Be it known that 1, WILLIAM T. SHERMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tube-Plate- Stripping Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
This invention relates to brush-making apparatus and particularly to apparatus for makin rubber brush-pads in accordance with the method set forth in United States Letters Patent No. 1,324,178, dated Decemher 9, 1919, granted upon application filed by me, to which patent reference may be had for a more complete understanding of the nature and objects of the present invention.
In the manufacture of rubber brush-pads in accordance with said patented invention, a perforated rubber pad formed with numerous perforate openings is supported between two clamp-plates provided with perforations or openings corresponding in number and location with the openings in the rubber-pad, while tubes corresponding in number and arrangement with the openings in the pad and mounted upon a supporting tube-plate are forced through the respective openings in one of said clamp-plates and the rubberpad into the respective openings in the other clamp-plate.
Bristles are then inserted within the respective tubes after which the tubes are withdrawn from the openings in the clampplates and pad, leaving the bristles within the respective openings in the pad. The openings in the pad are quite small and are temporarily enlarged by the insertion of the respective tubes. The pad being made of soft vulcanized rubber closely grips and frictionally holds the respective tubes so that it is quite difficult to withdraw the tubes from the rubber pad.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide means whereby the tubeplate can be withdrawn from the rubber-pad and clamp-plates in the manufacture of a brush in accordance with said patented method.

Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 21 is the bed of the machine, and 22 is an overhanging-arm, havingahead, 23, upon which a handle, 24, is pivotally mounted at 25.
lVithin the head, 23, is mounted a plunger, 26, movable toward and from the bed, 21, said plunger being connected by a link, 27 with the handle, 24, to form a toggle-joint whereby the plunger, 26, is lowered and raised by the raising and lowering of the handle, 24.
At the front, rear and opposite sides of a space on the bed under the plunger, 26, I mount upon the bed claw-members, 28-28 28, at the front, 292929, at the rear and 3030 on the respective sides of said space.
The claw-members, 29, may be mounted in fixed position upon the bed with their claws, 31, overhanging said space.
The claw-members, 28, are pivotally mounted at 32, whereby they are adapted to be swung to and from a position in'which their claws, 33, shall overhang said space, and they may be swung to and from said position by hand or in any known manner.
The claw-members, 30, are pivotally mounted at 34, whereby they are adapted to swing to and from a position in which their claws, 35, shall overhang said space.
These claw-members, 30, are yieldingly held by coil-springs 36, in position for their claws, 35, to overhang said space, and they may be forced apart against the force of the springs 36, in any known manner so that their claws shall not overhang said space.
As a means for forcing apart the clawmembers, 30, I have shown a pair of slides, 37', mounted in slideways, 38, extending transversely through the bed, the outer ends of which slides are adapted to abut against the respective claw-members, 30.
The inner ends of these slides, 37, are engaged by a cam-plate, 39, slidably mounted in a longitudinal slideway, 40, formed in the bed, and adapted to be operated by means of a handle, 41.
Forward movement of the cam-plate, 39, serves to wedge apart the slide-plates, 37, and thus to force apart the claw-members, 30, so that their claws, 35, shall not overhang said space on the bed.
Rearward movement of the cam-plate, 39, releases the claw-members, 30, to the action of their respective springs, 36, which serve to restore said members to a position such that their claws, 35, overhang said space.
The space on the bed thus bounded by the claw-members, 28, 29 and 30, is adapted to receive the pair of tube-connected brushplates suitably supported; and in'Fig. 5, I have shown said tube-connected plates suitably supported and mounted upon the bed within said space.
F or convenience in comparison, I have designated the two tube-connected plates and the parts directly associated therewith as shown in said prior patent with the same reference characters used to designate the respective parts in said patent.
Thus, 1, is the rubber-pad clamped or embraced between the lower clamp-plate, 3, and the upper clamp-plate, 4, the lower clampplate, 3, resting upon a suitable support or base, 7 and 5 is the tube-plate, carrying the tubes, 6, which are shown forced down through the openings in the upper clampplate, 4, rubber-pad, 1, and lower clampplate, 3. i
Bristles, 42, are shown inserted within the respective tubes.
In accordance with my invention, I form the upper clamp-plates, 4, with edge-portions, 4*, which project outwardly beyond the edges of the tube-plate, 5, at points where the upper clamp-plate, 4, is to be engaged by the claws on the claw-members, 28, 29 and 30.
In mounting the tube-connected plates and their support upon the bed, 21, for the stripping operation, the front claw-members, 28, are swung forward by hand to the position shown in Fig. 6 in which they are substantially in the plane of the bed, 21, and the claw-members, 30, are forced apart to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, by drawing forward the cam-slide, 39, by means of its handle, 41, to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig 4.
The tube-connected plates and their support, 7, are then placed upon the bed, 21, with the claws, 31, overhanging the projecting edge-portions, 4 of the upper clamp-plate, 4, whereby said upper clampplate, 4, the rubber-pad, the lower clampplate, 3, and the support, 7, are all held against upward movement.
I have shown a pair of guide-plates, 43, at opposite sides of the space occupied by the support, 7, to facilitate the placing of the support, 7, upon the bed, 21.
Fixed upon the lower end of the plunger, 26, is a spider having members, 44, upon which are pivotally mounted a pair of front claw-members, 45, terminating at their lower ends in claws, 46.
The spider also has members, 47, upon which are pivotally mounted a pair of rear claw-members, 48, terminating at their lower ends in claws, 49.
The spider also has members, 50, on opposite sides upon which are pivotally mounted side claw-members, 31, terminating at their lower ends in claws, 52.
