HEADREST FOR BARBER-CHAIRS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 8, 1921.
Application liled May 15, 1920. Serial No. 381,702.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, lVILLIAM D. DRIVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, have i vented new and useful Improvements in Headrests for Barber-Chairs, of which the following is a specificatiton.
The object of my present invention is the provision of a head rest, designed more especially but not necessarily for use on a baroers chair, and calculated to conduce materially to the comfort of a person who is being shaved or otherwise operated on.
To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
in the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof:
Figure l is a front elevation of the head constituting the best practical embodiment of my invention of which I am cognizant.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section taken through the upper portion of the head rest.
Figs. 3, 4c, 5 and 6 are detail views illustrative of different advantageous features of my novel head rest.
Similar numerals of reference designate 0 corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
Among other elements my novel head rest comprises a body 1, equipped in approved manner with a pendent shank 2. The said 5 body 1 is concavo-convex in the direction of its length, with its concave side uppermost and occupied by a plurality of anti-friction hearings 3, preferably of roller type.
Arranged and movable endwise on the body 1 is a casing 4, the upper wall 5 of which is superimposed on the anti-friction hearings or rollers 3. At its ends the easing a is equipped with clips 6, connected thereto by means of screws or other appropriate devices, and at the inner sides of the bearings in the clips 6.
clips 6 are arranged springs 7 the function of which is to cushion the endwise movements of the casing a and thereby absorb shock and prevent the transmission of the same to the head of the person being operated on.
Arranged above and extending lengthwise in the same direction as the casing et is a pad 8, designed to comfortably receive and support the head of the person in the chair. at its ends the pad 8 is provided with trunnions 9 that are journaled in appropriate By virtue of the said provision the pad 8 is adapted to rock about its axis, and thereby accommodate itself to the head of the person in the chair and contribute to the comfort of said person.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that my novel head rest is not unduly expensive, and yet is adapted to render the stay of a person in a barbers chair or a dentists chair much more comfortable than any ordinary head rest. This will be better appreciated when it is stated that incident to the turning of the head of the person from one side to the other the pad 8 easily moves, and therefore the person in the chair is subjected to no discomfort whatever.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is 2- In a head rest for barhers and analogous chairs, the combination of a body concave at its upper side in the direction of its length, a casing inclosing and movable endwise on the body and having an upper wall concave in the direction of its length, antifriction means interposed between said wall and the upper side of the body, clips connected to the ends of the casing, and a pad arranged above the casing and having end trunnions onrnaled in the said clips.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
WILLIAM DENTON DRIVER.
