 14- is bent up, at its side remote from the finger 15, to form awall 16 for engagement with the tapered wall 12, and is then bent forward to form flap 17 lying on top of the main gripper 10. The fiap 17 is formed with an elongated slot 18 running lengthwise thereof, whereby itis given a slight transverse resiliency. Pivotally mounted in the end of the flap 17 is an eccentric disk 19 having an actuating lever 20 projecting therefrom, the disk engaging the wall 13 and being beveled to correspond with the undercut surface thereof.
In use, the device is slipped over the main gripper with the lever 20 in the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1; The device can easily be slid up or down the main gripper until precisely in the correctposition for the particular job to be printed.
When thus properly placed the lever 20 is.
pushed into the position shown in Fig. 2, thereby causing the eccentric disk 19 to en gage forcibly against the wall 13 and draw the wall 16 firmly against the edge 12, thus locking the device in the adjusted position.
I The slight transverse resiliency which the flap 17 has, due to the provision of the slot 18, permits of a firm holding and'compensates for any small unevenness which may be present in the wall 13. The under out ting of the wall 13, and the engagementof such wall 18, by the correspondingly shaped edge of the disk 19, prevents the flap 17 y from rising with respect to'the wall 13.
It will be noted that when the locking lever 20 is released the device can be slipped easily up or down the main gripper, thus making quick and accurate adjustment possible, while when the locking lever is made fast the device is securely held against 'movement. The fact that the device locks against the edge 12 of the main gripper remote from the sheet to be gripped facilitates accurate placing, as the operators fingers do not obstruct the View of the sheet.
I claim- 1. The combination with a platen gripper having opposed Walls, of an auxiliary gripper having a portion cooperating with one of said walls and including eccentric looking means cooperating with the other wall, and resilient means connecting said" portion with said locking means.
2. The combination With a platen gripper having an edge wall and a wall parallel with said edge "Wall, of an auxiliary gripper having a portion cooperating with one of said Walls and including eccentric locking means cooperating With the other Wall, and resilient means connecting said portion with said locking means.
