:BEAM on DRUM.
To all/waaruit may concern. 1
it known that I, Bonner W. CoRNwALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, inthe county of Uuyahoga and State of Uliio, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements inf Beams or Drums, of which the following is a specification.
rJl`his invention relates to beainsor drums for receiving webs of material andparticu larly to that class of such devices utilized for supporting fabrics used in the manufacture of tires. i
ln the manufacture of tires a vast quantity of fabric is utilized. Some `of this :tab-` i'ic is substantially seventy-two inches in width and is wound upon a beam or drum which is placed in a suitable apparatus provided with a square shaft for receiving this beam or drum. Inthis apparatus there is a drag created by the mechanism `which causes the inner convolution of fabric to.
hug the shell or periphery of the beam or drum and through friction to tend to produce suoli a torque on this shell with respect te its inner mechanism and the square shaft thatin many instances the rivets employed in the usual form of beam or drum are shear-ed. ln other words, in the ordinary construction there is a tendency at all times lorthe shell to shear off itsconnections with the inner structure and this tendency is so great when rivets are used that they are actually sheared. rlhis is overcome in the present device by emplofying an inner structure ot a type such that the shearing torque of the shell is borne by an inwardly turned flange which has ample bearing against the" heads and webs of the inner structure and thereby relieves the rivets.
The invention will more `fully and at large appear in thefliollowing description, drawings and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a foreshortened view partly in elevation and partly in section showing the beam or y drum; F Q; is an end elevation; and Fig.
3 is a section upon the line 3--3, oi Fig; l.
rllhe beam is made up of two heads identical in form, intermediate webs, an. Aouter `shell and an inner shell, the heads being identical in form and the webs being iden- 4 tical in form so that a description of one of the heads and one of the webs willsuliice for both in each case.
The inner shell or huh of the beam or y speciaeation of remettrait-em." Y patent-@d ati-Lr; g2, Application ledll'vlarch l?, `19M;` ,Serial No. 283,122. i
` drum lcomprises a pair of right angle inembers .l "and El, each having along its edges flanges 3 which are adapted infthe assembled arrangement to engage back to bach as shown in Q ,and 3. The beam ordrum is provided with a pair of heads each consisting of a main head portion d having an oaitwardly extending peripheral flange 5 shown in dotted lines, Fig. l. This flange and a portion of the main head portion el are provided with` diametrieally opposed inwardly extending slots @for a purpose to be described. The main head portionl is provided with a hub portion 7 h aving a square opening 8 therein as clearly shown in Fig. Qfllior the reception of the inner shell or tubular hub comprising the members l and 9;. Suitable slots 9` are provided atopposed `corners of the square `iopenings in. `this maiirhead portion 4 to receive the `flanges 3 as clearly shown in said figure. ln order to hold the `inner shell or 'tubular hubin place between the heads, each oli `the latter is provided with aniiiwardly extending flange l0 as' shown in fig.` l. Flach head fhub portion `is fluii'thor provided with aconical extension ll `er;tending inwardly and provided with` a cylindrical fiange` .l/J shown in dotted lines in Fig. l. This conical extension and the flanges `l?, are `provided with slots ll alining with `the slots 6" in thefflange 115. These flanges engage the inner periphery of the shell as will appear. l
Engagingig` the flanges 5 and 12 of both of' the heads is the shell consisting oftwo siinilarnieinbers each comprising a semicircular portion 13 having an inwardly entending fiange lll at each edge for engagement in the slots Gand ll, the walls of said slots l'orrning substantially radial shoulders and inwardly through the web so as to receive the shell flanges la. The semi-circular shell portions are held place With respect to the heads and intermediate webs b y suitableY rivets vplaced at convenient points and extending through the several parts.
industry.' The fabric is drawn from the drum from time to time and the strain or Y draO exerted u son theshaft to )revent rceling olf and to hold the fabric taut, creates a great strain upon the connections between the shelland the inner structure.l this strain being transmitted in the present structure through the flanges of the shell t0 the heads and intermediate Webs and to the shaft.
Having described my invention, claim: l. A beam or drum, Ycomprising an inner member ,having substantially radial abutments for transmitting` torque, an Outer shell member, and integral shell portions coperating with said abutments for transmit- Vting they torque of one of said members to the other. y
2;l In a beam or drum, aninner'hub structure, heads carriedV thereby and having` substantially radial shoulders Vfori'ninp,- Vabut- Y ments,.and an outer shell having` integral `portions"engaging said shoulders whereby the Vtorque of the shell is transmitted to the heads. Y
Y 3. Ina beam or drum, suitable heads, radially. disposed shoulders'nearthe periphery of said heads, and an outer .shell haring inwardly extendingr flanges engaging' said shoulders.
et. ln a beam or drum, suitable heads each having` a radially disposed slot, and a shell having inwardlyY extending flanges engagingr in said slots.
ln a beam or drum, suitable heads therefor each having` a pluralit)Y et radially disposed slots extentlingout through the wher-y, and :shell members ear-h haring idinal flanges nesting` in said slels.
' 6. In a beam or drum, a head having; a e5'- lindrical Piange hariireY radial slots extending through the llanee and into the head, and shell members havingY anges nesting in said slots.
7. D a beam or drum, a pair of heads earl comprising` a main head portion haringa centrally disposed rectangular opening with radially extending opposed slots, a peripheral cylindrical flange with inwardly. egatein L iner slots, a ,guide eene extending from said main head portion and havin;- a peripheral je with inn'ardl)v extending sl-:as in alinement with the slots of the main head porti l, an inner hub shell comprising ingular portions haring' nesting flanges engaging;- into the radially disposed slots at the center of the main hub portion, senii-eircular shell members secured to the heads and ha vine flanges extendingy into the outer peripheral slots of the head mernliers intermediate nelis betveen the heads comprisingdiaphragme* having suitable openings fitting and receivingl the inner hub shell and slots for reerixing the flanges of the shell, and means 'for holding the heads and Webs against endrsise movement with respect to the shell.
In testimony whereof l alilx mi' signature.
