IMPROVEMENT IN MEANS FOR PROPELLING BOATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l37,1$4 dated March 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. ANDERsoN, of Flintville, in the county of Brown and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Propelling Boats 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making apart of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

This invention has relation to that class of boa-ts the propulsion of which is effected by action upon water entering tubes located in the bottom of and arranged lengthwise of the boat and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of certain steam apparatus designed to produce a direct action of steam upon the water, resulting in the propulsion of the boat,substantiall y as hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawing, A designates the hull of a boat, in the stern of which is located a steam-boiler or pair of steam-boilers, B. In the bottom of the boat are arranged two sets of tubes, D D, running lengthwise of the boat, one set opening at the stern and the other at the bow of the boat. The ends of the respective sets terminate in the middle of the boat at a suitable distance from each other. At its end each tube is provided with an upright reservoir, steam-chest, or cylinder, G, having at its lower end a valve, E, which keeps the cylinder closed until it is opened by the force of the accumulated steam therein forcing the valve down and acting to expel the water from the horizontal tube. When the force of the steam in the cylinder G is expended it is closed by the pressure of the water entering by the perforations F through the bottom of the tube D. Two of the tubes, with their cylinders, are used in moving the boat forward, while the others are used in backing the boat. F designates a steam-chest containing a slide valve, F and communicating by means of tubes 9 g with the cylinders G G,
which are attached to the tubes D, the latter extending from the middle to the stern of the boat, and being used for the purpose of moving the boat forward. By the action of the valve steam is admitted alternately to the respective cylinders G. As soon as the steam expends its force its exhaust takes place through the tube h, the exhaust steam passing into the heater h, from which it passes off through the smoke-stack, or in any other suitable manner. As the exhaust takes place the valve Eis closed and the cylinder again filled with steam. H designates a slidejacket containing a slide-valve, t, controlled by means of a lever, i. This jacket communicates with the steam-drum I of the boiler, and also with the steam-chest F The admission of steam to the latter is controlled bymeans of the valve '6. The cylinders J J, steam-chest K, valve K slide-jacket K and valve K are precisely the same in construction as those described, but are used for the purpose of backing the boat. The same tube E which conducts steam to the jacket H also carries steam to the jacket K which communicates with the chest K. The tube L conducts the exhaust steam from the chest K to the heater h. The stems of the valves F K are connected by means of a double crank-shaft M, which may be run by means of a belt or gearing from a pony -engine. The openings in the bottom of the boat at F consist of a number of small holes, which will admit water, but
will keep out dirt, pieces of wood, or othermaterial that would have a tendency to obstruct the tubes D D.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The cylinders or boxes G, tubes D, valvechest F and valve F tubes g, and valves E, in combination with the steam-boiler B and boat A, substantially as specified.
