Description

(11F. MINNIS. ATTACHING CLIP FOR WINDOW WASHERS HARNESS.
APPLICATION FILED NOV-28,1919.
Patented Mar. 29, 1921.
UNITED STAEUEENT OFFICE.
GEORGE F. MINNIS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ATTACHING-CLIP FOR- WINDUW-WASIHERS HARNESS.
To (alt (U/1091b it may concern lie it known that l, ('lnonon l Mrnnis, a citizen or the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State oi lllinois, have invented certain new and useiiul improvements in Attaching-Clips tor ll indow-ll ashers Harness, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in attaching clips iior window washers har ness.
One oi the objects oi the invention is to provide a positive latch maintained closed by tension on the supporting rope, so that the clip annot be made to leave the relatively stationary supporting lug so long as the rope is tensioned by the weight of the worlnnan using the harness.
Other, further and more specific objects of the invention will be readily apparent, to persons skilled in the art, from the consid eration of the following description when talren in conjunction with the drawing wherein Figure l is a plan view oi the clip.
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof talten on line 22 of Fig. 1.
111 all the views the same reference characters are employed to indicate the similar parts.
l-leretolore clips, similar in outline, with outlines of the device herein illustrated, have been in general use but such clips have coir tained springoperated latches to retain the clip on the relatively stationary supporting lug. Such devices are unreliable and dangerous, because in the event that the spring should break, the slightest slack oi the rope will permit the clip to leave the supporting lug and endanger the life of the workman.
in the improved device the latch cannot become disengagedso long as the supporting rope is taut and furthermore the loop in the rope must be laterally enlarged, by direct prcssure'on the latch lever in order to move the latch out of the path of the lug.
5 is the clip and 6 is the relatively stationarv lug secured to a wall 7 ot a building; for supporting the clip.
The clip is provided. with a slot 8 into which the shank 9 ol the lug passes. The head 10 of the lug is sulliciently wide to bridge the slot so that the clip may not be removed from the lug unless the shank:
Specification of Letters Patent. Pai -g ued "d1 29 1 Q21 A i f Application filed November 28, 1919.
Serial No. 341,273.
thereof passes throngh the slot, in the same manner 111 which the clip was placed on the lug.
The clip is provided with an extended end 11, having a perforation 12 through which to pass a ropel o. A. latch member 1a is pivoted at 15 and is provided. with a short end 16 to close the slot 8. The latch also has an extended end 17 through which the rope Iltl is passed. 'l. he lower boundary 19, of the opening or orifice, below the lower boundary 20 of the orifice 12, so that the greatest part of the weight imposed upon the rope will come on the larger part 20. The device as indicated in Fig. 2 in full lines shows the latch closed, because the loop 21 is laterallv contracted and makes contact with the parts 19 and 20 ot' the device, and holds these parts together thus maintaining the shorter end 16, of the latch, in contact with the boundary wall oi? the slot 8, of the clip. To remove the clip from the lug 6, it is necessarv to laterally elongate the loop 21, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, so that the end 17 may be moved laterally a sul'licient distance to raise the latch end 16, to permit the head 10 oi the lug to pass through the slot. The end 19 of the latch projects below the end 20 so that the thumb of the operator may be placed against the end 19 to push it into position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 in order to release the clip from the supportin lug. A
Flo long as the loop 21 oi the rope 13 is laterally contracted, as shown in Fig. 2, the parts 19 and 20 cannot be separated and therefore the latch will remain closed. After the rope has become slack. as when it is released of the weight oi the workman normally imposed thereon then the latch may be opened and the clip removed from its support, otherwise the clip is inseparae blv engaged with said support.
TVhile I have herein shown a single cmbodirncnt of my invention for the purpose of a clear disclosure, it will be manifest to persons skilled in the art that changes may be made in the general arrangement and configuration of the parts within the scope of the appended claims.
It is manifest that the loop or link 21 can be of metal and the rope connected thereto instead of being threaded directly through the openings 12 and 18 the provision of an elongated loop or link in either case serving to lock and unlock the clip.
Having described the invention what I claim is:
1. In combination With a window washers harness having a supporting rope and a headed lug by which the harness is to be supported; a clip having a slot to receive the shank of the lug and an extended perforated end to receive a loop of a rope; a latch pivoted to said clip having an extended perforated end through which the rope is to also be passed and a member to bridge the slot when the two perforated ends are brought together by tension of the rope.
2. In comblnation wlth the clip for a window washers harness; a latch pivoted to said clip, to close the slot thereof and means operable by tension of the rope to close the latch.
3. In combination with a clip for a window washers harness; a latch, pivoted to said clip to close the slot thereof and having an extended end of said latch for engagement with a rope to maintain the slot closed when the rope is taut.
l. A.- clip of the character described having a latch to lock it to a supporting stud, said latch provided with an extended end. operable by a rope when the rope is taut, to hold the latch closed and rotatable, when the rope is slack, to open the latch.
In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name.
GEORGE F. MTNNIS.
