Description

M, w. REES-E1 so'FT COLLAR FA-STENER. APPLICATION HLED SEPT530, 1 920.
Patented Mar. 15, 1921.
A TTOR/VEVS WITNESSES UNITED sTATEs PA rewrote-1c MERL -w. REESE, on NEW YORK, 'YJ
- SOFT-LGOLLAR FASTENER.
T 0 all whom it may concern i Be it known that I, MERL 'Rnnsn, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of the city of New York, .borough ofManhattan, in the county and Stateoff New York have invented a new and Improved Softe} Collar Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to collar fastening devices and has particular relation to an improvement in clamps for engagement with the meeting edges of the outer fold of a soft collar whereby said edges are secured together after the tie has been applied.
Devices of this character now in general use and on the market, are made either of a rigid bar provided with clamping means at its opposite ends or comprise independent clamping elements linked together. The latter linked fasteners are the most desirable because they afford means which allows the device to'conform more snugly to the collar and at the same time permit of a certain amount of play. Heretofore no provision has been made in the construction of these devices to prevent relative twisting of the clamping elements which twisting results in untold efiort and loss of time in applying the device'to the collar.
It is therefore the principal object of this invention to improve the linked formof fastening device, by constructing the same in such a manner and from material of a suitable cross sectional configuration to pre vent relative twisting of the clamps whereby to minimize the amount of time and effort required in the application of the fastener to a collar.
A further object of'the invention is to provide a device of the character described which is so constructed as to render the same foldable into a small compact article which reduces the amount of space necessary for its storage to a minimum.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described, which affords a stronger grip and presents a neater appearance when applied but which does .not materially add to the expense of manufacture.
With the above recited and other objects in view, some of which will appear hereafter, reference is had to the following specification, the appended and the acco-mpanying drawingsin'which; V a
Figure l is a front elevation illustrating the fastening device in applied position on acollar.
. ig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the fastening device diagrammatically ,illustrat ingits position on a collar.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation thereof.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the device in folded condition. 7.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 10 and 11 designate a pair of identically formed clamping elements, each of which is constructed from a single length.
of material of rectangular configuration in cross section. The clamps are formed by bending the material upon itself in substantially S-form to provide the entering mouth 12 and the collar edgereceiving loop 13.
The inner extremities .of the material are.
bent to form the eyes 14 and an oblong connecting link 15 respectively receives the eyes 14, the said link being also constructed of material of rectangular configuration in cross section providing means to prevent relative twisting of the clamping elements whereby the entering mouth 12 of each clamping element is maintained in proper position to admit of the ready application of the device to the collar. In applying the device to a collar one of the clamping elementsis first applied to one of the meeting edges of the outer fold of the collar by forcing the loop 13 over the same through the Specification of Letters Patent, 7 Patented u ,5, 71 921. entering mouth 12. The cross sectional configuration of thematerial from which the clamps and the connecting link 15 are formed, will prevent relative twisting of the same and will constitute a means to maintain the entering mouth 12 of the unconnected clamping element in proper alinement to receive the other meeting edge of the'outer fold of the collar thus minimizing the amount of time required in properly positioning the entering mouth and the effort and difficulty ordinarily experienced where the clamping element is constructed otherdevice will occupy a minimum amount of space and require a small contalner for 1ts reception. When the device is in applled position with the link 15 disposed behind the knot of a tie, the same-will give the impression and same neat appearance as a rigid bar but will afford means to allowthe device to conform to and snugly fit the 001- merely illustrative of one practical exampleor form in which the invention maybe reduced to practice and the rlght 1s reserved to embodiments other than those specifically shown in so far as the variations fall within the scope of the general meaning of the terms in which the claim is expressed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by'Letters Patent:
A collar fastening device comprising clamping elements constructed respectively of a single piece of material of rectangular configuration in cross section bent upon itself to provide collar receiving loops having entering mouths and formed at their inner ends with eyes, an elongated link 0011- structed of a material of a similar configuration in cross section respectively received by said eyes to afford means topermit of relative swinging of the clamps but serving to prevent relative twisting of the I same whereby to maintain the entering months in proper relation to receive the wings of a collar. a I MERL W.
