Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EnwAn-n Laws, citizen of the United States, and resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State or Ohio, have invented certain new and use- 1 i111 Improvements in Devices for Attaching Name Plates and the like, of which the following 1s a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the drawings.

My invention relates to devices for attaching name plates to automobile radiator hoods and the like.
There are numerous devices adopted in on a boss plate at the back of the name plate 7 of a sharp or rough metal edge, which when forced over an annular flange on the radiator shell will tightly and permanently grip the said flange, until some distortion of the metal of the shell serves to permit a disengagement. I
As in previous devices the object of my invention is to provide a cheap and strong method of attaching a name plate on a sheet metal structure, in a single motion, and with large chances of permanency while in use.
This object I accomplish by that certain construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically pointed out and claimed. 7

It will be understood that while the chief mode or" use of my invention will be in the securing of name plates on automobile radiator shells, that I do not limit the application thereof to this one use, and use the terms-relative to such use as merely exemplary terms,- inclusive of all analogous uses and structures.
I provide in connection with a name plate 1, same bearing suitable insignia, or the like, a conical boss plate 52, mounted fixedly thereon. The metal at the annular crest of. this conical boss is bent inwardly at an inward angle to the axis of the cone, as at 3 to form a biting edge, to be used in effecting the necessary grasp in mounting the plate.
The sheet metal piece 4-, in this instance a radiator shell to. which the plate is to be attached, is formed up witha conical depression 5, to match the conical boss or ring, on the rear of the name plate, and the metal at the crest of the depression, is bent outwardly to form an annular flange 6, same being of a size to engage in the hole in the boss.
Inattaching the name plate, the hole in the boss is set over the flange at the base of the radiator shell depression and the plate forced in. This will cause the edge 3 of the boss to engage over and slide down the flange, to the base of the shell depression, and this said edge, being a close fit, will compress the flange to the extent necessary for it to slide home, and will thereupon grasp the same, so as to be practically irremovable without distortion of the flange or the boss.
It may be observed that this mounting device does not have to rely upon spring provide a member to force within a plain round hole formed in a radiator shell since in such a case a slight oversize on the part of the member forced into such hole would be likely to distort, weaken or split the metal exposing non-enameled edges to rust action, breaking the enamel, permitting the name plate to rattle, and like defects which are obvious.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device for attaching a name plate or the like to a metallic shell, the combination with a shell having a hole therein, a wall extending toward the plate from said hole, of a name plate or the like, and a mem her on the rear of the name plate adapted to engage the metal walls about said hole on the outside thereof by a tight metallic fit, said member having a metallic edge forced against the walls about said hole, for the purpose described.
In a device of the character described 3.
