Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. URBAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to that class of garbage receptacles which is exemplified by Patent 956,454, granted April 26, 1910, and the object of my invention is to improve the garbage receptacle in the following particulars.
First, the upper portion of the garbage receptacle is made separate from the lower portion thereof and connected to the lower portion of the receptacle so that it may be removed, when injured, thus obviating the necessity of completely discarding the receptacle should its upper portion be broken or materially injured. With this class of garbage receptacles the upper portions thereof are exposed to more wear and tear than the lower portions thereof due to garbage removing implements contacting therewith and small garbage receptacles or utensils being knocked against the top portion of the large receptacle to remove the garbage from the small receptacle. This wear and tear is particularly noticeable at the filling opening of the garbage receptacle, and such opening has been Areinforced so as to prevent the walls or edges from chipping` cracking and breaking when subjected to blows.
Second, since such receptacles are ordinarily located in the rear end of a yard and project through the fence into an alley, the protruding end of the receptacleis often struck by vehicles and subjected to rough usage, therefore the protruding end of the receptacle has been made of greater strength than the inner end thereof and is now designed to remain in use for a considerable period of time compared to concrete garbage receptacles heretofore used.
Third, the garbage receptacle is provided` with a drain opening which permits of garbage drying out in the receptacle so as to be easily handled, and the drain opening permits of a sewer connection or suitable connections so that the interior of the receptacle may be flushed and maintained in a sanitary condition.
Fourth, the hardware used in connection with the concrete receptacle is of special design so as to make the receptacle water and insect tight, and these and other improvements will be hereinafter more fully considered and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the concrete garbage receptacle;
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the lower portion thereof;
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view showing a drain opening, and
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the concrete receptacle.
The garbage receptacle is made of concrete or other plastic material and comprises an inner vertical wall 1, parallel side walls 2 and 3, and a' bottom wall 4, all of these walls being formed integral and. of uniform thickness throughout, with the exception of the outer edge of the bottom wall 4, which is disposed at an angle, as at 5, and its inner or upper face scooped out, as at 6, so as to form a liquid shedding ledge at the outer end of the bottom wall. This liquid shedding edge serves as an end abutment, prevents liquid garbage from flowing out of the outer end of the receptacle, and permits of a shovel or other implement being readily used for removing garbage from the interior of the receptacle.
The outer ends of the walls 2 and 3 and the edge of the angular ledge of the bottom wall 4 have inclined faces 7 and 8 with intermediate horizontal shoulders 9. Air chored in the inclined faces 8 and the upper faces of the walls 1, 2 and 3 are bolts 10 which have the screwthreaded ends thereof protruding from the faces 8 and the upper edges of the wall, as best vshown in Fig. 2.
The upper portion 0f the garbage receptacle is in the form of a concrete cover 11 having an angularly disposed front wall 12 which is mounted on the shoulders 9 and the faces 8 0f the walls 2 and 3 with the cover 11 forming the top of the receptacle. The cover 11 and the front wall 12 are made of two parts with the front wall 12 of greater thickness than the other wall of the receptacle, and said front wall coperates with the inclined faces 7 in forming a rectangular outer doorway for the receptacle. The cover 11 and the front wall 12 are provided with openings 13 to receive bolts 10 and the threaded ends of said bolts extend into recesses 14 in the cover and front wall to permit of nuts 15 being screwed on the bolts, the recesses 14 being then lled with concrete 17 or a suitable liller, as shown in uitably connected to the lower outer edge of the front wall 12, preferably by hinges 18, is a drop lid 19 having its upper edge set in the doorway of the receptacle and its lower edge overlapping the doorway and eX- tending onto the inclined face of the bottom wall ledge to frictionally engage a resilient member 20 serving as a hold-fast device for retaining the lid 19 closed. A handle 21 on the lid permits of its being raised and swung against the inclined front wall 12, to remain open while garbage is removed through the outer doorway of the receptacle. The constructive arrangement of the lid 19 prevents water or other liquid from draining into the receptacle through the outer doorway thereof and it is practically impossible for insects to crawl under the closed lid into the receptacle.
The cover 11, adjacent its inner end, has a filling opening 22 with its walls reinforced by an annular rib 23 on the inner face of the cover 11. The outer end of the lling opening 22. is reinforced by an annular metallic member 24 set in the cover and suitably anchored relative thereto7 so that the annular metallic member will prevent the edges of the opening walls being chipped or broken when subjected to blows of receptacles to be emptied.
Connected to the cover by hinges 25 is a lid 26 and said lid has its outer wall provided with a handle 27 and its inner wall with a detachable container 28 for a suitable deodorant or disinfectant.
The side wall 2 at its juncture with the walls 1 and 4 has a drain opening 29 formed by setting a sleeve in the wall 2, as bestshown in Fig. 3. The sleeve has its wall screwthreaded so as -to receive a detachable plug 3() for closing the opening 29 and when the plug is removed the receptacle may be drained or connected to a sewer to permit of the interior of the garbage receptacle being flushed and thoroughly cleaned. At the inner end of the opening 29 there is a plate 31 provided with channel guides 32 for a strainer 33, said strainer having a suitable handle 34 which permits of the strainer being raised and lowered. This strainer is adapted to prevent solid or bulky matter from being drained from the garbage'receptacle and is adapted to be raised when the receptacle is to be flushed and cleaned. With the plug 30 removed and the strainer lowered, it is obvious that the receptacle may be set at a slight inclina-tion so that liquid matter will drain through the opening 29, thus permitting garbage within the receptacle to dry out and remain in such condition as to be readily removed from the outer doorwaf of the receptacle.

A garbage receptacle having a rear wall, a bottom wall provided with an inf clined ledge, side walls provided with inclined faces and horizontal shoulders, a cover mounted on theupper edges of said side and rear walls, and provided withy a filling opening, a lid for such opening, a1
front wall mounted on the shoulders of said side walls yand coperating therewith and the ledge of said bottom wall in forming a doorway, and a lid for the doorway.
2. A garbage receptacle as characterized in claim 1, wherein the cover and front wall are held in place by bolts anchored in the side and rearjwalls with nuts on said bolts and disposed in recesses in said cover and front wall with the recesses closed by iillers.
3. A garbage receptacle having a rear wall, a bottom wall provided with an inclined ledge, side walls provided with inclined faces and horizontal shoulders, a
cover mounted on the upper edges of said f side and rear walls, and provided with a filling opening, a lid for such opening, a front wall mounted on the shoulders of said side walls and coperating therewith and the ledge of said bottom wall in forming a doorway, alid forthe doorway, one of said side walls having a drain opening adjacent the rear and bottom walls, an adjustable strainer carried by said side wall for the inner end of said drain opening, and a plug for closing the outer end of the drain opening of said side wall.
