Description

Joni: B. nusKosKI, or NEWIBERIA, Lou siana.
IBLOW-0FF COCK.
specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar.22, 1921.
Ajplication 'filed October 22, 1918. Serial No. 259,199.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN B.'RUSKOSKI, a
citizen of the United States, residing at New Iberia, in the parish of Iberia and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blow-Off Cocks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanyingj drawings.
his invention relates to improvements in blow-off cocks, and has for its primary object to provide improved operating means for the blow-off cock of the boiler of a locomotive so that it may be easily operated at any time by the engineer from his cab.
t is another and more particular object of my invention to provide simple andpositively operating means for opening the blow-oil cock which may be advantageously employed at any frightening live stock who have invaded the right of way and thereby to a large extent obviate the destruction of such stock.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved construction, combination and relative arrangement of the various elements as will be hereinafter more fully described, subsequently claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating one embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the blow-01f cock open; and
Fig. 3 is a top plan view. 1
Referring in detail to the drawing, B designates the blow off cock of a locomotive boiler and R the running board which is usually provided upon the sideof the boiler.
Upon the edge of the running board, a U-shaped guide bracket 5 is fixed at its ends. A bell crank lever (Sis fulcrumed, as at 7 upon a suitable bracket secured to the running board R, and one arm of this lever extends upwardly through the guide 5. To this lever arm, a rod 8 is connected at one of its ends, the other end of said rod being pivotall connected to the operating lever 9 mounte upon a suitable rack or quadrant 10 arranged in the engineers cab. The other arm of the bell crank lever 6 is 0011 time for the purpose of nected by means of a rod 11 to the movable valve member of the blow-off cock B.
When it is desired to open the blow-off cook, the engineer operates the lever 9 which, in turn, through the medium of the rod 8., rocks the lever 6 upon its fulcrum, thereby lifting upon the rod 11 and raising the valve member from its seat. Thus, steam under pressure is blown off and the noise of the escaping steam will frighten or attract the attention of live stock who may have trespassed upon the track so that they will leave the track and escape destruction by the advancing train. This position of the several parts of the device is illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing, and it is to be noted that the arm of the bell crank lever 6 striking one end of the guide bracket 5, limits the opening movement of the blow-olf cock so that the possibility of entirely pulling off the valve or breaking of the parts is obviated.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection wlth the accompanying drawing,
it is believed that the construction, manner of operation and'several advantages of the device will be clearly and fully understood. The invention is simple, exceedingly durable and highly efficient and reliable for the purpose in view. It is a well known fact that great numbers of cattle are annually destroyed by trains. As, by means of the present invention, the blow-oif cock can be operated at any time without necessitating that the engineer shall leave his cab, an effective warning may be given in sufficient time to allow the cattle to effect their escape. Thus, the destruction of live stock, which results in numerous claims against the railroads, can, to an appreciable degree, be avoided by means of the present invention.
While I have herein shown and described the preferred construction and relative arrangement of the various parts of the device, it is nevertheless to be understood that the same are susceptible of considerable modification and I, accordingly, reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim In combination with the running board of a locomotive and a blow-off cock positioned there'below, a bell crank lever pivotally supported by the running board for movement in a vertical plane, an arm of said lever being upwardly directed, a rod operatively connecting the second arm of the lever and the movable valve element of the blow-off cock, means coaeting with the first-named arm of the bell crank lever for moving the lever to open the blovv-oif cock, and a guide bracket secured to the running board and 10 J. W. Moneo'r, W. H. REYNAUI).
