To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJOMAN HENRY WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stamford, in the county of Jones and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Pickers Sacks, of which the following is a specifi cation.

This invention has for its object to provide a sack or receptacle especially designed for use of cotton pickers and which embodies such novel features of construction as to permit the bag or sack to be opened longitudinally to permit quick and convenient emptying of the contents thereof.

Another object is the provision of a cotton pickers sack in which the lower terminal thereof is normally closed by detachable fasteners which, when released, and subsequent to the detachment of the overlapped side edges, permits the entire sack to be spread out in the form of a sheet permitting its convenient withdrawal from beneath its contents.

lVith these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described in the following specification and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the improved cotton pickers sack.

Fig. 2 represents a fragmentary sectional view therethrough in the plane of one of the fasteners for the overlapping portions of the front wall.

Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several .views, the numeral 5-indicates the rear wall of the improved sack, the latter being preferably formed as an entirety of canvas or other textile. material having a requisite degree of strength. The main portion of the front wall is designated by the numeral 6 and is permanently secured along one longitudinal edge of the adjacent: edge of the back or rear wall 5 by stitching or equivalent means 7.' A shoulder strap 8 is adequately secured. to the back or rear wall 5 and is of such form as to be conveniently supported upon the shoulder of the operator.

Fastener carrying strips 9, 10, stitched or otherwise fastened to the longitudinal edges turned thereby preventing 9, 10 of the front and back constitute the closing means for the side of the bag and read ly permit the bag to be opened throughout 1ts entire length.

The outer seam of the overlapped strips 9 is provided with a plurality of uniformly spaced metallic eyelets 11 which receive the rotatable shanks 12 carried by the inner strip 10 as indicated at 14. The terminals of the shanks 12 are provided with rotatable buttons 13 which are fiat and elongated and adapted for insertion, when properly adjusted, through the elongated openings in the eyelets 11. Subsequent tothe insertion of the buttons in the eyelets the buttons are Withdrawal thereof.

The lower edges of the front and rear portions of the sack are removably connected by separable fasteners 15 preferably of the same type used to connect the strips 9 and 10 whereby the lower end of the sack is maintained in closed position. The lower extremity of the inner strip 10 is also provided with the eyelet of a separable fastener the male element of which is connected with the rear wall 5 whereby the lower extremity of the strip 10 may be detachably connected with the lower wall to connect these portions of the sack and prevent loss of the contents thereof.

In use, the sack is suspended from the shoulder of the operator by the strap 8, in

the usual manner, and the cotton is picked and deposited in the upper open end of the sack. When the sack has been filled with cotton or other material, the several buttons of the separable fasteners, 12, 15 and 16 are adjusted so as to aline with the elongated openings in the eyelets and by withdrawing the buttons through the eyelets the entire sack may be extended into sheet or fiat form permitting its convenient withdrawal from beneath the pile of material which was formerly the contents of the sack. Due to the manner in which sacks of this character are used, it is desirable to employ a sack of considerable length, ordinarily more than the height of the user in order that a large quantity of cotton may be picked and deposited in the sack. Due to the length of the sack, it is frequently dragged over the ground and the portions of the sack which are thus subjected to wear are Worn out long before the remaining portions of the sack show appreciable signs of wear. For this Ill) reason, I form the strips 9 and 10 separately from the front and back of the sack and thus when the lower portion of the latter is worn out the strips 5) and 10 carrying the separable fasteners may be removed from the worn sack and applied to a new one. In this manner, the strips or flaps and the fasteners carried thereby may be re peatedly used byapplication to a number of sack bodies until the strips or fasteners are worn to such extent as to be rendered useless. However, as the strips and fasteners will ordinarily outlast the material of several sacks, it is evident that the owner is saved the expense of purchasing new fastoners each time the material of the body of the sack is replaced.

\Vhat I claim is:

1. A sack including a back portion, a front portion of less width than and connected along one edge with the back portion and foldable thereover along one side of the sack, a removable flap carried by and foldable upon the free edge of the back portion, an overlapping flap carried by the front portion, said overlapping flaps being located at the extreme side of the sack for convenience in emptying the contents of the latter, separable fasteners carried b the flaps and detachably connecting the atter, :v-

front portion of less width than and connectcd along one side edge with a back portion, a removable flap carried by and foldable upon the free edge of the back portion, an overlapping flap carried by the free edge of the front portion, said overlapping fia )S being located at the extreme side ofthe sac separable fasteners connecting the flaps, means to detachably connect the lower portions of the front and back sack portions to close the lower terminal of the sack, and means detachably connecting the lower portion of the back with the lower terminal of the first mentioned flap.
