WWW; f ZZZZ /Q/"QZ nnrrsn sears-arr EDWARD rossoiv, or cn rcaeo, ILLINOIS COLUMN-CASTING roit RAILWAY-cans} T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E WARD POSSON, citizen of the United States, residing at Chi- 1 taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1;
r 1g. 5 shows a perspective view of one of I F 1g. 6 shows a perspective viewof one of cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Column-Castings for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specification. A V g This invention relates to improvementsin car trucks, and particularly in the column castings embodied in the side frames of car trucks.
In railway car trucks as usually constructed particularly in the trucks of freight cars, the side frames'consist of upper and lower arch bars having vertical column'cas'tings extending between them. The truck bolster and associated mechanisms enter the space'between the column castings of each side frame, and when the springs of the truck are compressed thereis considerable vertical movement of the ends of the bolster and the spring caps with respect to the column castings. This movement causes relatively rapid wear of the inner faces of the column castings, and makes it necessary to replace the entire castings after they have become worn.
The principal object of thepresent invention is to provide a column casting having a removable wearing portion adapted to coact with the truck bolster, or otherv movable parts of the structure adjacent thereto. A further object of the invention is to provide a column castinghaving a removable .wear ng portion which is heldin position by the bolts which secure the column castings to the arch bars. Still another object is to provide a wear plate which maybe readily replaced when worn, without'the necessity-of replacing theentire column cast ing. Other obgectsrelate tovar ous features of construction and arrangement which will be pointed out more clearly hereinafter.
The nature ofthe inventlon Wlll be under- 7 stood from the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which one embodiment is illustrated.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a car truck embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 shows a top plan view of one side of the car truck;
Fig. 3 shows an enlarged, vertical section Specification of Letters Patent.

the column'castings', looking toward the inner side thereof, whichreceives the removable plate; and l I F 1g. 7 shows a perspective view of the rear or outer side of the column casting.
The invention is v shown asapplied to a car truck comprising the usual flanged wheels 10 nounted onthe axles 11, upon WlllChtllflJOllI'Ilitl boxes 12 aresupported.-

The central spaced apart portions of the receive between them, the vertically extending column castings 20 which are of the form illustrated particularly in Figsfi and 7. v Each column casting 20 comprises an upper wall or plate 21-, a lower wall or plate 22, integral side, walls 23 and an integral forward wall or inner face 24, Integral flanges 25 extending downwardly from the lower wall .22 areadapted to pass on opposite sides of thelow'er arch'bar 15. and auxili'ary arch bar'l6. Latera lly extending ears or brackets 26- are' .Lformed on opposite sides ofthe side columns and on the outer sides of the flanges 25, these brackets .being united to the lower ends of thesidewalls 23 by means of horizontal webs 27. "oasis-s.
. v V Patented Mar.1,1921 Application filed December 22,1919. Serial No. 346,650 1 1 are adapted to lower spring seats or supports 30 are carried.
On the inner side of each column casting, there is formed a brake hanger bracket 33. This bracket comprises two hub portions 33 which are apertured to receive the hanger pins 34 from which the brake hangers 35 are suspended. The brake shoes 36 are carried by the hangers 35. Each hanger bracket 33 is reinforced between the hub portions 33 and 33h and the hanger brackets are further reinforced by ribs 37 and 38 which unite them to the inner side walls 23 of the column castings. The side walls 23 of the brackets extend upwardly beyond the upper walls 21, forming flanges or lips 29 which are adapted to extend upwardly on opposite sides of the upper arch bar 14.
Each column casting 20 also comprises a vertically extending post or body portion 40 which is formed integrally with the upper and lower walls 21 and 22, respectively, and.
with the forward wall 24. Each post is provided with vertical apertures 41 adapted to be engaged by the bolts 4l2 which extend through the arch bars and through the column castings, being engaged at their lower ends by the nuts a3, whereby the central parts of the side frame are secured in assembled relation. V i
The forward face 24; of each column casting is offset inwardly or cut away to form a recess 44 and the central part of the cutaway portion is provided with a pocket 45' which is formed in the central enlarged portion 40' of the post 40. The apertures ll communicate with this pocket and the portion of the bolt 4-2 passing through the pocket is adapted to engage an apertured lug or boss 46 formed on the inner side of a removable wear plate Q7. The wear plate is adapted to enter thevcut away portion 4A of the column casting between the upper and lower shoulders 48 and a9, respectively, and the engagement of the bolt i2 with the lug 46 serves to secure thewear plate in position. The spring seat 30 supports the usual coil springs 50 which are en aged at their upperends by the spring cap 01 having ears 51 adapted to pass on opposite sides of the side columns 2 O.j The upper spring seat 51 I supports one end of the body bolster 53,
which bolster is provided at its end with cars 54 adapted toextend beyond the inner faces of the column castings;
"During the operation of the car, the
s'rin 's 50 are compressed and ex anded' frequently, causing a corresponding vertical movement of the bolster 53 and spring cap with respect to the column castings 20. The wear occasioned by this movement is received by the removable wear plates 47 so that aftercontinued use ofthe car, the
, wear plates 47 may be replaced by new ones wearing plate in position.
form of the invention for purposes of illustration, it will be understood that it may be constructed in various other forms without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
I claim: 7
l. The combination in the side frame of a railway truck of upper and lower arch bars, column castings spaced apart and extending between said arch bars, removable wearing lates en a 'in said column castin s and a a o i a a single means for securing sa d wearing plates and said upper and lower arch barsto said column castlngs.
2. The combination. in the side frame of a railway truck of upper and lower arch bars, column castings spaced apart and extending bteween said arch bars, removable wearing plates engaging said column castings, and. bolts extending downwardly through both of said arch bars and said column castings and extending through parts of said wearing plates.
3. The combination in the side frame of a railway truck of upper and lower arch bars, column castings extending between said arch bars, a bolster projecting between said column castings, wearing plates mounted on the opposite faces of said column castings to coact with said bolster, said column castings being provided with recesses, said wearing lates havin arts en a in said recesses.
