Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 indicates the chamber or receptacle wherein the pumping devices are disposed,
.and 2 a cylindrical chamber or receptacle into which the liquid fuel is discharged from the pump receptacle and in which it collects. The receptacle 1 is fitted partly into the receptacle 2 and has its maj or axis disposed vertically, and the receptacle 2 has its major axis disposed horizontally; the
two receptacles being in valveecontrolled communication, as hereinafter explained.
The upper portion of the receptacle or chamber 1 has attached to it a tube or nipple l adapted to be connected by a fuel supply pipe (not shown) to the fuel tank and provided with a cavity to contain a normally-closed valve, said cavity having a suitable wire or wires to limit the upward or opening movement of the valve. The top wall of said receptacle has mounted on it a second nipple 5 adapted to be connected by another pipe (likewise not shown) to the inlet or suction pipe of the engine at a point above the carbureter. r1`he receptacle 2 is provided with a discharge tube or nipple 3 which is adapted to be connected by a pipe (not shown) to the carbureter, the upper portion of this nipple extending into said cylinder where it is equipped with a filter 17. n
Communication between the suction nipple 5 and the interior of the pump chamber or receptacle 1 is effected by means of a sleeve or neck 7 which is adapted to be closed by a valve 8. This valve 8 takes the form of a cone having upper and lower stem portions which are headed at their free ends; said valve being designed to fit in a conicalseat at the lower end of the axial bore of the abovamentioned neck 7 The Specification of Letters Patent.

long upper stem portion of the valve V8 ex sage; while the relatively short lower stem portion extends loosely through the neck of a stirrup 25 mounted on the top of the float, the terminal head of the said lower stem being adapted to strike against the under side of said neck.
The lower portion of the pump chamber 1 carries the automatic valve device for controlling communication between said cham ber or receptacle and the collecting chamber 2: the casing 12 of said device having its lower edge 13 directly engageable by the valve proper 15 which is of mushroom shape. The receptacle 1 is put in communication with the atmosphere by means of a port 6 formed in its side wall, and the receptacle or chamber 2 is connected with the atmosphere by a pipe 26, the latter receptacle having two small pipe fittings 28 for enabling its attachment tol the engine.
The operation is substantially as follows z-Assuming that the pump receptacle 1 is empty and that the float 23, in consequence, is at the bottom of said receptacle, a suction action will be created in the pump receptacle as soon as the engine commences to run` This will serve to close valve 15 and, at the same time, open the fuel valve in nipple et, with the result that fuel is drawn into and through nipple 4 and thence into receptacle 1. The fuel gradually fills said receptacle 1 and, as its level rises therein, raises the float 23, the valve 8 associated with the float ultimately closing the passage through the neck 7. rllhis shuts ofi' the suction and equilibrium with the outside air is rapidly restablished through the port 6 and pipe 17 which have continued to admit a certain amount of air through them into receptacle 1 during the entire time that the Vacuum delivery is taking place, but not enough to sensibly impair the inside vacuum. As the balancing of the outside and inside pressures continues, the level of the fuel in the receptacle 1 sinks, the float 23 descends and the valve 15 opens, whereupon the fuel flows into the collecting receptacle 2, which it ultimately fills to the same level as the inside receptacle 1, such level being high enough to keep the float constantly raised. Hence as soon as this level drops, the float sinks and uncovers the suction passage 7, whereupon more fuel is drawn into receptacle l through the suction nipple 4, and in this way the discharge of fuel through nipple 3 may be kept constant.
I claim as my invention In a pumping system, the combination of a pump chamber; a cylindrical collecting chamber wherein the lower portion of the pump chamber fits, said chambers having means for placing them under atmospheric pressure; a float in the pump chamber having a stirrup mounted on its upper end; a suction source mounted on the top of the pump chamber and comprising an elongated passage terminating at its lower end in a valve seat; a valve movable into und out .of said seat to control the suction, said valve having upper and lower stem portions, the upper stem extending freely through said passage and having a stop at its upper end for engagement with the end of said passage so as to suspend the float in lowered position, and the lower stem extending loosely through said stirrup and having a stop :xt its lower end for engagement with Said stiriup; means for supplying fuel to the pump chamber; and means controllingcommunication between the two chambers.
