MECHANICAL TIME-FUSE.
Application filed. November 19, 1920. Serial No. 425,101.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEINRICH THmL,
residing at Ruhla, Germany, a citizen of the German Republic, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mechanical Time-Fuses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to mechanical time fuses, in which the percussion pin which is rotatable on its axis is supported in inoperative position by means of a cam attached to itand a fixed support in contact with said cam. In time fuses of this type used heretofore usually a releasing shaft journaled at 1 both ends was interposed between the percussion pin and the arm which releases the percussion pin, when operated by the time element of the fuse. This arrangement has the disadvantage that this releasing shaft is easily bent owing to the enormous forces which come into, action during the firing of the projectile resulting in the jamming of the shaft in its bearings so that this releasing shaft does not properly function when the time comes to bring the percussion pin into action. The subject matter of the present invention refers to a mechanical time fuse of this type in which this disadvantage is avoided and in which the releasing mechanism is materially simplified.
In the accompanying drawings, an example of my invention is illustrated. In these drawings:
Figure 1 is a transverse section of the elements in question of the time fuse on the line AB in Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 shows the elements of this mechanism in longitudinal, vertical section;
Fig. 3 shows a transverse section similar to that shown in Fig. 1 with the elements in the position after the percussion pin has operated.
Fig. 4 shows a rear view of the lower portion of the fuse shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 shows a similar view of the elements shown in Fig. 4 after the percussion pin has operated.
The percussion pin 1, rotatable on its lon- 'gitudinal axis as shown and actuated by spring 2, is provided with a cam 3 provided with an inclined face 4 which rests upon the cone-shaped top 7 of a pin. 5 rigidly supported on the casing plate 6 of the fuse.
Specification of Letters Patent. I Patent d M 22 1921' (STATE PArNr or Y-Ei The upper portion of percussion pin is I squared as shown at 8 and this end of the pin is located in the releasing arm 9 such that it can longitudinally slide therein but lspreventedfrom rotation except through the rotation ofarm 9. Arm 9 may be held 1n the position in which cam 3 rests upon pm 5 by any well known timing mechanism employed in such devices so that percussion pin 1 is prevented from rotation until the time element brings aboutthe release of arm 9. In order to'secure the time fuse against premature action, for instance during the transport, of the projectile, percussion pin 1 is secured against longitudinal motion toward the percussion'cap by means of a look f 11, rotatable on pin 12 and actuated to release the pin by means of centrifugal force. This,
I claim- 1. In a mechanical time fuse, a percussion pin adapted to rotate on its axis and to'slide in the direction thereof, a cam on said pin, a fixed support contacting'with and thereby supporting said pin, an operating arm idirectly connected to said pin, said operating arm adapted to rotate said pin to release 1 said cam from itssupport, the connection between said pin andsaid arm permitting. said pin to move relatlvely to said arm in a longitudinal direction after the release has occurred.
. j M 2. In a mechanical time fuse, a percussion an operating arm directly connected'to said pin and adapted to rotate it to release said cam from its support, the connection betvyeen said pin and saidarm permitting said pin to move'relatlvely to said arm'inv a lon- 10 gitudinal direction after the release has occurred.
HEINRICH THIEL. In presence of- EMIL DijRER,
AUGUST HARTMANN.
