To all who m it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID ZAIDEN, a citizen of Russia, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Walking Attachments for Dolls, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates, generally, to toys, such as dolls, toy animals, and the like; and the invention has reference, more particularly, to an improved means for connecting the legs of such toys to the body thereof whereby the toy may be so manipulated as to cause the legs to simulate the motions of walking.
The invention has for its principal object to provide a novel construction of connecting attachment for securing the legs to the body of a toy, such as a doll, so that the legs may be caused to simulate the motions of walking; and to this end the present invention provides a novel construction of leg joint which may be either built into new dolls or which may be utilized as attachments to convert old dolls into walking dolls.
Other objects of the present invention, notat this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the same.
With the various objects of the present invention in view, the same consists, primarily, in the novel construction of walking attachment for dolls and similar toys hereinafter set forth; and, furthermore, the invention consistsin the novel arrangements and combinations of the various parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, all of which will be hereinafter mo e fully described and claimed.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings. in which Figure 1 is a front view of a doll provided with the novel walking at achments made according to and embodying the principles of my present invention; Figs.
2 and 3 are side elevations of the doll (the upper portion of the body-being broken away), the same illustrating the operations or the novel attachments as the legs are caused to make successive stepping movements ln simulation of walking; Fig. 4 is a detail face view of one of mynovel walking attachments removed from the doll, the same being drawn on an enlarged scale; and F 1g. 5 is a horizontal section, taken on l1ne 5- 5 in said Fig. 4.
S1m1lar characters of reference are employed in all of the above-described views, 9 to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to said drawings, the reference character 1 indicates adoll, and 2 indicates the trunk or body-portion thereof. Connected with the shoulder portions of sald body-portion 2 are shoulder brackets 3, provided at their free ends with downwardly extending integral portions 4 providing stationary upper arm parts parallel to and outwardly off-set fromthe sides of the body-portion 2. Pivotally connected with the lower extremities of said upper arm parts 1 are fore-arm portions 5. The reference characters 6 and 7 indicate the respective leg-portions of the doll.
My novel walking attachments serve to interconnect said respective leg-portions 6 and 7 with the lower end of the body-portion 2. Each walking attachment comprises a stationary member 8 which is rigidly secured at its upper end, by means of fastening screws 9, or equivalent means, to one side of the lower end of the body-portion '2. and so that the free end of the same projects downwardly from said body-portion. Pivotally connected with the lower free end of said stationary member 8 is a swinging or oscillatable member 10, to the lower end of 95 which is secured by means of bolts 11 and 12. or other equivalent fastening means, one of the leg-portions of the doll. The meeting ends of said stationary member 8 and swinging or oscillatable member 10 are secured together in pivotal relation by means of a pivot bolt 13 passed through perforations or openings provided in said meeting ends for the reception of the same. Said stationary member 8 is provided in its body, 105, above the point of pivotal connection with said swinging or oscillatable member 10, with a cutaway portion or opening 1 1, the sldes 15 and 16 ot which provide stops adapted, at proper times, to be engaged by' a stop-lug 17, which is integrally connected with the upper end ofsaid swinging or osclllatable member 10, and which is turned downwardly and inwardly'so as to move laterally within the embrace of said opening 14. In l ke manner, said swinging or oscillatable member 10 is provided in its body, below the point of its pivotal connec tion with said stationary member 8, with a 'embrac'e'of said opening 18.
Coiled about the pivot bolt 13 is a spring V member22, one leg 23 of which extends up- .wardly, thesame having at its free'e11d a lateral portion or projection 24 arranged in stopped engagement with the side 16 of the 7" opening 1411f said stationary member 8, and the other leg 25 of which extends down wardly, the same having its free end por tion 26 engaged with the end of the bolt 12,
whereby the tension of'said spring member normally causes the swinging or oscil'latable 17 with the side 15 of the opening 141- of the member 10 to swing forwardly, and to thereby normally hold the leg connectedtherewith in a forwardly swung position, as de-' termined by the engagement of the stop lug stationary member 8, and the simultaneous engagement of the side 19 of the opening 18 for the oscillatable member 10 with the stop- :lug 21; A nut 27 engaged on the end of said pivot bolt 13, holds the spring member 22 against accidental displacement.
' As will be understood from an inspection of the drawings, one of the attachments, above described in detail, is provided for each'leg-portion 6 and 7, to operatively connect the same for walking movements with thebody portion 2 of the doll or the like.

