Patented Mar. 8, 1921.
Application filed February 10, 1919. Serial No. 276,242..
To all whom'z't ma concern:
Be it known that FREDERICK W. Parson, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Phonograph- Needles, of which the following is a specification.
My'invention relates to im rovements in phonograph needles and has r its object the provision of an improved construction of this character by means of which a needle is provided, capable of producing varying tones and also capable of prolonged use and ready renewal.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1, is a perspective view of a phonogr%ph needle embodying the invention, ig. 2, an end view of the same, and Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of the same. The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a holder .in the form of a rod split diametrically into two separable parts 4 and 5, said parts being provided with external annular registering grooves 6 to contain binding wires for binding the two parts together. The part 5 is provided in its inner face with a lon 'tudinal V-shaped groove or bore 7 exten ing the full length thereof and adapted to receive a section of fine steel wire 8, as indicated. The arrangement is such that the steel wire 8 will be frictionally clamped in the groove 7 so as to beheld in place with sufiicient force to permit of the use of the same as the stylus or sound transmitting member of an ordinary phonograph, but loose enough to permit of the ready longitudinal adjustment of said wire in said holder. Best results will ordinarily be attained by adjusting the wire 8 until the same protrudes from the operative end of the holder 45 a comparatively short distance or about from one thirty-second to three sixty-fourths of an inch. By increasing the length of operative wire rotruding from the holder, the tone emitted by the instrument may be softened, and vice versa. As the wire 8 wears, the same may be adjusted I 2. A phono through the holder until the greater portion thereof has been thus consumed, whereupon preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of'such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the ap ended claims.
aving described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A phonograph needle comprising a split holder; means for circumferentially binding the portions of said holder together; and a .wire contact member frictionally clam ed between the portions of said holder and fieely adjustable longitudinally therein, substantially as described.
aph needle comprising a holder in the orm of a split rod having a bore extending therethrough; wires binding the portions of said rod together; and a contact member frictionally clamped between the portions of said holder and freely adjustable longitudinally therein, substantially as descri ed.
3. A phonograph needle comprlsmg" a holder in the form of a split rod, themeeting face of one portion of said rod being provided with a longitudinal V-shaped groove or bore extending the full length of sa1d rod, there bein external annular grooves adjacent the on s of said rod; binding wires positioned in said grooves and bind ng the parts of said rod together; and a w1re contact member resting 1n said groove and fr1c-' tionally clamped therein, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I haveslgned my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK W. PEISCH.
