UNITED STATES PATENT FFlCE.
MISSGHRL i]U1BIRIQBUIUIN'GHQLLAILM FOR EN'GIZEFES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Petenterl "Feb. 2.2, 1.921.
Application filed April 16, 1920. Serial. No. 374,-fi38.
To all w [1.0m it may concern v Be it known that We, ALBERT E. BUREN and MnLviLLn T. HENDERSON, citizens of the United States residing at Sedalia, in, the county of Pettis and State of Mi.ssouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lulniceting-Alarms for Engines, of which the following is e specification, "reference being had therein to the eccon1penying drawing.
.he present invention relates to s device designed for use in the crank case or oil pen oi an internal. combustion engine for the purpose of controlling an electrical cirsuit, in order to stop the engine or give an .alerm signal when the lubricating oil has been exhausted in the troughs or depressions from which the oil is splashed, thereby Warning the operator that the lubricating system is out of order so that same can be remedied before the bearings, cylinder wells and other parts become dry and damaged due to friction and heating.
The object of the invention is the provision of a. novel and improved, yet simple and inexpensive device adapted to be installed in the crank case or oil pan for controlling an eiectrical circuit when theoil level in the corresponding oil trough or clepression lowers to a. dangerous amount, such as by the stoppage oi the conduit or tube which supplies the oil. or the like, and either stopping the engine or giving an alarm signal, to call attention to the defect before the engine becomes overheated or damaged.
A further object is the provision of such av device including a. float chamber adjacent to the oil trough or depression in communication therewith, and containing e circuit-closing or controlling float, and e terminal of on electrical circuit exteluling with in said chamber for the eugagen'iont of the float to close an electrical circuit.
1th the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described. and, claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing flow the spirit of the invention.
flhe invention is illustrated in the sccon'lpsnying"drawing, wherein the figure is a. longitudinal section of the oil, pan of the crank case showing the present device embodied thereirn portions being shown in ele vetlon end a fragmentary portion of the engine crenl: shaft and connecting rods helng shown.
The present invention is designed. pectic uleriy' for engines using the splash svstein of lubricetioin snai in the .constraiction shown, the crank case or oil pen 1 has the bottom cover piste 2 detachable secured thereto, and provided with the ti'cnghsor depressions 3 for holding oil therein into which the connecting rod bearings, +2 dip during; the rotation of the crank shaft 5, for splashing the oil to the bearings and up- Werclly into the engine cylinclei's. The fore going structure the splash system, and should the supplv of oil be stopped, such as by the exh eus tion of oil or the stoppage of the supniv conduit, the oil. in the depressions 3 'Wiil bbCOmS exheusted, resulting; in the heating; of the be ings, cylinder Wells, pistons and the like, with possible burning; out of the bearings, scoring of the cylinders and pistons, anti other in ceiri'ying out 2 of the oil pan cnl chamber 6,
the invention, piste provided with s. vertienci shown. this chamber integral with the plate 2, although can be a separate pert essenloictl in any suit- This oheinb the in order that "tee oil ilvel in the trough libel, es ieciellyywhen the oil is practiceli exhausted from the trough.
The chemberlfl has its lower end open and provicletl with en onttur'neo 8 to which e cover piste or can 5 is secured by means ofbelts in or the like ancl e. bush 'ing ll. of insnlsting material is fitted clown wa'iclly within it central holein the cop i and is seated on seici vcan Within the it my end ofthc chember 6. A. binding is typical of engines using able manner: with such as by Weld in lowering of 'thecil.