2, while the osillatable member 10 of the leg 6 is normally positioned to throw the latter forward, as shown in said Fig. 2. By then slightlytipping the doll 'sidewise-and inwardly the leg 6 is brought down with its foot portion engaging the floor, and at the samertime the leg 7 is slightly raised to cause its toot portionrto clear the floor, whereupon the, additional stored tension of the spring member controlling the oscillatable member 10 ofsaid leg 7 will cause the latter to swing iiorwardinto the next step ping position, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings vhile the forward movement of the doll body causes the .oscillatable member 10 of the 6 to swing back with said leg and against the tension ofitsspring member. ,It will be apparent that successive step- Ziitmn, so that as the child walks along, the doll. is likewise caused to simulate walking movements at the side of the child. It will be understood that the respective stopliigs 17 and 21, as alternately engaged with opposite sides of the openings '14 and 18, will serve to limit the swinging movements of the oscillata le members 10 and the leg portions connected therewith, and thereby tcnd to maintain the stepping movements equal and uniform. r
I am aware that some'changes may be made in the arrangement and combinations of the various. devices and parts, as well as in tae details of the construction of the same,
without departing from'the scope of my present invention as set forth in the fore going specification, and as defined in the'appended claims. llerice, I do not limit'my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts as described in said'specific'ation, nor
do I confine myself tothe exact details of the construction of said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 2i- '1. The combination with the body and leg portions of a toy of walking attachments in- V terconnecting said leg portions with the body, each comprising a stationary member secured to the body, an oscillatable member 7 secured ,to a leg portion, meanspivotally connecting said oscillatable member with said stationary membenand spring means normally swinging said oscillatable member in a forward direction while adapted 'to yield to rearward swinging movement of the same. 7
2. The combination with the body and leg portions of aftoy of walking attachments interconnecting said leg portions with the body, each comprising astationary member secured to the body, an oscillatable member secured to a leg portion, means pivotally connecting said oscillatable member with said ping i movements may be thus caused ad 7 stationary member, spring means normally swinging said oscillatable member in a forward direction while adapted to yield to rearward swinging movement of the same, and stop means for limiting the swinging movements of said oscillatable member in each direction.
3. The combination with the body and leg portions of a toy of walking attachments interconnecting said leg portions with the body, each comprising a stationary member rigidly secured by one end to the body, an oscillatable member pivotally secured to the free endof said stationary member, the lower end of said oscillatable member being rigidly secured in supporting relation to a leg portion, spring means interconnected between said stationary member and said oscillatable member to normally press the latter in a forwardly swung position, and a stop device on said oscillatable member to cooperate with portions of said stationary member for limiting the movement of the former in each direction.

5. The combination with a toy having a body and leg portions of walking attachments interconnecting the latter with the former, each comprising a stationary member rigidly secured by its upper end to said body, an oscillatable member rigidly secured by its lower end to a leg portion, a pivot means connecting together the free ends of said stationary member and said oscillatable member, a spring means coiled on said pivot means, one arm of said spring means being ngaged with said stationary member, and the other arm of said spring means being engaged with said oscillatable member, said spring means normally swinging said oscillatable member in a forward direction while adapted to yield to rearward swinging movement of the same, and stop means for limiting the swinging movements of said oscillatable member in each direction.
6. The combination with a toy having a body and leg portions of walking attachments interconnecting the latter with the former, each comprisinga stationary member rigidly secured by its upper end to said body, an oscillatable member rigidly secured by its lower end to a leg portion, a pivot means connecting together the free ends of said stationary member and said oscillatable member, a spring means coiled on said pivot means, one arm of said spring means being engaged with said stationary member, the other arm of said spring means being engaged with said oscillatable member, said sprin means normally swinging said oscillatable member in a forward direction while adapted to yield to rearward swinging movement of the same, said stationary memher having an opening in its body, and said oscillatable member having at its upper end an inwardly turned stop-lug projecting into said opening to cooperate with the sides of the latter.
7. The combination with a toy having a body and leg portions of walking attachments interconnecting the latter with the former, each comprising astationary member rigidly secured by its upper end to said,

and said stationary member having at its lower free end an inwardly turned stop-lug projecting into said latter opening to cooperate with the sides of the same.
8.
