I nvew/i/or EZZSworZiz rm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAMP-SUPPORTING BRACKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 8, 1921.
Application filed March 21, 1918. Serial No. 223,832.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLswoRTH A. HAW- rHonNE, a citizen of the United States, and
a resident of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Lamp-Supporting Brackets, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to supporting brackets for lamps, lanterns and other objects, and is more especiallyconcerned with abracket having means for locking the lamp or other body to the bracket in such a manner as to permit the same to be mounted and dismounted with great ease, while still ati'ording security against accidental or unauthorized dismounting.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the following description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings of one'specific embodiment thereof, while its scope will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is an elevation of a lantern and supporting bracket embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 alone;
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the supporting bracket viewed from the left-hand side of Fig. 1; v
Fig. 1 is a sectional view on line et-4 of Fig. 3, but with the lock removedrand ig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, and to the embodiment of my invention which is illustrated therein, I have shown a lantern 6 and a lantern-supporting bracket 7, which may be provided with any suitable cooperating means for supporting the lantern on the bracket. In the present example, the bracket is generally L-shaped, and has a vertical web 8 for attachment to an appropriate support, and a horizontal web 9 which extends beneath and forms a support for the lantern 6, as shown in Fig. 1. This provides a very substantial support, which may receive the entire weight of the lantern.
The lantern may be provided with one or more laterally projecting lugs 10, and the bracket may be provided with one or more, herein a pair of laterally-projecting lugs 11 is a plan of the supporting bracket and 12, embracing the lug or lugs 10, as shown in Fig. 1. In the present example, the lugs 11 and 12 are formed by punching the same out of the stock which forms the web 8, as will be evident from an inspection of Figs. 3 and 1. The lugs 10 are herein provided with openings 13 and the lugs'll and 12 with openings 1 1 and 15, respectively, normally registering therewith to receive a suitable locking member 15' herein in the form of a vertically slidable bolt 16. The latter is herein guided partly by said lugs and partly by a generally L-shaped guide 17, having an opening 18 in line with the openings 14 and 15, as best shown in Fig. 4. The guide 17, which may be secured in place in a suitable manner, as by electrically welding the same to the body of the bracket, also serves as a means for reinforcing the latter, as will be evident from an inspection of Fig. 4. The edge of the horizontal flange of guide 17 forms an abutment cooperating with the side of the lantern and may serve as herein to prevent rotation thereof.
As a means normally to hold the bolt 16 in its locking position, and to restore the same to such position after having been withdrawn therefrom, I have herein provided a spring 19 encircling said bolt, and bearing at its lower end against the rein forcing member 17, and at its upper end against a suitable abutment carried by said locking member, herein a pin 20. By withdrawing the bolt 16 in a downward direction against the pressure of the spring 19 until its upper end clears the lower lug 10, the lamp thus may be withdrawn from its place on the mounting.
If desired, I may provide suitable means to lock the bolt 16 in its normal position, thereby to prevent unauthorized removal of the lamp, and to that end I have herein provided said bolt with an ear 21 having a hole 22, which normally registers with a hole 23 in an ear 24. The latter may be conveniently formed by punching the same out of the material which forms the supporting base 9 for the lamp. Through the perforations thus formed, I may introduce a suitable locking element, and in the present instance have provided for such purpose a padlock 25 having a bow or hasp 26, normally extending through the openings and locking the bolt 16. It is evident that the bolt can be Withdrawn and the lamp removed only by first removing the padlock.
The bracket may be secured to any suitable support in any appropriate manner, as by providing screws 27 extending through perforations 28 in the web 8. By reference to Fig. 5, it will be observed that the screws and perforations are so located that, when the lamp is in place, said screws are rendered practically inaccessible, thus making it difiicult for an unauthorized person to re move the bracket from its support. I
While I have herein shown and described one specific form or embodiment of my invention for illustrative purposes, and have disclosed and discussed in detail the construction and arrangement incidental to one specific application thereof, it is to be understood that the invention is limited neither to the mere details or relative arrangement prising a bracket having two flat flanges at of parts, nor to its specific embodiment herein shown, but that extensive deviations from the illustrated form or embodiment of the invention may be'made, without departing from the principles thereof. Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is: 1. A device of the class described comright angles, one of the flanges being provided with an apertured lug formed by punching said flange to form a tongue perpendicular to said flange, the other flange being provided with an integrallug formed by punching said flange to form a tongue bent out from said flange, the first mentioned tongue entering the angular space between said flanges and the second extending in an outward direction with reference to said space, a bolt extending through the second flange and the first lug and having means to secure it to the second lug.
2. A device as described in claim 1 wherein a second angular member is secured at the angle of the first.
8. A device as described in claim 1 wherein the second lug is apertured and the bolt is provided with an apertured end, the two to receive a locking element.
The combination of a body and a support therefor, said support comprising a generally L-shaped bracket having two arms one of which extends beneath said body and the other of which is disposed laterally of said body, the'last-mentioned arm having means cooperating with the first-mentioned arm to hold said body against movement perpendicular to the first-mentioned arm, and a locking bolt extending through the first-mentioned arm to hold said body against movement perpendicular to said lastmentioned arm. 7
In testimony whereof 1 have signed my name to this specification.
ELLSWORTH A. HAXVTHORNE.