A. yoke-shaped handle-lever, 53, is pivot ally mounted at 54, upon the overhanging arm, 22, inclosing the head, 23, pivotally de pending from the branches of which lever are links, 55, one at each side of the head, 23.
The link, 55, at each side of the head, 23, is connected by a link, 56, with the neighboring side claw-member, 51, whereby as the links, 55, are raised by upward movement of the handle lever, 53, the side claw-members, 51, will he moved in a direction to move their claw-ends, 52, outwardly, that is, away from each other, while downward movement of the handle-lever, 53, will cause said clawends to be moved toward each other.
A rod, 57, extends through the upper ends of the front claw-members, 45, the opposite ends of the rod being connected by links, 58, with the respec ive links, 55, and the rear claw-members, 43, are in like manner connected by a rod, 59, the ends of which are connected by links, 60, with the respective links, 55, whereby upward movement of the handle-lever, 53, actuates the front and rear claw-members to move their claw-ends away from each other, while downward move ment of the handle-lever causes said clawends to be moved toward each other.
I also mount upon the bottom of the spider a presser-plate 61, yieldingly forced downward by coil springs, 62, into engagement with the tube-plate, 5, when the tubeplate is in position to be engaged by the claws, 46, 49 and 52.
The operation of the machine is as follows:
The tube-connected plates having been placed upon the bed in the position shown in Fig. 5, in the manner above described, the cam-plate, 39, is forced rearwardly by means of the handle, 41, releasing the slides, 37, to the action of the coil-springs, 36, which force toward each other the claw-members, 30, to cause their claws, 35, to overhang the edge-portions, 4 of the upper clampplate, 4; and in the front claw-members, 28, are swung upward and rearward to cause their claws, 33, to overhang the front edgeportions, 43 of said plate, while the rear edge-portions, 4, thereof are held beneath the claws, 31, of the rear claw-members, 29.
The upper clamp-plate, 4, is formed with notches, 4 in line with the respective clawmembers, 45, 48 and 51, carried by the plunger, 26.
- After the tube-connected plates have been placed and secured upon the bed as above described the plunger, 26, is lowered by raising the handle, 24, while the clawends of the claw- members 45, 48 and 50, are spread apart by upward movement of the hand-lever, 53.
\Vhen the plunger, 26, has been sufficiently lowered to somewhat compress the springs, 62, through engagement of the presser-plate, 61, with the tube-plate, 5, the handle-lever, 53, is forced downward thereby forcing inwart the claw-ends of the claw-members, 4548 and 50, causing said members to enter the respective notches, 4 in the upper clamp-plate, 4, and their claws to underlyingly engage the tube-plate, 5.
The handle, 24, is then forced downward to raise the plunger, 26, which carries with it the tube-plate, 5, engaged by the claws on the claw-members, 45, 48 and 50, while the upper clamp -plate, rubber-pad, lower clamp-plate and support, 7, are all held down upon the bed by the engagement of the claws on the claw-members, 28, 29 and 30, with the upper side of the upper clampplate, 4.
The tube-plate, 5, is held by the springact-uated presser-plate, 61, closely against the claws on the claw-members, 45, 48 and 50, during the operation and thereafter until the tube-plate is released by upward movement of the handle-lever, 53, whereby said claw-ends are again separated.
.Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a machine of the class described and in combination, a bed; a member movable toward and from the bed; means for moving said member toward and from the the bed; claw-members mounted upon the bed; and claw-members carried by said movable member with their claws in opposed relation to the claws on the bed-claw-members.
2. In a machine of the class described and in combination, a bed; a member movable toward and from the bed; means for moving said member toward and from the bed; claw-members mounted upon the bed at opposite sides and opposite ends of a space adapted to receive a pair of suitably supported tube-connected brush-plates; claw-members mounted upon said movable member with the claws in opposed relation to and out of alinement with the respective claws on the bed-claw-members 3. In a machine of the class described and in combination, a bed; a member movable toward and from the bed; means for moving said member toward and from the bed; claw-members mounted upon said movable member; and claw-members mounted upon the bed movable to and from a position overhanging a space on the bed under said movable member, the claws on said last-mentioned claw-members being in opposed relation to the claws on the first-mentioned clawmembers.
4. In a machine of the class described and in combination, a bed; a member movable toward and from the bed; means for moving said member toward and from the bed; claw-members mounted upon the bed at opposite sides and opposite ends of a space adapted to receive a pair of suitably supported tube-connected brush-plates under said movable member; claw-members mounted upon said movable member in opposed relation to and out of alinement with the respective claws on the bed-claw-members; and means for moving said last-mentioned claw-members into and out of position to underlyingly engage the uppermost of said tube-connected brush-plates.
5. In a machine of the class described and in combination, a bed; a member movable toward and from the bed; means for moving said member toward and from the bed; claw-members mounted upon the bed movable to and from a position for their claws to overhang a space on the bed under said movable member adapted to receive a pair of suitably supported tube-connected brush-plates; claw-members mounted upon said movable member with the claws in opposed relation to and out of alinement with the respective claws on the bed-claw-members; and means for moving said last-mentioned claw-membersto and from a position in which their claws'are' adapted to engage the underside of the uppermost of said tubeconnected plates. I
6. In a machine of the class described and in combination, a bed; a member movable toward and from the bed; means for moving said member toward and from the bed; claw-members mounted upon the bed at opposite sides and opposite ends of a space adapted to receive a suitably supported pair of tube-connected brush-plates; claw-members mounted upon said movable member with the claws in opposed relation to the respective claws on the bed-clawmembers; and a plate yieldingly mounted on the under side of said movable member inposition to engage one of said tube-connected 10 plates and yieldingly hold the-same against the claws of the claw-members mounted on said movable member.
