CARBURETER.
To all whom t may cof/wem Be it known that I, IVILLIAM JAMEs, a subject of the King of England, and residing at Birkenhead, in the county of Chester, England, have invented Improvements in Carbureters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to carbureters used in connection with atomizing liquid fuel supplied to internal combustion engines and the like, and of the type more i particularly which is adapted to cause the mixed stream of air and fuel at one point of its flow, to pass through itself, prior to its being discharged from the atomizing device.
It has been found that in carbureting mechanisms or apparatus of this kind, as hitherto made, in some conditions of running of the engine, the delive of the air and atomized liquid is not satisfactory, or sufficiently full; and one of the primary objects of this invention is to provide improvements in connection with this type of carbureting appliance or device by which these defects are obviated or overcome, and the delivery of the fuel is uniform under all conditions, and at all rates of speed of the motor or engine.
By this construction and arrangement of appliances the objects and ends above referred to are accomplished.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section, and Fig. 2 a plan in section on the line AA Fig. 1.
In this apparatus 1 is the float chamber; 2 the induction passage to the engine or pump as the case may be; 3 the choke tube; 4 the outer tube, and 5 the air inlet to the carbureter.
Air for atomizing or va-porizine` the fuel is supplied to the jet device by the central tube 7; and the fuel is supplied to the jet through a straight annular passage 8 formed by and between the tube 7 and the tube 9; and these tubes fit within the fixed outer tube 4, the upper part of which constitutes the jet. The tube 4, and the annular conduit 8 are straight, as stated, so that the stream of fluid has a continuous straight course into the upper or dome part 6 of the appliance.

face through a solid head 11 fitted onto the upper end 0f 7; and below these holes the head has a cylindrical enlarged part 12, which fills the annular space between the tube 7 and the tube 9, but is provided with a plurality of grooves 13, above each of which is one of the radial holes l0; thus an injector effect is produced in which the rush of air from the holes, draws up the fuel through the grooves, and the tube 9 terminates at the level of the top of the part 12.
rl`he solid head 11 of the tube 7, between its upper part and the top of the part 12, is recessed annularly as shown; and the upper surface of the head, and the level of the bottom of the practically annular combustible mixture discharge orifice or port 14, are in the same horizontal plane.
By this construction the air to be supplied to the fuel is delivered into the upward flowing streams of same passing through the grooves 13, in a multiplicity of radial streams fiowing into same, at, or nearly at right angles; and from this point the mixture flows in an annular stream past the discharge orifice or port 14, and up the interior of the dome tube 6, and then returns from the latter, and passes through the annular stream, through the port 14 at right angles to the upward flowing stream.

A carbureter, a central airV tube communicating with the atmosphere, an annular liquid fuel conduit surrounding said tube, a head secured upon the upper end of the air tube and formed with openings communicating with said tube, said head having a cylindrical enlargement fitting in the annular liquid fuel conduit, the enlargement being formed with grooves opening into said fuel conduit, and a body surrounding the fuel conduit and air tube and extending above the same, said body being closed at the upper end and formed below said upper end with openings leading beyond the body.
