Description

B. FORD.
STORAGE BATTERY.
APPUCATION FILED AUG.23. 1919.
Patented Mar. 1, 1921.
- .Bruce 'OrOZ ;BRUCE FORD, OF PEILADELPEA, PENNSYLVANIA.
. STORAGE BATTERY.
To allwhomtmay camera: Be it known that I, BRUcE FoRD, actzen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the County of Philadelphia and .State of Pennsylvana, have nvented certain new and useful Improvements in' Storage Batteries, of which the following is a specification.
v The principal objects of the present 1nvention are, first, to improve the Construction and operation of the means which'support the groups of 'positive and negatve plates and their spacers or separators n properly insulated relation; second, to cushion the plates and parts against shocls n cident to transportation thi-rd, to faclitate the use of glass jars in connection .with the separate supporting of positive and negative groups of plates and their separators or spacers, and fourth, to enable the plate structure or assemblage and the supporting pedestal therefor to be handled and inserted in and removed from the jar as a unitary structure. v
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description which will be given in connection with theaccompanying drawings forming part hereof and in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of a plate I structure including the separators, and
'showing at the left a pedestal strip in its normal connected position and .at the right a pedestal strip detached. e
Fig. 2,` is a longitudi'nal section of the lower part of a cell.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same, and
Fi 4, is a transverse sectional view showing portions of a pedestal strip, a plate, and an insulator or spacer, and illustratin a modification of the invention.
n the'drawings, Figs. 1, 2 and 3,' 1 is a terials The strip 1, is adherent to the feet.
2, so that the plate structure or as'semblage can be ha dled' and` inserted into and removed from the jar 3, as a .unit. The ends of the pedestal strip may abut upon the sides of the jar .while the strip rests upon the bottom of the jar and for these reasons the pedestal strip is well adapted for use in Specification of Letters atent.

connection with glass jars. The strips 1, are provided with sockets 4, for the reception of the plate feet or pins 2, and these sockets may be individual, as shown, or continuous, like a trough as will' be readily understood without further illustration. The strips are, or may be cored as indicated at 5, in order to lighten them and 'save material, while at the same time increa'sing their elasticty. If of soft rubber the sockets and feet may be so proportioned as to cling to each other, otherwise they may be made adherent by the use of pitch orthe like. 6 are separators or spacers arranged between the plates 7, and they are shown larger than the plates inorder to extend beyond the edges of the plates. Only the toes of the plate-feet or pns 2, may penetrate into the body of the pedestal stri s, and in that case the portion of 'the plate-feet or pins above the strips serves to hold the bottom edges of the plates above the strips while the separators or spacers rest on top of the strips and extend below the edges of the plates. -By` this ar- .plates and parts' against shocks such as.
occur in handling andtransportation. Each group of plates is connected by a bus-bar 8, having a termi'nal9, and all the plates of a group can be supported at one side by a pedestal strp, and at the other' side by a 'terminal 9, sutably connected for that purpose with the cover of the jar.
The Construction and mode of'operation of the structure illustrated in Fig. 4, are
the same as above described except that the socket or groove element P, is transferred from the pedestal strip to the foot or pin element Q and the projecting element which coperates 'with the socket or groove element i 2 is formed on the pedestal strip.
. I claim:
1. In a storage battery' the .combination of a grou of' plates of like polarity each havmg a oot, and a pedestal strip extending from plate to plate provided with a i i socket adherent to the 'feet of the plates,
whereby the group of plates` and the strip can be handled' as a ;untarfy structure.
2. In a 'storage battery the .combination of a group of plates 'of like polarity each having a foot, and a pedestal strip provided with individual sockets adherent to the feet,
whereby the plates and strip can be handled as a unitary` structure.
3. In a storage battery the combination of a jar, plates having feet and arranged in groups o like polarity, and pedestal strips extending across the plates arranged on the bottom of the jar and each provided on its top with a socket into which the feet 'of the plates of one group project. 4. In a storage battery the combination of a jar, plates having feet and 'arranged in groups of like polarity, and pedestal strips abutting on the side walls of the jar and each provided on its top with a socket into which the feet of the platesof one group project.
5. In a storage battery the combination of a jar, plates having feet arranged in groups of like polarity, pedestal strips each provided on its top with a socket into which the toes of the feet of one group of plates extend leaving the rest of the feet projecting abovethe top of the strips and spacing the bottom edges of the plates above the same, and Separator-s resting on the strips and extending below the bottom edges of the plates. 9*
6. In a storage battery the combination of a jar, strips resting on the bottom and side walls of the jar, positive plates having feet the ends of which penetrate certain of said strips, negative plates having feet the ends of which penetrate the remaining strip, the portions of said feet above the strips holding the lower edges of the plates above the strps. v
7. I n a storage battery the combination of an elastic pedestal strip, and a group of plates of like polarity having feet penetrating the body of the strip which. is adherent to the feet.
8. In a storage battery the combination of a soft rubber pedestal strip, and a group of plates of like polarity having feet pena trating the body of the strip which 's adherent to the feet. 9. In a storage battery the combination of .soft rubber pedestal strips, a group of plates having feet penetrating the body of the strips and connected with it, bus-bars connecting the plates, and separators between the plates and the strips and the busbars, Whereby the parts constitute a u'nitary plate structure, substantially as described.
10. In a storage battery the combination of elastic pedestal strips, a group of plates having feet penetrating the body of the strips and connected with it, bus-bars connecting the plates, and separators between the plates and the strips and bus-bars, Whereby the parts constitute a unitary plate structure, substantially as described.
