snor: a FOUNDBY COMPANY, or WILMNGTOMQELAWABE, AcoRPonArIoNoF DELAWARE. e
To all whom t may concern I Be it known that I, JAMES S. TrroiursoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pelham, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Brake- Shoes, of which the following isa specifi? cation.
This invention relates generallyl to brake shoes of that type which are provlded'with a reinforcing back and rein orcing strips of'reticulated metal embedded in the body of the shoe on the edge to the wearing faceV thereof. h
The object of the invention is to provide for anchoring'the reinforcing strips to the reinforcing back in a novel and simple man-` ner which will facilitate the operation of casting the body on the back and strips, and which will provide astrong and substantial shoe. Y In the accompanying drawings I have selected la segmental shoe for illustrating Fig. 2 is a crossfsectional view on the line 2--2'of Fig. 1. Y
Fig'. 3 is a plan view of the reinforcing bac .y y Y j Y Fig. 4 is an edge of the back. Referring to the drawings, 5 is the bod of the shoe which is divided into a plurality of segments 6 by the transverse slots or grooves 7. This body is cast on the ,ductile metal back 8, and the reinforcing stripsy 9 of reticulated metal, such as expanded metal, are embedded in the body on edge to the wearing face of the shoe in an inclined position as shown in Fig. 2 or in a perp'en dicular position as may be preferred.
. The reinforcing backk 8 is provided with a plurality of transverse depressions 10 spaced apart at intervals between its ends.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1921.
Application led December 17, 1919. Serial No. 345.536.'`
In each of these depressions there is a plu- `V rality of slits 11 correspondin to the number of strips 9 and extending engthwise of the back. The strips are projected into these slits 11, and pins 12 are engaged with the strips and the back to anchor the strips to the back. The 'strips are thus assembled and anchored to the back and then the bod metal is cast thereon. The body and baer are securely anchored together by theins.
12, and as allparts of the body Vare eld' together bythe strips, there will be no possibility of any parts of the shoe becoming detached in :event the shoe is cracked or fractured. Thus my invention provides a very strong' and substantial shoe which will withstand the rough usage of handling'and the strains andblows incident to actual service.
From the foregoing description and the drawings,A it will be readily understood that the invention may be used in solid shoes as well as in segmental'shoes and -in different kinds of segmental and solid car and driver' shoes. And I' reserve the right to embody Athe yinvention in all kindsofv shoes and to make all changes -in the form, proportion and'varrangement of parts within the of the following claims.
I claim: l
1. A brake shoe com vrisin a reinforcing back, a lurality o rein orcing stri s of reticulate metal arranged on edge to t e wearing face of the shoe, means interlock# kingly engaging the back and strips, and a body cast on the back and strips.
2. A brake shoe comprising a reinforcing 'back having a plurality of slits therein', a
plurality of reinforcing strips of reticulated metal engaged in said slits, means for securing thefstrins to the back, and a body cast on the back and strips.
3. A brake shoe having a reinforcingback with slitted depressionstherein, a plurality of reinforcing strips of reticulated metal engaged in said slits, means for securing the strips to the back, and a-body cast on the backand strips.- 'y
45. A brake shoe comprising a reinforcing` back having transverse depressions therein and slits in said depressions extending longitudinally of the back, a pluralit of reinforcing strips of reticulated meta engaged scope f in said slits, vmeans for anchoring the strips to the back, and a body cast on said back and strips. A
5. A rbrake shoe comrisn'g a. ductile 'metal reinforcing barokl aving transverse depressions thereln and slits in said depressions extending lon itudinally of the back,
a plurality of rein orcing strips of reticulated metal arranged in an inclined osi/cion*` on edge Vto the wearing face of the sllioe and 10 engaged in said slits, pins vanchoring the strips to the back, and a body cast on said back VandY strips; 'f Y JAMES S. THOMPSON. .Witness Y 1P M.V A. Kmnm.
