Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MULLALY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.-
'|MPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR MELTING SNOW.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,020, dated March 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MULLALY, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Machine for Melting Snow and Ice in the Streets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and letters and figures marked thereon, in which the figure shown is a side view and partial section of my invention.
My invention has for its object to provide means for the speedy removal of snow and ice from the streets of cities; and it consists of a machine adapted to discharge heated air with steam, natural or superheated, upon the snow or ice, melting the same and causing it to flow off in the form of Water.
Referring to the accompanyingdrawin g, A shows a frame mounted on wheels B B, which may be flanged, if desired, to adapt them to railroad tracks, or runners may at times be conveniently substituted for wheels. 0 is a furnace mounted on the frame A, surmounted bythe steam-boiler D and hot-air chamber D.
Beneath the frame is a tank, E, communicac ing with the boiler D by pipes d, and with the hot-air chamber D by pipes d (1 represents expanded portions or fan-boxes on the pipes d, within which are fans 6 mounted on the shaft 6, to which motion is communicated by a gear, or similar connection, from the driving-wheels B. The pipes 61, instead of running directly, as shown, from the boiler to the tank, may pass through the furnace, whereby the steam may be superheated.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- Ihe combination, with a portable furnace, steam-generator, and hot-air chamber, of the perforated distributing tank or chest E, 10-,
