WILLIAM H. ELLIOTT, O WASHENGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- FOURTH TO VIILLIAI!- F. W'AL'IER, GE 'WASHINGTON. DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
COMPOSTIE RAILROAD-TIE Application filed August 30, 1920.
To UJZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. ELLIo'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Composite Railroad-Ties, of which the following is a specification. I
The object of my present invention s the provision of a simple and durable railroad tie constructed with a view to taking up shock and jar and eliminating noise and also constructed with a View to facilitating repair-of the tie when occasion demands.
To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed. in the accompanying drawings, hereby tirade a part hereof i Figure l is a plan view ofa portion of a railway embodying several ties constructed in accordance with my invention.
2 is view partly in elevation and partly in section showing one of my novel ties and the arrangement of the same in relation to the rails and means by which the rails are detachably connected to the tie.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in both views of the drawings.
The rails 1 may be and preferably are of conventional construction.
My novel ties are identical in construction and therefore a detailed description of the tie shown in Fig. 2 and the appurtenances thereof will suffice to impart a definite understanding of all. The tie referred to comprises a tie proper or body 2 of concrete or concrete reinforced in appropriate manner with metal, cushioning elements 3 of wood on which the rails 1 are superimposed, bolts l with angular heads 5 at their lower ends countersunk in the underside of the body 2, and nuts 6 mounted on the upper threaded portions of the bolts to detachably hold the cushioning elements 3 to the upper side of the body. The said tie also comprises means to fasten the rails to the cushioning elements 3. This means includes a plurality of bolts 7 with angular heads 8 countersunk Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 15, 1921.
Serial No. 406,839.
in the undersides of the cushioning elements 3, clips 9 mounted on the upper portions of the bolts 7 and adapted to rest over the bases of the rails, and nuts 19 threaded on the upper portions of the bolts 7 and adapted to strongly hold the clips 9 down a ainst the upper sides of the wooden cushioning elements 3.
The simplicity of my novel tie construction will be readily appreciated from the foregoing, and in the practical use of the tie it will be understood that the Wooden blocks or cushioning elements 3 serve to absorb shock and jar and to prevent the imposition of the same on the tie body 2 so that there is no liability of the said tie body crumbling or breaking. It will also be apparent that the interposition of the elements 3 between the rails and the tie body 2 practically eliminates noise and contributes to the smooth passage of trains on the rails. My novel tie construction is also adapted to lend itself to facility of repa'r for it will be readily ap parent that by jacking up the rails and in- 'l:erposing new blocks 3 and bolting the rails down again, the usefulness of my novel tie construction may be indefinitely prolonged. In this connection the arrangement of all of the nuts at the upper side of the improvement is of material advantage, as is also the arrangement of the angular bolt heads in the undersides of the tie body 2 and the blocks 3, respectively inasmuch as the bolts are thereby held against turnin about their axes without the assistance 0 extraneous means.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
A railroad tie construction consisting essentially of a tie body of concrete having angular countersinks in its underside, a cushioning block of wood superimposed upon said body and having angular countersmks in its underside, bolts having angular heads arranged in said countersinks in the underside of the tie body, said bolts extending upwardly through the tie body and the cushioning block and having threaded upper portions, nuts removably mounted on said and the clips and having threaded upper threaded portions, clips mounted on the ends, and nuts mounted on said ends and discushioning block and adapted to hold a-i'u-il posed above the clips; the cushioning block 10 down upon the same, bolts having lower 2111- and the rail being separable as a unit from 5 gulzu' heads arranged in the eountersinks in the concrete body.
the underside of the cushioning block said In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. bolts extending upwardly through the block VILLIAM H. ELLIOTT.
